Notes: Collaboration with Fonta Flora Brewery

Morganton in Western North Carolina, today home of the Fonta Flora Brewery led by its creative mastermind Todd Boera, who gives emphasis to using local Appalachian ingredients in his beers whenever possible. Todd’s vision that ”fermentation is yet another medium for creating art” is much more than just a phrase, it’s the actual ideology behind the brewery. However, what few people outside the US know, is that this area plays an important role in American history. 500 years ago it was a proud mainstay of several native American chiefdoms. Joara being one of them, neigbouring Cofitachequi being another. This beer is named after the mythical chieftainness “The Lady of Cofitachequi” who is believed to be one of few – if not the only – female native American rulers. Taken prisoner by invading Spanish conquistadores, on an insatiable hunt for gold, this proud lady managed to escape and rejoin with her people. The invaders built several forts in an attempt to control the area, only to see them all destroyed and burned down by local warriors months later. Only one out of 120 Spaniards is said to have survived. The defeat effectively ended all Spanish attempts to colonize the area. The Lady and her fellow chieftains were again rulers of their own land.

Pours into an imperial nonic a hazed light to medium golden with a half finger white head atop that left a few broken chunks behind as it settled.Sharp grapefruit and pine resin over top of sugary sweetness and a touch nutty maltiness.Grapefruit rind and light aspirin upfront on the palate followed by caramel and mild sweet alcohol, finishing with a earthy note.Pretty well rounded, not a new wave ipa here more of a bitter/sharper style.

A: Pours a relatively clear medium golden honey in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising slowly from the surface of the beer and a light amount of pale golden yellow colored highlights. The beer has a two finger tall dense sudsy foamy off-white head that slowly reduces to a medium sized patch of medium thick film surrounded by a large patch of very thin film covering the majority of the remainder of the surface of the beer (95+%) and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of pine/resin, floral, and citrus/grapefruit pith hops over the top of just shy of moderate aromas of bready + toasted + caramel malts.

T: Upfront there are moderate flavors of bready + toasted + caramel malts with light to moderate amounts of caramel sweetness. That is followed by moderate to strong flavors of pine/resin, floral, and citrus/grapefruit pith hops which impart a moderate amount of lingering bitterness.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Crisp with a hint of dryness in the finish.

O: Easy to drink with well hidden alcohol and a very pleasant combination of hop flavors + aromas. Enjoyable and I could easily have this one again (hopefully they bring the collaboration back again).

Look: It is golden with a bit of haze to it. It has good head retention with a white head.

Smell: The aromas are heavy in pine and floral hops. There is also a bit of resin in the nose.

Taste: It is loaded with floral flavors and some pine. There is also a moderate amount of caramel flavor in support. In addition there is a low bread element. As it warms up, fruit flavors begin to make their presence known.

Feel: It has a moderate body. It is highly bitter, but the malt does enough in the finish to balance it out.

Overall, this is an excellent combination of floral and piney flavors with a great balance in the background with the caramela and bread.

L: Had this beer on-tap at Brewmasters, poured into a snifter glass. had a bright, golden yellow color and a cloudy consistency. There was a big, foamy, fairly long-lasting head. Very good lacing.

S: A solid aroma of hops, citrus, tropical fruit, and some malt.

T: Tasted of a lot of citrus fruit (lemon, orange), a good shot of hops, light malt, some tropical fruit notes (papaya, mango), and a floral quality. This is the type of flavor that gets better as it goes along. It's sweet and fruity, with a good balance of hops. Quite well done and focused.

F: A well-carbonated beer with a vibrant finish. Light-bodied.

O: While this beer won't necessarily separate itself from the galaxy of IPAs out there, it is solidly made and tasty. Worth a look.

200 ml draft in a small tulip glass. This IPA pours a hazy golden colour with a white dollop of froth, which leaves intricate lacing as it recedes. The aroma is perfumed with hoppy notes, grapefruit especially, but also other citrus fruits and florals. The taste is sweet and fruity, again with dominant grapefruit, slowly fading into a bitter finish. Carbonation is mild, with a nice bite to the mouthfeel and the medium body.

From TercerTiempoCervezas. In Teku glass. Reading JHTP11 Ch24. Very citrusy and bitter.A good IPA but I miss more tropical fruits and more resin. Amager has better IPAs

Collab w/ Fonta Flora.

L: Gold/amber with a very slight haze to it. Puffy white head that leaves lacing all around the edges. S: Really juicy aromas of apricot and tropical fruits such as papaya, pineapple, kiwi; even some faint watermelon in there. It could just be the knowledge of the fact that it is a collab with Fonta Flora, but it does seem to have a nice earthiness to it as it warms. T: Kind of sharp upfront, but then leading to tropical and peach notes with a perfectly bitter finish. F: Medium-light body with medium carbonation.
Overall: A great IPA. Maybe the only knock is some slight astringency, but still really nice.
