Notes: Oaked Imperial Red IPA

It is often said that behind every good man stands a strong woman. Well, in the case of Todd & Linda Haug of Minneapolis brewing fame, this is not quite accurate. Because Linda Haug was never placed behind her husband, rather she’s up there right next to him - and always has been. Two years ago we brewed "Todd - The Axe Man" (a beer title we had to come up with, Todd is way too humble to even suggest anything like that) which has been hugely successful, both in its Danish and its American incarnation. So we found it only fitting to brew a beer for Linda, Todd’s partner in crime in every aspect of life, since this couple has become very good friends of Amager. Linda is not only cool and badass, she also has the biggest heart you can imagine. And for the brew day she came here and worked her butt off to brew the beer we created as a collaboration. Here’s to you Linda - because next to every axe man, there’s an axe grinding wife….

From Cervezalandia. In Teku glass. Playing Blackwell Epiphany. Very smooth on the palate. Oak touch very soft. Very fruity, with lots of grapefruit. Oily. Delicious

500ml bottle - an ode to a member of what I presume to be part of a Minnesota-based music group? As for the beer, it's an 'oaked Imperial red IPA'.

This beer pours a dark, murky, orange-brick brown colour, with four fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly tan head, which leaves some decent spectral and wisping cloudy lace around the glass as it slowly sinks away.

It smells of rather resinous green hops (pine, spruce, and hemp), dense caramel/toffee malt, sort of muted vanillan woody notes, demarara sugar syrup, stewed orange and red Texas grapefruit flesh, and a sense of hovering estery alcohol. The taste is bready and pastry-forward caramel malt, biscuity toffee squares, more vanilla-heavy barrel woodiness, citrus vodka, reduced brown sugar, and a somewhat testy earthy, leafy, and piney verdant hoppiness.

The carbonation is quite understated in its bored-seeming frothiness, the body a solid medium weight, and mostly smooth, as that boozy quotient kind of has trouble keeping its hands inside the windows at all times. It finishes well off-dry, the mixed sweetness contending with some heady lingering hops.

Overall - I am glad that the 'oak' part of this offering is duly restrained, as doing that sort of thing to a perfectly good DIPA is typically anathema in my book. Anyways, a veritable big-boy (or girl, I suppose) beer, with the 18-proof wowee sauce barely concealed.
