Weeping Radish beers have only recently began appearing in the Triangle area after a hiatus. After reading about this beer and the Pumpkin Bock in Southern Brewing News, I encountered them at the excellent Sam's Quik Stop in Durham and picked up a bottle of each for around $5.

The Christmas Bier pours a rich cola-brown (you know, that distinctive caramel coloring hue), with a smattering of bubbles that dissipate quickly into a lean, tan foam that congregates around the point of contact with the glass. Munich malts are certainly detectable with a big sniff. It's grainy and slightly sweet to the nose, with a mild dark cherry essence lingering in the background. The taste is unlike any doppelbock I've sampled; the strong, malty flavor I'm used to is replaced by a sweet, grainy front that mellows into a slightly more complex and nutty flavor. It really shines in the aftertaste; there, a nice malty, nutty flavor combines with a bit of hop bitterness and provides the taster with a nicely balanced taste of each that lingers on and on. As I just stated, it's not like many I've sampled, but it's certainly charming in its own way. The mouthfeel is quite nice, but a little bubbly for my taste. (Again, it's very much like cola.) This is certainly a very "drinkable" beer, but the high ABV will sneak up on you, so be careful!!
