Brewing with pineapple juice apparently results in a beer that looks like pineapple juice. A chunk of yeast the size of a tennis ball came out the can, but no physical remnants of it show in the glass, however, the beer has, despite being bright, a completely murky complexion as result. Fruit juice not only ruined clarity, it also seems to have killed off head retention.

The pineapple juice can be vividly smelled; it is fruity and acidic but also a little bit rank, as if they used fruit that was too over-ripe to eat. It also seems sugary enough to induce diabetic shock and has a prevalent, pleasant, almost ginger-like zest. You're getting what you paid for; if you're a fan of pineapple there's nothing to complain about.

Would it be too obvious to say that Mana Wheat tastes of pineapple? Probably. But the fruit doesn't exactly run away with the flavour - the taste of pale malt (an almost white bread level plain dosage of it) takes firm hold on the tongue, formidably holding off some of the sugar onslaught. Hops, too, are vaguely noted, helping contain all the acidic sugars.

Wheat lightens the beer and ensures maximum refreshment. Speaking of top notch, the carbonation should be lowered a rung or two; this can was under as much pressure as a well shaken can of spray paint (as the grenade-like 'bang!' hinted upon opening). The finish is sugary, no doubt, but also features that savory, zesty powdered ginger flavour.

I didn't much enjoy the (few) pineapple beers I had had to this point, but I sure did enjoy Mana Wheat. It's as refreshing as a pre-moistened toilette and is a solid example of a style that is so often predictable and underwhelming. While a bit middling, it benefits from the same high-quality craftsmanship that characterizes all Maui Brewing beers.

Pours half a finger of head on a clear straw body.
The aroma is pineapple and lemon. Nice.
The taste is mildly sweet, the pineapple plays nicely. Refreshing.
The texture is crisp.
It's enjoyable.

Pours a white soapy head atop a golden body. Decent head, though not very thick and doesn’t enlarge much as I agitate.

Aromas of oranges, mild honeybread, and tinges of wheat. I would think the wheat would be fairly prevalent. A pleasant bouquet regardless of the lack of strong wheat aroma. Oh and I may be one of the few that DIDN’T smell pineapple or pineapple juice in the nose. Perhaps if I would have read the label I may have convinced myself of the existence of pineapple smell. Hmmmm…

Similar to the aromas, flavors of orange and honey, with the wheat much more prevalent and including some tasty banana as well. The finish exhibits a little pilsner malt that unfortunately does not enhance the flavor profile.

Light mouthfeel, with a generally dry finish.

Overall, a drinkable wheat beer that has a couple flaws, case in point: a seeming lack of integration between the flavors, and an awkward finish. Imagine drinking a sweet, tasty wheat beer that finishes like a Pilsner Urquell. Some people may like that; I don’t. However, it’s decent enough to warrant another try, if not at least to appreciate what the brewery is trying to do here, namely, produce a tropically exotic pale wheat ale.

Where's my ukulele?? I guess I'll go ahead and pass on a bit of knowledge to everyone here. First things first, it isn't pronounced "you-kuh-lay-lee". The correct pronunciation is "ooh-koo-lei-lei" of two words, uku and lele, put together. When Portuguese migrants came to Hawaii, they brought very small guitar like instruments. They played so quickly that the natives couldn't see their fingers move. Hence, someone said: "Look. Their fingers (lele) move like fleas (uku). So, ukulele translates to "flea fingers".

As for the beer. Eh. So so. I never seem to enjoy trying many wheat beers it seems. This one is hearty, but kind of oddly earthy in a way. There seems to be some vegetal thing in on the mix here, which is somewhat different. And this touch of odd smoky kind of thing. I don't know what that's about, but I want to say it has something to do with pineapple. Overall, it is pretty drinkable, but there is something about it that seems muted. I think the pineapple are offering some unusual character to this one.

12 oz. can,

A: Pours a cloudy dark orange, very light head, no lace, poor appearance for a wheat beer.

S: Fruity/banana with some sweet malt, definite pineapple.

T: Banana actually comes out so it's good to see they're actually using a hefe yeast. Pineapple is nice, noticable. Fairly sweet.

M: Light-bodied, fizzy carbonation, smooth.

D: A solid wheat beer, I liked how the hefe and pineapple came together, but not a beer I'd rush out and by again.

