Notes: Collaboration with Holy Mountain Brewing & Modern Times Beer

Among the swelling base and heavily hopped riffs, a uniting dissonance appears. Wheat and oats load in sustained distortion and vast amounts of feedback. From the juice yeast emerges an ethereal realm with suspended ambient fruit and lupulin resonance. Aromatic and resinous, the primal essence of Modern Times, Holy Mountain, and Fort George rises like a Monolith … no, make that a Triolith of IPA reverence. 3-Way IPA, reverbating across the Pacific Northwest starting June 2018.

2018, from a one week old can (5/28/18).

3-Way looks like melted butter. The goal, I believe, and well executed. The yellowy-orange cream has a thin off white head which leaves a good concaved ring around the glass, decent surface coverage, and some minimal spotty lacing from head to toe.

The smell is straight up mango and vanilla shake. I can see people might argue guava, papaya, yada yada, but to me, mango...and vanilla yogurt.

Though I'd say that is the dominant driving force behind the flavor as well, there are some other things going on here. Passion fruit? Cactus fruit? Something like that right in the middle before a citrus rind like bite, almost tart even, and finally a dusty hop finish.

As expected, this starts very smooth and creamy. But as I mentioned in the flavor, there is a quick sharp tartness combined with a tingly carbonation. The bitterness is not exactly intense, but it does manage to linger for quite some time between sips.

Did I expect more from Holy Mountain, Fort George, and Modern Times? Perhaps a little, but this is pretty damn good. Maybe even better in another week or two. It seems to have that signature Modern Times hazy beer yeast, but let's not get ahead of myself. Always look forward to these 3-Ways. Cheers.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a very hazy, opaque chalky yellow amber with a fine two finger white head with great retention and thick lacing. Classic NE hazy IPA aroma of tropical fruit and light citrus hops, mango, pineapple, lemon and a little grapefruit; tropical fruit dominates. Flavor is pale malt, citrus and tropical fruit hops, grapefruit, lemon, light mango, kiwi and passion fruit. Long, lingering grapefruit and lemon rind hop finish. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess and good carbonation; nice mouth feel. I'm on the fence with this one. It has a nice hop bitterness bite to the finish, which I like a lot, but the fruit flavors are rather simple and are dominated by grapefruit and citrus, with lighter tropical fruit flavors. The aroma is much more tropical fruit forward, but there is less tropical in the taste. The main taste is plainer than expected and leans heavily to grapefruit. I'm won over by the nice bitter finish, you can really taste the herbal hop citrus flavors for quite a while. I never miss a 3-Way offering, and I'm not too excited that it's a hazy, but grateful it's got nice alpha hops bitterness and doesn't taste just like fruit juice.

Refreshing and very tasty. I guess I’m being helplessly sucked into the haze craze. No problem; I’m trying out a lot of new (to me anyway) IPAs here in the early summer and this one rates highly. Beautiful color that compliments the haze, but the head is a little weak. Low key aroma, but the taste is everything I could ask for (short of the truly world class). Very juicy but not without some piney resins and nice bitter notes. Decent malt background, which many hazy IPAs lack. Excellent feel, very creamy. A real pleasure at the end of a very physical work day.

16 oz can purchased from Lifesource Natural Grocers in Salem OR.
Pours a turbid/muddy/milky brown colour..small bubbly white head.
Very fresh fruity..aromas..orange peel, mango, papaya and peach.
Taste somehow more traditional PNW bitter..some dank and mint along with the pith.
Palate is very nice thick and smooth and not to cloying in the end.
OK but not that good to be honest...please can we start the end of this ghastly muddy beer trend?

Appearance: Pours an exceedingly cloudy goldenstraw with a two finger head; decent retention and spotty lacing

Smell: Tropical and citrus fruit; dank, with a honeyed vanilla element; cantaloupe envelops

Taste: Guava, papaya, pineapple and cantaloupe, lead off, with with the citrusy tangerine bitterness building, through the middle and after the swallow; underneath, a honeyed vanilla element lingers into the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: Starts out in New England but makes a honey bee line for the West Coast

Thanks, PrynneCabin, for the opportunity

Can from Beermongers.

A hazy orange with a thin, white head that falls off rapidly leaving little lacing, this looks OK. The nose is par for the course. Juicy, fruity and with less grassiness than typical, though it does have a hint of aspirin present. Fresh squeezed OJ, some peach and passionfruit along with a little papaya are present. The palate opens fruity with honey, OJ, passionfruit juice and a blend of papaya and melon. Bright and fruity, though also a bit pulpy, this beer is medium in body and moderately carbonated. Mildly bitter on the finish with lingering fruit and a touch of aspirin, this beer is solid.

Can dated 05/31/18 into a tulip.

L: Pours hazy yellow bronze with two fingers of medium density white head with minimal retention and left nearly non-existent lacing.

S: Very tropical but mute nose. Seems prominent in passion fruit, mango, and pineapple.

T: Follows the nose well, but with a subtle added citrus dimension. Finished with limited bitterness and moderate astringency, astringency lingers.

F: Low-medium bodied with medium carbonation, slightly lively on the tongue with a bit of burn from astringency and carbonation.

O: For a hazy collab recipe, last year's seemed to hit far more of the mouthfeel. There's aspects that I like, but I won't be seeking out more than the 4-pk I brought back from OR.
