500ML bottle lifted off of a clearance rack; expectations are tempered. Was this really only brewed once in 2007?

The pour is sheer clay; I think I saw this beer starring in a scene from “Ghost”. Nose brings an herbal tint, oranges, light sweetness, an earthiness bespeaken of hops past their due date. Very odd.

Batch One is great if it’s a nine-yaer old barleywine; if not, not so much. The hops greet my palate with a shaken tree worth of old hops leaves, & leave a faintly metallic aftertaste…which isn’t as bad as it should be. Spritz of alcohol, latent sweetness, green apple, grapefruit. Caramel? Thick, coating. Half of this midget bottle will be enough, thanks.

Interesting take on the style; if it weren’t for that persistent metallic sliver in the back of my throat, this would be a winner. As is, pretty good.

Pretty color in a style not known for its looks. Nice interplay between the hops and the malt. But in my final analysis, the hops are too strong.

This beer pours a slightly hazy ruddy copper with a decent head. The aroma offers up apricots, pears, nutmeg, cinnamon, bright red apple, date, fig, plum, blackberry, and marmalade. This complex depth continues in the taste, with toffee, fig, dry caramel, plum, graham cracker, and orange peel present. There is a solid level of bitterness, and a finish of burnt pecans and nutmeg. The mouthfeel is surprisingly light given the flavors, medium bodied with a solid amount of fizz. Overall this is an utterly delicious beer full of dark, dried fruit, spice, and nut flavors, with an overlay of citrusy American hops. Completely worth a re-buy.

22 oz bottle poured into can glass

A: almost no head with a fairly stiff pour. Super brackish hazy amber color very murky and can not see through it. Looks like low carbonation.

S: very hoppy with almost a sour raisin smell very malty jells like burnt sugars

T: starts out with plums morphs into resin and when you swallow a rush of sweet and malty with that burnt sugary taste with a nice layering effect of bitterness

M: Very heavy on the tongue syrupy very soft mouthfeel little to know carbonation

O: This is a pretty big Barleywine it tastes bigger than it is which is odd but it's got such a nice layered flavor I like it. Thus is recommended

It was a while back when I tried this beer and made basic notes on my phone. I remember it being pretty good but over hopped. Bitter earth, higher alcohol burn than I'd have liked.

A - Must have been from 2010 or 2011 so at least a year old. For that though it is well carbonated bubbles traveling from the base to the head making a 1/4 inch opaque colored ring that sticks around for quite a bit.

S - First thing I could smell from the bottle neck was sherry and toffee. In the glass I get more sherry, citrus hops, and more sweet malts.

T - Still quite boozy but light in the flavor. Mild toffee mixes with a faded citrus hop blend. The actual sherry I smelled seems to just came and went so with age it just blended I guess.

M - Very drinkable but still sip worthy. Age seem to make it a tad watery.

Overall I never had a barleywine from Denmark so it was worth the 5 dollar pass. I will stick to my Monster Barleywine (or since it's been retired Avery's Hog Heaven) if I need a more vivid hoppy barleywine. Would love to try this fresh if brewed again.

The same devilish twist that the American brewing culture did to the English barleywine recipe, the Danes are bringing back to the Scandinavian regions of Europe. Where one suggest influence, another may suggest envy.

Batch One pours like the prototypical American strong ale: A deep amber hue saturates the glass with ruby, maroon, and garnet colors that illuminate through a heavy yeast and hop haze. Medium-weight foam tops the beer with a frothy, creamy whipped appearance. The glass becomes adorned with leopard prints of lace that's evenly dispersed about the glass.

The dialogue of malt and hops start their stalemate when the gravity of malt aromas clash with that of citrus pith and piney scent. Both rise to the ultimate limits of their entitlement to beer but without wavering to the other.

As this clash of sweet and bitter interplay continues in taste, the upheaval of fruit esters take the form of oranges, cherries, and figs. As esters inform the sweet starchy taste of barley malt, the spiciness of alcohol rises to side with the citrusy hop bitterness that excel in aftertaste.

The bready textures become the battlefield on which the war between the hops and malt play out. As the creaminess subsides, the malts turn from caramel sweet to malty-dry. Hops turn from citrus flavor to pithy and resinous bitterness to finish. But the reluctance to fade from either the malt nor hops actually benefit the drinker in allowing for an indefinate linger of both malt and hops to extend well into the next sip.

This is the story of American barleywine, and one in which Amager captures very, very well. If conflict equals balance, then those complexities are delivered in full force to even the most expectant palates. Batch One is a complex beer that's not for the faint of heart.
