Picked this up in Totowa recently, having never tried this before. I'm not the biggest fan of Pumpkin Ales because they tend to be heavy and spicy but the latter certainly wasn't the case here. There was some cinnamon and nutmeg in this but not enough to cause a burn and since this didn't taste like pumpkin pie, there wasn't much of any vanilla or sugar to make this too sweet either. This was an Imperial beer though as the booze was quite strong and detectable from the start!

The pour to this was a dark apricot-copper with a moderate head and hardy any lacing to be seen. Lots of pumpkin in the nose, followed by the spices mentioned above. This almost tasted like a gourd once all of the flavors set in, with a chewy and cloying mouthfeel to back it up. Some booze in the taste too, as a slightly woody aftertaste kicked in when all was said and done. A nice, malty feel was felt from start to finish but I think there was too much here, as this was just a bit too overbearing for me.

I don't think that Pumpkin Ales should be this strong, even if they are of the Imperial type but this one crossed the line just a hair. I'd rather have one of these be strong than spicy since the flavor itself was easily worth savoring. It just couldn't be enjoyed that fast but given how so many beers of this style are close to being drain pours, that's a good thing. Not good enough as a dessert but more than worthy for this time of the year and full enough to enjoy on its own. Just don't plan on having too many in one sitting!
