I've had two chances to visit Double Mountain. Once, late on a Tuesday night after driving over 1,000 miles while moving from Colorado to Oregon. I was less than seventy miles from my new home in Portland, but I wanted to drive the Columbia River Gorge in daylight, so I stopped at Double Mountain before heading down the road to a state park to camp for the night. The second time, some months later, was with a group of friends. Both times, Double Mountain impressed me with its cozy, social atmosphere, beautifully shaped imperial pints, and quality beer. The pizza is also quite tasty, if slightly expensive. (What is it with Oregon brewpubs and their pricey pizza? That's right HUB, Laurelwood, Double Mountain...I'm looking right at you.)

The brewpub itself is small and intimate. It's also extremely popular, which means that it's hard to get a table. In other spaces, I might have felt that this was suffocating--really, there are only a handful of tables, a few seats at the bar, some outdoor seating, and a couch zone. But there's something about the setup here that works. It feels social and inviting, and I'm happy to see a new(ish) brewpub be so popular.

Charlie and the folks at Double Mountain keep six or seven house beers on tap. Their regulars include two standouts: the IRA and Hop Lava (IPA). Both see pretty regular rotation through many of Portland's restaurants and beer bars, and both are delicious. The IRA is on par with Green Flash and Bear Republic as far as "West coast" ambers go (Double Mtn's 'winter IPA' Fa La La La La might also be put into that category and doesn't disappoint, either) in setting a high standard for this emergent style. They also keep a very good pale ale on full time, as well as a fairly straightforward kolsch.

Overall, Double Mountain is a great, small stop between Portland and eastern Oregon, an up-and-coming local bar, and a growing, impressive brewery. Give them some of your time.

man, this place gets real busy on the weekends! packed out front, long waits for tables, so we skipped the food and just blasted into the standing room only bar for a kriek, which was a unique and inspired beer, but the experience was well worth it. the place is cool, bigger than it looks from the outside, with seating in the bar, the dining room, and outside, lines await whatever opens up, but they had no issues with beer on the sidewalk which was cool and uncommon. the kriek was the only one we had, but it was dope, packed with jammy cherries, strong and tart, blood red, dense, and delicious. the food they were serving turned me on too, but i will have to go back for that. cool sort of bohemian vibe in here, colorful and bright. the bartender was cool but he had no chance with the big crowds, two people back there couldnt meet the demand, so the few minutes we waited for his attention is not a negative in this instance. well our trip in here was a bit of a blow through because of the crowds, i definitely plan to go back, the beer was great and the scene was happening. great spot with an exciting and lengthy tap list of house beers.

Outstanding pizza, great beer, relaxed atmosphere. Not the best for kids, but not bad. Friendly but slightly inattentive. Cheers!

Great place to grab some pizza and a few beers. Food is good, wait is long, but that usually means they are doing something right. During my last visit the place was packed but the staff was very friendly and took great care of us. If you are into PNW style beers this is a great place to sample high quality craft.

Probably my favorite Oregon brewery. Nothing caps a day of riding or paddling more perfectly than a draft Vaporizer out on the sidewalk. Pizza is awesome and they always have the goods on seasonal taps...Pale Death is a must have if you can get it. And dogs are welcome....bonus.

Vibe is not quite as good since they expanded. Very crowded and too family friendly now. Still one of my favorite places to grab a beer after a long hike in the gorge. Awesome pizza.

This is certainly the "cooler" place to go in Hood River (when compared to Full Sail), but it's lagging behind in virtually every aspect in my opinion. It's worth a stop if you're in town, but not a detour.
