Gold in color with a a very clear complexion. There’s a quarter inch of dishwater white on top. Heavy, soapy lacing is present. The aroma is of bitter citrus. I’m tasting bitter citrus and grapefruit. The mouth is dry and resinous.

Decent head production; poor retention.
Aroma is incredibly potent, peppery, and herbal. Up close, it doesn't lose any of that dank pungency, although it does add a bit of a tropical and citrus melange. Although intimidating at a distance, up close it's very pleasant, with notes of stone fruit, mango, and grapefruit, along with floral tones added to the pungent and peppery dankness.
On the palate, the big malt base finally comes to play. It's grainy and, if not quite sweet, doughy and malty up forward. The hops don't take a back seat for long, however, quickly building to a dank peak before mid-sip. Peppery middle; accents of citrus and tropical fruit; very resinous throughout the middle and back third.
Fairly lively for the ABV, bordering on, but not quite, syrupy.

Pours clear, gold in color with one quarter inch head. Taste is cantaloupe and grapefruit. Bitter, medium body, moderate carbonation. Wanted more. A kind of bitter mess.

On tap.
Maui ipas at the source are very well done. White head. Lots of lace. Clear golden color. Beautiful beer.
Such a great west coast forward ipa. Earthy, piney, dank. Weedy and resiny. A nice level of bitterness. The mosaic add a bit of fruit and citrus. Grapefruit and pineapple, but very subtle.
Great feel, very smooth, but bittering finish.
This and the big swell on tap really impressed me.

On tap at Quesadilla Gorilla
A: Pours slightly hazy golden yellow amber with a frothy off white head that settles to a firm layer and laces beautifully.
S: Big tropical fruit, zesty citrus, slightly resinous and grassy, biscuity malt, and caramel sweetness.
T: Zesty citrus, lemon grapefruit, and tangerine, tropical fruit, papaya, passion fruit, and mango, floral, a little grassy, a touch of earthy spice, biscuity malt, and a little caramel sweetness.
M: Medium body, moderate carbonation. Super drinkable.
O: Probably my favorite IPA I've had from Maui. Really nice.

Very surprisingly nice double IPA, smooth, juicy and higher ABV well-hidden. Slightly cloudy golden color with some fluffy white head and spotty lingering lacing. Smells great, nice citrus and floral hops. Tastes of loads of citrus zest - grapefruit, orange, lemon, passion fruit - as well as a little papaya, guava, pineapple, caramel, vanilla, bread and a great malt backbone. Perfect amount of bitterness in the aftertaste. Mild, soft, smooth mouthfeel and great carbonation. Can’t believe this is a double IPA!

12 ounce can into tulip glass, canned on 9/6/2017. Pours fairly hazy/cloudy medium golden yellow color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big tangerine, grapefruit, peach, pineapple, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, berry, citrus peel/zest, light pepper/pine, white bread dough, light honey, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/tropical hops and bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big tangerine, grapefruit, peach, pineapple, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, berry, citrus peel/zest, light pepper/pine, white bread dough, light honey, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, grassy, spicy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of tangerine, grapefruit, peach, pineapple, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, berry, citrus peel/rind, light pepper/pine, white bread dough, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical hops and bready malt flavors; with an awesome malt/bitterness balance, and zero lingering hop astringency after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering bitterness. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready/sticky, and lightly resinous/rindy balanced mouthfeel that is fantastic. Minimal warming alcohol for 8%. Overall this is an outstanding DIPA. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical hops and bready malt flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to drink for the ABV; with the mellowly bitter/drying finish, never aggressive. Awesome soft mouthfeel for a DIPA. Really awesome mosaic hop showcase as expected. Juicy and fairly dank hop complexity; nice bready malt backbone, with minimal residual sweetness. A highly enjoyable offering.

