Lorenzini Double IPALorenzini Double IPA

Brewed by:
Maui Brewing Co.
Hawaii, United States

Style: American Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.60%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
A special beer for a special cause. The name comes from the sharks "Ampullae of Lorenzini", the shark's electro sensory organ used to detect changes in electric fields. This American Double IPA was brewed with blood orange, local citrus, and Maui cane sugar. The unique hop profile of Azacca, El Dorado, and Sorachi Ace lend big grapefruit, ripe mango and tropical aromas, followed by a clean, mildly sweet bitterness. At 7.6% abv and approximately 80 IBUs this is a deceptively drinkable Double IPA.

Serving glass: Poured from tap into Tulip.

Appearance: Clear golden amber with thin white head and slight lacing.

Smell: Grapefruit and toasted malt, light tropical fruit and pine.

Taste: Some light toasted and caramel malts but this is all about the hops, which reign supreme with loads of grapefruit and some mango and pine. Somewhat bitter finish, but more hoppy than bitter.

Feel: Moderate carbonation, medium to full creamy body, nice dry finish.

Drinkability: Very strong DIPA. Nice collaboration between my go to Maui brewery and one I have yet to try.

Blood Oranges, Bitter, Tropical, Bready

Orange-amber with red hues, Lorenzini is cloudy with loads of particles in suspension and an off-white foamy lace with legs. The aroma offers fresh orange, tropical fruit, floral and herbal notes. Big blood orange flavors, a hit of mango, bright citrus edges and a zesty undertone provide an even bitterness. A bit bready with hints of chocolate, caramel and richer layer of sweetness from the Maui cane sugar, which really works with the blood orange. And by using Azacca, El Dorado and Sorachi Ace hops, it's a refreshing break from all of the heavy-handed Amarillo-Cascade-Simcoe hop bombs out there.

Had on tap at the brew-pub yesterday. Poured into a 10oz snifter.
Described as a blood orange DIPA.
Nose was standard fare DIPA. Hoppy and fruity though I didn't get much of the blood orange.
Color was a deep dark orange, not at all what I was expecting but not in a bad way.
Head was thin but lacing was present throughout the entire pour.
Taste was hoppy and fruity but quickly faded which was a letdown. Hop forward and fruit and the end but a quick drop off.
Not a bad beer at all but given the fact that the other beer on the table, HI Standards, was amazing, maybe that lead to my disappointment.
Give it a try if you see it.

12 oz can. Pours hazy copper orange with big floaties and a medium creamy off white head the retains well and leaves some lacing.

The aroma is lots of fruity piney hops, but fades quickly.

The flavor is bready malts and some fruit with some metallic hops. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and a bit watery.

Overall, was intrigued, but Deschutes Fresh Squeezed accomplishes what I though this would be much better.

12 oz can..."canned on 090116" on the bottom" so about 7 weeks in the can

Pours moderatly cloudy, a nice shade of medium amber, sturdy and lasting khaki head, a nice looking film, and extensive fields of fine sheeting all up and down the glass...nice looking brew

Pungent hopped up sniff, with ripe melon, mango and pineapple coming to mind.

Delicious DIPA, big, bold, flavorful and highly enjoyable...more of the same from thenose, big fresh tropical fruit notes, along with some smoke on the back end...ample maple malts to balance thing out..10% brew with not quite all the alcohol in check...high quality DIPA in a can, all the way from Hawaii...nice

12oz can, part of a minor slew of new products from this brewery arriving in Alberta of late.

This beer pours a mildly hazy, medium bronzed amber hue, with three fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and rather bubbly ecru head, which leaves some static transmission lace around the glass as it slowly ebbs away.

It smells of rather dank pine resin, mixed citrus fruits - sweet orange, white grapefruit - muddled tropical sugary esters, bready caramel malt, further spicy, leafy hops, and a twinge of metallic alcohol. The taste is big tangerine, red grapefruit, and exotic orange citrus, a lessened musty pine needle bitterness, further fleshy mango fruit notes, gritty, grainy caramel malt, and a softly spicy, leafy, and kind of perfumed hoppiness.

The carbonation is impressive in its subtle, mouth-filling support, the body a solid medium-heavy weight, and generally smooth, a slight clamminess inherent in the variable dankness of the hops. It finishes on the sweet side, all that extra fruitiness really having no other option in terms of ubiety.

A decent version of the style, the adjuncts definitely rendering a certain Hawaiian sense through it all. Tasty, and not particularly sweet overall, despite what I may have already just written. And hopefully the proceeds from this brew help make the shark depicted on the label appear a little more upbeat!

Pours a finger of head on a hazy dark straw body.
The aroma is a rounded orange, lemon and tangerine mixture.
The taste starts out malty, then quickly moves through three different waves of bitterness. Finishes long and bitter.
The texture is thicker and crisp.
The flavor profile is great, but a little too bitter overall for me.

Pours an effervescent amber with a thumb+ of cream colored head. Some floaties
( orange related, I'm sure ). Stays effervescent throughout, very good lacing & good head retention

S: Orange peel, grapefruit & breadyness

T: Orange rind bitterness, a little grapefruit, a little dryness & biscuitty malt. Grapefruit, orange rind & dryness as this warms. Orange rind bitterness & faint biscuitty malt sweetness in the finish.

MF: Medium bodied, fairly lively carbonation, pretty good balance

Drinks easy, a little to bitter to stay on for too long

I really struggled with the massive amount of suspended floaters in this beer. Obviously, they were pieces of blood orange, and maybe I could've stomached it if they helped to create a bright, citrusy beer, but instead I thought this one a bit musty and muddled. I think the application of the citrus needs to be rethought here.

Pours a light reddish-gold color with average head and light, spotty lacing. Aroma is of cool, orange and other assorted citrus, lightly dank !. Flavor is bold with orange flavor being dominant. Lots of floaties in this beer, hopefully it is just orange pulp.. Mouthfeel is pleasant and cool and this is a great brew from this brewery !!
