355ml can poured into Sleeman glass.

Pours a clear, dark cola brown with two fat fingers of creamy tan head that leaves puffy clouds of lace as it recedes.

Smells of coffee milkshake, semi-sweet cocoa powder, dried vanilla pods, roasted coconut and mild bitter hops.

Tastes of chocolate covered coffee beans, melted brown sugar, roasted coconut and more plain leafy hops.

Feels light and mild. Medium bodied with carbonation that is a bit thin. Finishes dry.

Verdict: Recommended. Not a whole lot of coconut, but pretty good.

First Coconut Porter I've had. Impressed. A lot going on this can. Never had a Maui Brew before. Iconic and enticing me to try more from Maui. Purchased from Carmine Street in the West Village.

L-Dark brown with no real light passing through
S-Medium sweet porter scent
T-Dark brown sugars, burnt chocolate, iced espresso, coconut ending
F-Medium body, low carbonation with pleasant burnt notes
O-Suprized. Sits well and quite enjoyable

L - Pitch black in the glass with ruby red highlights. Two fingers of almond-colored head which stuck around forever.

S - Dark roast coffee with a touch of coconut. Hersehy syrup taste on the back end

T - Toasted coconut, iced coffee, bitter dark chocolate and coffee grounds on the finish

F - Still slightly thin even at 6%, but not watery. Calm feel and bitter coffee stick to everything

O - Coconut was lacking, but still there enough to be noticed. A thin mouthfeel, but this is still a solid coconut dessert beer.

12 ounce can poured into pint glass.

Color was a nice dark brown with a thick frothy head that dissipated pretty quickly. Smell mostly consisted of chocolate milk, coffee & caramel. Really didn't get too much in the way of coconut. Tasted like a good porter with lots of roasted malt, caramel, coffee and a slightly bitter aftertaste. Still no coconut in the flavor profile. Overall a nice brew, but the coconut was lost in the richness of the coffee and chocolate. Would be great on a hot day with a scoop of butternut pecan ice cream. BEER FLOATS!

Dark brown color with light brown head. Aroma is sweet and milky like a chocolate shake. Taste is really well balanced with a nice malt and chocolate sweetness up-front but gets slightly bitter on the finish with a bit of coffee roastiness and also hoppy notes. Body is rich and smooth with low carbonation making it really easy to drink. I don't really get intense coconut notes but overall it's a really tasty porter.

I had this brew while on vacation with my wonderful family in Hawaii. The beer is solidly black twitch a dark brown head. The aroma is solidly porter...roasted.malt an a hint of hops. The taste, though, is mpsweeter than expected. And I did could perceive some of the coconut that's in the BOM. Full in body and pleasant.

Poured from can into pint glass; dark mahogany color with nice carbonation and brown toffee head. Toasted malts, hint of coconut, coffee and chocolate to the nose. Medium body, easy on the palate. Coconut is subdued by coffee and chocolate but it's a decent brew! Certainly not a Funky Budda Last Snow but I'd have another.

355 ml can. Canned on 2015-06-19.

A: Opaque black. 1 finger high foam.
S: Celery (!!). Coconut. Roasted coffee.
T: Coconut milk. Cocoa. Hints of sourness. Medium low bitterness. Dry.
M: Full bodied. Creamy.
O: Overall quite nice. Although the initial celery like aroma is a sign of some faults.

I suppose this is another example of American ingenuity; putting local ingredients together and making it into a tasty brew despite not being able to imagine coconut being good in ale.
This porter was better as it warms, the coffee flavors came out more to balance the coconut.

On the "1001" list, arguably should not be on the list... although the coconut was an interesting stroke, just not good.

12 oz can poured into tulip. 9/22/15.

L. Mid ought back with an off white color head with nice retention.
S. Sweet dark malts on the nose. Nice toast, sweetness with a hint of caramel. Not getting that much coconut though.
T. Coconut shines through in the palate, but not over powering. Delicate and dry. Nice dry malt notes with light chocolate notes as well.
F. Lighter feel with light carbonation.

L : Poured into a Pint Defiance tulip. Body is a very dark brown, almost black. The two finger brown head receded quickly.

S: Dark and milk chocolate, toasted coconut, slight dark fruit and woodiness.

T: Dark roasted malt, dark chocolate, toasted coconut, very slight woody bitter aftertaste.

F: Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Soft and foamy, with a slight warmth.

Pours a deep brown with a one inch tan, creamy head and good lacing. Predominant smell is that of roasted coffee with no trace of coconut. Tastes of roasted coffee, dark chocolate with just a hint of coconut. Not at all sweet, but not bitter. Medium bodied and carbonated, easy to drink. Wish there was a little bit more coconut.

Canned 8/12/2015. The pour is a light mahogany brown color. In the glass, the body looks black but up the a light some ruby red highlights are shown along the edges and the head is thick, creamy with a light tan color. The aroma was a bit unexpected, lots of dark fruits, earthy molasses, good roasted qualities, a nuttiness, toasted coconut is evident, oats, smoked malts, and unsweetened cocoa. Medium mouth feel with lots of carbonation, it has a velvety sensation going down with a bitter roast aftertaste. In the flavor, I get milk chocolate, earthy (almost stale) hops, vanilla, unsweetened toasted coconut, roasted grains, toffee sweetness, and heavy cream. Nuanced complexity. I also noted a slight dry pepper skin quality that I get in beers brewed with chili peppers. Tastes like it has more age on it than it really does. Doesn't feel like a traditional porter; it has more of a stout consistency to it.