12oz Can - Thanks to frenchy for this one

Appearance – Hazy amber colour with a large size fizzy white coloured head. There is an average amount of carbonation showing and there is some fair lacing. The head lasted for around 5 minutes before it was gone and there are some floaties/chunks in the beer.

Smell - Grains/wheat, lemons, coriander/cloves, banana, pineapple, apples

Taste & Mouth - The beer has a high amount of carbonation and most of the taste is made up of wheat mixed with pineapple and a bit of coriander. I can pick up on the alcohol, which is strange. There is also a strong herbal taste and coriander/cloves and a hint of banana. It ends with a slightly tart spicy aftertaste.

Overall – I was hoping this would have a little more ripe pineapple taste. It's more of a unripened pineapple flavour going on. It's a good beer that I'm happy I chance to try, but I wouldn't seek it out.

Poured into my Kellerweis weisen glass.

Golden poppy, slightly hazy and topped with a one-inch, mocha-colored head that pops away quickly, leaving a silky blanket laying atop. Some soft lace on the sides.

Smooth, fruity nose. Banana, pineapple, hints of pear and clove. Soft and sweet.

Fruit permeates the flavor at the front, with pineapple, banana and pear again. The swallow is surprisingly drying, displaying biscuity malt through the finish.

A strange mouthfeel, smooth and creamy yet a bit thin. Carbonation is extremely low, adding to the velvety texture.

The pineapples, applied with a deft touch, are refreshing and subtly sweet. Overall, it’s not bad. A decent beer for the pool or golf course.

Pours a cloudy golden wheat color--looks like a pineapple appropriately enough--with a pretty nice white head.

Smells of pineapple juice, tart wheat, pepper.

Much of the same, sweet pineapple juice, nice wheaty character with a lightly tart character, some pepper and yeast on the finish.

Good full carbonation, refreshing mouthfeel.

I like this! More successful than most of the fruit wheat experiments out there.

A: The beer pours a cloudy gold with slight hints of orange and a big head that sticks to the rim of the glass.
S: While this is a pineapple beer, you definitely get hints of pear and and apple as well as a nice pineapple with no sweetness but does enhance the wheat.
T: This beer has a very bready flavor too it and only sports some slight sour pineapple flavor at the end. It is really more of a subtle finish that dries out the flavor of the wheat malt.
M/O: The beer has a nice carbonation and is very refreshing. Not too strong but very balanced considering that some of these beers with fruit can overdo it.

Appearance: Pours a hazy honey color with a rather modest head for a wheat beer; leaves decent lacing, however

Smell: Wheat bread with pineapple juice

Taste: Toasted wheat bread with a developing pineapple juice character; not as sweet or as tropical as I would have expected nor does it have much hoppy bitterness, either; in the aftertaste the pineapple really comes through, however

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: I thought this was going to be much more interesting than it turned out to be; should be popular with the masses

A-It looks like a hefe. Nice pale gold and hazy. Lots of lacing.
S- This has the hefe banana mixed a with a pineapple smell. Very tropical.
T- The banana starts the taste with the pineapple following. The pineapples starts out good but leaves a funky aftertaste.
MO- I know this is considered an American wheat ale and as a hefe lover I consider them when tasting the American versions as well. Saying that this one is just average. I do appreciate the use of the local fruits.

Faint beery aroma but with a nice fruity nose. Just a quick mouthful of suds with some odd fruity flavors. Some carbonation but not so spritzy as many wheats. Light body without much malt. Just slightly tart. Pleasant and lightly fragrant. The barest hints of wheat malt.

This one makes it seem like pineapple is a natural for brewing with. Fortunately the flavor is on the subtle side. This could put the Blonde Ales out of business. It actually tastes better as it warms up a little. A beery light beer with a touch of flavor, if that's what you're hoping for. From the 12 oz can bought at Beercraft in San Diego.

Appearance: Cloudy orange-gold color with a one and a half inch of frothy head that subsides to a half inch later on.

Smell: Has a funky wet wheat scent with a sweet grain smell.

Taste & Mouthfeel: Just as the scent indicated...getting a "funky" wheat flavor. Lighter in body with a dry, almost menthol aftertaste. Sweet pineapple flavor comes in during the halfway mark and expands toward the end, with a spike. The pineapple flavor melds well with the wheat, but there is something just a bit off putting with the flavor. Carbonation is medium to high for this beer.

