Poured into pint glass during Portland Mighty Mites small beer festival~

Okay, it says porter, but it reminds me more of a bock!

Pours a light black, clear brown hue with good carbonation and pretty much zero head or lace. Looks like root beer. Seriously.

On the nose this is fun with cocoa, smoke, and a mild malt character framed by currant and a hint of anise and spice. Palate is rather a supreme disappointment; thin and lackluster with quickly fleeting flavors focused on smoke and brown sugar. Really does remind me of a bock...

So I said before... reminds me of a bock... and if it were a bock I would have given it decent marks, but as a porter it falls flat on it's face. It tastes like a porter that water was added to after the fact.

Tasted again at Belmont Station:
Much better than the previous go around, perhaps this is a better batch. Light in body and a touch smokey, this time around it tasted more like a light porter than a bock. Still it's very light. Good roasted coffee, smoke nuance on the nose and palate. Not overly smokey though.

On tap @ the Oakshire Brewing (Eugene, OR) on 9/3/11. Served in a pint glass.

Pours black in the glass, with a thinnish head of light mocha colored froth. This retains with some rich edges and wisps that skim the middle, putting up a foamy cascade that quickly slides down and leaves back some light spotty lacing. The aroma smells light chocolate notes and crisp green hops. The combo of light smoky roast and the grassiness from the hops really adds airiness to this in the nose. This is fairly simple but pulled off well.

The taste is light bittersweet chocolate notes that are set against some fairly flat feeling citric hops. There is a pleasant light roastiness across the back that hangs a bit of gentle smokiness on the breath after each sip. The finish is dry with a slight roasted astringency that lingers. The mouthfeel has a lighter to medium bodied feel to it and has a bit more presence to it than I would have suspected for sub 4%. This combines with a prickly creaminess from the carbonation to really keep this very drinkable.

Wow, I really liked the craftsmanship that went into this one. They really packed a decent amount of flavor into its low ABV body, with this having just the right amount of smoke and the hops, while not providing a ton of character, adding a nice tight crispness to the profile that really gave this a solid refreshing quality. This is perfect for someone looking for a little dark beer action in their summer beer drinking.

Enjoyed this from the brewery from a pint, then a growler to take home as well.

A- Poured into a pint, forming a light tan head, which disappears soon after being poured.

S- Notes of coffee, smoke, and bitter chocolate.

T- A swirling combination of light smoke and coffee roastyness.

M- Light and thin, which works for this style.

O- I really enjoy this beer for it's small beer, sessionable qualities. Easy drinkability for those who don't enjoy smoke too much. I recommend this smokey porter to those who want something just a bit off the beaten path.