Dark brown where only the brightest of lights pass. Good webby lace from a modest head.

I get the same metallic smell (iron) as I did from the Maui IPA. Distracting.

A bit of a gimmicky beer. I like the coconut, but the porter is a bit pedestrian. It starts with some toasted (chocolate) malts. The swallow and finish bring forth the coconut. It's nice but a simple twist.

Dark brown approaching black. Full tan head with chunky lacing. Sweet nose, toasted coconut, vanilla, nutty malt. Carbonation compliments body well. Toasted astringency from coconut, sweet sasparilla, yam, and pine form a pleasantly dry and sweet brew.

Very dark, looks like a stout but with a thinner head. Smells like smoked coffee porter, no hint of coconut in the aroma. Slight coconut in the taste a little overwhelmed by the coffee and smoke flavor. Mouth feel is very nice for something shipped from the island to the east coast and sat in my fridge for a few weeks. I think this is a good beer to stash away for aging, the last one in the pack was better than the first and many weeks passed between tastings.

Didn't smell coconut, only chocolate and coffee. Very smooth in taste, like the coffee I get from Papua New Geuina. Hint of chocolate but no coconut.

I'm only a noob in beer tasting so I'm giving you what I smell and taste.

The look is black with a nice head. For a coconut porter, I'd expect more coconut.

Dark brown, translucent at the edges, small head quickly fades. Smell of coconut is first and foremost. Taste is also dominated by coconut with some chocolate and roast, not too sweet or desert-like but a bit mild in taste dept. Body is medium, smooth. Nice but could be a bit tastier.

Appearance: Oh yes it's very dark with a dark beige frothy head about one finger thick that upon thinning out leaves behind thick lacing.

Aroma: Vanilla bean, wisps of coconut, chocolate malts roasted hops, bits of espresso in the back.

Taste: Chocolate malt bite in the front. Dark roasted hops and malts. Espresso, the coconut kicks in with some good force at the end. The finish is silky smooth with a full body. Cheers.

A - Black body with a huge tan head leaves heavy lacing. A great looking brew.
S - Lightly roasted malts, some coco sweetness. A hint of coconut.
T - Traditional porter, roasted malt, light coco. Coconut itself is quite subdued. Canned on 9/9/15. 3 months ago maybe it had faded? Coconut lingers and actually shows up as an aftertaste. It's a nice finish.
M - medium/thick a little too thick body low carb. Smooth as silk.
O - A nice subtle coconut porter. Definitely a different animal than Death by Coconut. Easier to drink.

So, you're in Maui. It is reasonable to expect some coffee and coconut in your beer, correct? Thankfully, the Maui Brewing folks have pulled the roasted (burnt) malt, coffee and the ever-so-faintest hint of coconut together into one statisfying brew. I never pictured myself on the beach, swilling cans of this stuff. Instead, it the stuff of after-dinner, sunset views and the pure relaxation that comes from a trip to this place.

Appearance was traditional of a porter, but a bit darker than some. Frothy head stuck around for a while into the first drink or two, the aroma was like a nutty porter overwhelmingly coconut! The excitement faded as the taste was overwhelmingly coconut, much less than the smell. I'm sure they did what could be done, but will not buy this one again.

Serving type: 12 oz can into a pint glass.

Pours a dark amber brown with lighter brown edges. Smells of cold strong coffee, toasted malts, slightly charred, and with an extremely subtle toasted coconut. The coffee is very apparent but the coconut (especially for something called "CoCoNut Porter") is almost non-existent. Taste reflects the smell, strong initial coffee taste, toasted and slightly charred maltiness, small bitterness, leading into a subtle toasted coconut aftertaste. Again, very coffee forward but the coconut is very subtle, especially for something with coconut in the name. The feel is light and creamy, very drinkable with the flavor profile with is akin to a cold pressed coffee. Overall, this beer was a slight disappointment. It has great coffee and roasted malt scents and flavors but the coconut was way too subtle for my liking. If it was rebranded as a coffee coconut porter, I would have rated it much higher. This doesn't mean it was a bad beer though. In fact, this beer is very good but I was let down by the lack of a stronger or more noticeable coconut aspect.

Had at my dad's house. He bought it in a 4-pack of 12 oz. cans from Total Wine. Stamp on the bottom says Canned on 8/27/15. Poured from the can into a shaker pint glass.

Look: Pours a very deep dark reddish brown, almost black. It remains dark even when held up to the light. Great big frothy tan head on top that lingers for a while.

Smell: Dark roasted malts, but not much else.

Taste: Follows the smell, tons of roasted malt character. The coconut only enters in the aftertaste and is subtler than expected, but very enjoyable. Some hoppy bitterness rounds out the strong malt flavor. It's weird... with some sips I get a strong coconut kick, and with others I get none.

Feel: Light bodied, a bit thin, quite drinkable for a porter.

Overall: A really nice twist on the standard porter. The coconut is not overpowering, and in fact a bit hard to find, but pleasant overall.