The smell is hoppy with a slight hint of citrus. The taste is somewhat lacking and left me wanting more flavor. The feel is frothy and sour. This beer seems to be using bitterness and a large amount of hops to compensate for a lack of taste. Overall I don’t reccomend it

My lady picked me up a can in Honolulu and flew this sucker back with her for 4,370 miles. Much thanks, she rocks.
A: yellow with an orange tint. Cloudy. Medium carbonation keeps going. Two finger head. Laces nicely.
S: Bam! goes the Mosaic hops! Mango, tropical, some berry, light pine, light rind, and a hint of biscuit.
T: There's blood orange, grapefruit, mango, passion fruit, herbal, dank, rinds, malt and biscuit, I sense a very tiny bit of spice. Bitter bite comes at the end, but I don't even think it would be off-putting to non-IPA fans, there is just a lot going on here besides the bitter hop bomb BS. This is a damn fine tasting DIPA. Wow.
F: Shines here. Not overly oily. Medium dry. A little creamy. Goes down soooo easy with the high ABV%, you can feel it but you don't even care, that might be a new standard for me.
O: This is an excellent DIPA. Excellent use of Mosaic hops. Refreshing yet potent. Highly recommended.

Hazy yellow mustard color with a tall 3 finger head of fluff.
Holy hop nose! Lots of fresh mosaic, with bright citrus notes, mango, slight passion fruit, slight mild cheddar, and a hint of cattiness. All characteristics of the mosaic hop.
Lots of dank citrus notes - and by that I mean they are bright but skunky at the same time. Like a dank cellar. With oranges. Hints of blood orange, papaya, tangerine, a strong herbal presence, and a smooth, easy bitterness. Whatever IBU's are there, you don't taste them.
Feel is resinous but not overly so - the carbonation takes care of that; and a nice smooth semi-dry profile that ends on slight hop oil and sawdust.
Overall, a pretty heavy hitter for Maui Brewing. They should discontinue Big Swell and make this their flagship IPA. Much, excuse me, "Mo" Better.

Definitely would consider myself to be a Maui fan at this point, so when I saw this Mosaic DIPA at a local store earlier today, I snatched it up. At about $11 a four pack of 12 oz cans, it's not the best deal in the world but it's also not overpriced. If only these were 16 oz cans at that price; imagine that! Probably should've checked the date on this pack, as it's a few months old, but luckily it's still holding up quite well as far as I can tell.
Pours mostly clear, bearing a vibrant orange hue and a huge, pillowy head of dense white foam. Lace is splotchy and semi-tiered as the head fades to a rocky two-fingers with solid legs. Mostly hazed-over surface and active carbonation firing off from the bottom very consistently. Pretty solid looker here.
Nose is heavy on the rindlike citrus, almost to the point of exclusivity at first. I get some elements that are mostly tangelo-like with candied orange and grapefruit itself in there, but there are definite resinous notes, dank and earthy/grassy, pine, and some light aspects of berry as can sometimes be eked out of Mosaic hops. A definitely get a bit of caramel malt here along with a light sniff of ethanol, but it's in no way overpowering. Overall, this smells like a pretty normal and effective Mosaic hopped DIPA. I'm interested.
On the tongue, this has strong candied citrus and caramel maltiness with some nutty, biscuity malt backbone as well. That's not to say this isn't hoppy, because it definitely has strong pine, earthy and grassy hop flavors with some light spice. Juicy passion fruit and tangerine take up the mid-palate and allow more pine to come forward towards the finish. This is probably a bit less "forward" about its hop character compared to how it drank very fresh, but it's still quite hoppy and satisfying.
Mouthfeel here is spectacular, and one of the best I've had in a bigger Mosaic DIPA recently. It's in no way sharp or overly bitter, with a slightly oily element upfront and a creamy, rather smooth finish. Slightly effervescent carbonation that seems at odds with the activity it's displaying in the body even as I'm currently sipping and almost done my glass. Doesn't feel like an 8% beer overall. Will gladly drink the others I bought and will try to find it fresher next time!
