Served on tap at Pints Urban Taproom at 412 NW 5th Ave in Portland, OR.

A: Beautiful. Blacker than black with great lacing and head retention.

S: Chocolate and caramel roasted malts.

T: The roasted malts don't come through as much as you would expect based on the color of the beer, and I think that is a good thing. This is definitively a lager with just a hint of the roasted malts that make it unique.

M: Full-bodied and finishes nicely.

O: These small-batch experiments by craft brewers, while usually interesting, don't turn out this good very often. The Coalminer's Dark Lager is a great brew, and I would love to see Fort George make room for it in their regular line-up or at least as a seasonal.

Served in straight pint glass. Poured a nearly solid black color, only a slight bit of reddish translucence at the edges, and about 5/8 of an inch of dark tan head that had decent retention and lacing.

The front of the aroma was the expected light, grainy, malt with a hint of soft hops. But then, a solid dose of roast hits and takes over the the scent. The flavor story is pretty similar, a nice, balanced lager that gets a touch overwhelmed by the roasted notes.

The body was about what was expected, light, smooth, and even. The roast taste lingered a long time on the finish. Drinkability was pretty good, I personally would get tired of the roast after a couple pints, but YMMV. Overall, another fine brew from the crew at FG. Certainly worth a shot if you see it, and probably worth making a trip to your local pub if you hear they have this brew on tap.

Pours a thick black color, with a tan head. Served on tap, so I can't definitively report head stature, but retention is okay for what I was given. As I drink it leaves some thin rings of lacing. Smell is of sweet and roasted malts. Taste hilights the roasted malts again, as well as some grassy or floral hops, but they are subtle. Mouthfeel is average, subtle carbonation. This is an enjoyable beer, very full taste.
