1 PINT 0.9 FL OZ bottle
Served in a snifter

This beer pours black and is topped with an inch of tan head that leaves some real nice lacing.

Oak and booze seem to be the dominant aromas. I get some dark chocolate and anise too.

The taste isn't boozy like the smell. Dark chocolate, oak, and some bourbon flavors are detectable. Dry finish.

Medium to full bodied. Low carbonation

This is a solid beer. More oak than bourbon character.

Quick: look and smell are top of the list. It looks beautiful, and is matched with an aroma that is barrel strong. The flavor is big and boozy. The barrel is up front and there is a definite booze burn. You also get the rye quite easily. Feel is medium as is carbonation.

For me this was good, but it did not live up to expectations. A good beer oversold.

Overall this is a great bourbon stout. Been aging it since the beginning of the year. Smell of strong bourbon. Taste is strong bourbon up front, followed by black licorice, molasses, nuttiness, bread and some of that rye. Feel is dry but with bite! Only reason I didn't go higher is because it could be thicker and more syrupy in the feel I think. But I love the heavy bourbon notes and high ABV. Another good one from my old stomping grounds in the Cascades. Cheers from Idaho.

500ml brown bottle. Pours out with a huge billowy tan coloured head. The head sticks around too, excellent retention, small bubbles and super creamy, looks like a coffee with crema. Pitch black liquid, hard to see any brown tinges at all. Phenomenal looking Imperial Stout.

First whiff I actually had a bit of a time coaxing the aroma, surprisingly mild was my first observation. Gave my glass a few swirls and the beer releases some lovely wooden bourbon notes, a bit of licorice and vanilla, cinnamon, figs and dried prunes, brown sugar, maple syrup. However, I was expecting the aroma to be a little more bold--to me, it's surprisingly subtle for such a big beer. Not that I'm complaining. It smells wonderful, and I'm glad the phenols don't jump out and snack me in the nose too much. Tbh, as the beer breathes for a few minutes, the aroma does become more pronounced, and all that I'm smelling is very, very nice.

Mouthfeel is lush, full bodied, creamy without being sticky or oily. The carbonation is lively and gives it a nice spritziness. Fantastic on the tongue.

Usual suspects for flavour, lots of espresso and licorice, some dusty, wooden vanilla, maple syrup and even a hint of brandy. Raisins, figs and plenty of dark fruit, and ends more so in the sweet end of the scale, which I prefer. Very little dryness in the finish. I can taste the alcohol, but it is not detracting from the flavours at all. Gorgeous beer.

I've had 5 Imperial Stouts this weekend and I think this one takes the cake. I am actually quite surprised it rates "relatively" lowly on here. I had Oskar Blues Ten-Fidy last night, and, imo, Tenacious Ten beats that hands down.

Lovely, lovely stuff.

Lovely aroma of Bourbon. Color is pretty near black with plenty of beige foam and swirls of lacing in the narrow Bitburger pokal glass. Quite boozy with a heady sense of alcohol. Sharp and more acidic than lots of the big stouts.

Massive malt with a sharp edge. Burnt sugar taste but not very sweet, and maybe it's the rye that makes it more spicy but dry. Serious licorice taste takes over. Hoppy bitterness gives a jolt. Quite a barrel-flavored powerhouse plus that aroma of something going wild. Blackened but mellow caramel malt. From the 500 ml bottle purchased at the Platypus in Bend.

Black color. Caramel-colored, frothy head that receeds into a thin collar. Aroma is red wine, alcohol, bleach, vanilla and tomatoes. Sticky mouthfeel. Definitely taste alcohol but suprisenly not to much. The finish has a harsh sweetness to it. Taste chocolate and cherries. Carbonation is above average. As it warms up to room temperature it has a much more harsh alcohol presence to it. It is actually less enjoyable as time goes on. It is much more dry than when i first opened it. This beer is all over the map. It has its up and downs.

Type: 500-ml. bottle
Glass: AleSmith Barrel-Aged Reserve snifter
From: Bier:Thirty Bottle & Bistro in Boise, Idaho
Price: $11.99
Purchased: April 21, 2017
Consumed: May 7, 2017
Reviewed as: American Double / Imperial Stout
Misc.: Bottled in 2017 (educated guess of March)

Picked this up with four others at Bier:Thirty on a recent work trip to Boise after getting a random 6-pack of cans earlier at Whole Foods. Picked this up without even looking at the ratings. Just saw an anniversary BBA stout. Had vaguely heard of this brewery, but remembering having something from them at Stone for a work part. (Checks Untapped and confirms that I did not like Fa La La La La, giving it a 3 on Untappd on Dec. 16, 2015).

Poured a pitch black color with two fingers of frothy khaki tan head. Some light bubble streams coming up from the bottom of the glass. Excellent uneven spiderweb lacing. Excellent retention. (Sight - 4.25)

Was getting whiffs from far away, but once I actually got down to smell it, it wasn’t too hot. Got smooth bourbon, milk chocolate and cocoa to start. Actually got the booze more after a few whiffs. Very earthy in tobacco, oak, toffee and caramel. Also some vanilla, hints of coffee and dark fruits. A little hot overall on the nose, which got better as it warmed. (Smell - 4.25)

Taste followed the nose, maybe not quite as good. Lots of going on. Definitely boozy, no hiding that 11.5 pct., which was lingering after every sip. Also milk chocolate, oaky bourbon, toffee, caramel, vanilla, cocoa, chocolate syrup, dark fruits and a touch of coconut at the very end. (Taste - 4.00)

Full body. Creamy-to-sticky texture. Average carbonation. Long, boozy finish. (Feel - 4.00)

This was very good. I think it needed a lot more time than two months. Wish I would have gotten two bottles. (Overall - 4.00)

Dark appearance that is a little thin with tan head and little carbonation. Nice Bourbon aroma. Taste is a somewhat mild Bourbon with little alcohol aftertaste.

500ml bottle - now that's a mouth-full for a brew name if I ever heard one!

This beer pours a pretty solid black abyss, with subtle basal red cola edges, and three fingers of puffy, finely foamy, and mildly bubbly brown head, which leaves a bit of awkward coral reef lace around the glass as it lazily subsides.

It smells of gritty and grainy caramel malt, some mild oaked-up rye astringency, a bit of free-range ashiness, understated cafe-au-lait, bittersweet cocoa powder, and very tame earthy and perfumed floral hop bitters. The taste is rather Bourbon-forward up front (in an initially near gag-worthy sort of manner, I have to say) - what with the boozy and woody rye graininess - over some equally heady roasted caramel/toffee sweetness, pithy cocoa powder, outside the box vanilla, further indistinct breakfast cereal notes, and more rather meek earthy, weedy, and saucy floral hoppiness.

The carbonation is adequate via its barely palate prop-worthy frothiness, the body a decent medium-heavy weight, and sort of smooth, with nothing really making a case for messing with the scene here, as it were. It finishes trending dry, the barrel and associated alcohol essences bending us to their will.

Overall, this is a decent enough big-boy brew, even if the barrel character kind of steps all over things, drying everything out more than this sports fan might have preferred. Still, good on its own merits, and worth checking out if you like this sort of thing.