Overall: Had a few of these on a hot BBQ day and I remember liking it much better than when I sat down for this after dinner beer review. I like the unusual take on this Wheat ale and will drink this again, but not as great as I once thought it was. Might have overrated it while I was in the moment.

On tap at Flatbread Company in Paia, Maui, Hawaii.

Pours a hazy light yellow orange with a 1 inch foamy white head that settles to a film on the top of the beer. No lacing on this one. Smell is of wheat, spices, yeast, and some pineapple notes. Taste is of wheat, spices, and a pretty good pineapple flavor. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp and clean mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good wheat beer but the pineapple comes across better in the flavor over the smell.

Stopped by at one of my favorite beer stores and discovered they had the new mana wheat in by Maui brewing! Picked up a sixer and went to a friends house to share it with her. It pours a really golden color mixed with a little orange in it. The beer is hazy, but not to dense. The smell was what you would expect from a wheat beer with the little exception of pineapples, yep, pineapples. The taste was yeasty, but the acidity of the pineapples really balanced out the flavor quite well. It was going down nice and smooth on a hot Hawaiian day!!!

Where IS my ukelele? I would feel a bit more comfortable playing a stringed instrument with one of these in my hand. It is a wheat ale, and it is a solid wheat ale - make no mistake! I had to search hard for the promised pineapple, but that did not detract from my enjoyment of this beer. If you want an thirst quenching but substantial beer to enjoy in Hawaii, give this a try!

Poured into 9oz pilsener glass. Poured a fairly typical semi-cloudy gold color with over 1/2 inch of white head that had OK retention and light lacing.

The aroma was good, a very nice blend of wheat and malt, with just a hint of yeast. The flavors started out the same, then developed a bit more complexity at the back. The beer was a bit tart, had a crisp finish and just a little bit of pineapple came in at very end.

The body was nice, crisp, smooth and dry. Drinkability was very good, knocking off a sixer while enjoying the nice summer weather would be too easy. Overall, a very nice take on the style. A very enjoyable beer that's worth your time if you see it.

Cloudy straw color, aroma of a sweet beer and pineapple juice,
Light beer with pineapple flavor. But not artificial, tastes like actual pineapples.

Not my thing but not bad. There’s a time and a place for a beer like this. I’d have another while grilling out or toobing down the river.

On-tap 4/19/2016 at Doherty’s Ale House in Warwick, RI, served in a tapered pint glass.

A: The beer is a light gold color, with a large foamy white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains fruity citrus, wheat, some spices and a touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out sweet with strong citrus flavors of grapefruit and tangerine up front. Then some breadiness comes in from wheat and a hearty but not too heavy malt character. The hops presence is very mild and brings a decent balance. The after-taste is sweet.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: A little tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, mild kick, good representation of style, this is a decent beer to drink for a while.

Poured from a 12oz can into my Ayinger weissbier glass.

Pale gold, not quite clear liquid topped briefly by a half finger of ivory which rapidly fizzes away to nothing. No real lacing to speak of either...

Strong banana aroma, light orange (creamsicle?), and faint wheat in the nose.

Bananas come forward once again on the palate, along with very low level pineapple juice notes, though these are easy to mistake for light fruit esters. Low bitterness, as the hops seem rather restrained. Slighly odd finish which is sweet/tart and somewhat grainy. No off notes though.

Light bodied, with what appears to be decent carbonation, though head formation/retention is incredibly poor.

An approachable summer beer - good for a picnic or pool party - but not too impressive on its own.

Poured from a can into a standard pint glass.

Pours a cloudy orangish amber with a small layer of off white head that fades to a ring around the glass.

Smell: A mild sweetness from the malt with a hint of tropical fruit.

Taste: Light and crisp, pretty refreshing. Some pineapple, but not way too much. Not much sweetness to speak of.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with tingly carbonation and a very dry finish.

Overall: Nice and refreshing, I enjoyed the use of pineapple. I wouldn't call it great, but I would have another.

Not a real complex beer but rather a summer patio quencher that makes good use of the wheat notes and the added pineapple flavour . Not too sweet and quite nice on the finish this is easy drinking and decent for the style. Compares with Kona's wheat beer though they use passionfruit as an addition. Tastes better on a Maui beach.
