The clear amber colored beer pours out into a Duvel glass with a 1/2” off white head that recedes to a thin layer of foam and a ring around the glass while leaving a partial ring which dome patches and legs of lacing. Sipping creates some scattered patches and several skinny legs of lacing.

The aromas include some bready malt and some light floral and citric character but is not particularly complex.

The flavors are much as expected from the nose with the malt backed up by some citric hops. There’s also some noticeable sweetness backing up a grassy and earthy bitterness that light but borders on being unpleasant.

The mouthfeel is on the light side of medium bodied and lightly prickly with the finely bubbled carbonation. The finish begins as the sweetness fades to leave the back of the palate filled with some floral character and some earthy, grassy bitterness that is smooth but almost unpleasant for being too heavy handed in an APA.

Overall this is just an ok Pale Ale since it lacks any subtlety in the dry finish which is dominated by the grassy earthy bitterness without really turning completely dry and inviting another sip.

Fegley's Brew Works "Always Sunny Pale Ale"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, "BTLON:012318 12:31 PM"

Notes via stream of consciousness: It's got a lovely head on it, two-fingers thick of creamy white foam. The body below is a clear golden with just a few tiny bubbles rising here and there. The aroma is hoppy with floral notes, some citrus, a light touch of pine, and a bit of earthy spiciness. There's some apple-like yeasty fruitiness in there as well, and some sweetish grainy malt comes through. It's not a bold aroma but it's fresh and welcoming. On to the flavor... the sweet malt comes through fuller, holding everything together, and there's a nice fruitiness across the middle followed by some grassiness and spiciness in the finish. Again, it's not bold, but neither is it lacking in flavor, and the transition from sweetish at the outset to fruity and then spicy and dry in the end is nice. A firm bitterness backs it, and some of that lingers in the finish as well. It's medium-light in body and moderately carbonated, giving it a delicate caress on the tongue before warming to become smooth. Nice! I kind of see it as being English in nature, but then there are some American hops that definitely swing it in that direction - so, a hybrid, which is actually perfect given the picture of Ben Franklin on the label. He was American but a lot of the people around him had English roots, as does this beer. It might not be bold but it's very nicely balanced and rounded, and highly drinkable.

Date: July 9, 2015... Glassware: Barley Creek pint... Occasion: sitting in between storms, enjoying thirsty Thursday with me, myself, and I... Appearance: a darker amber body than expected--considering its name--with little effervescence; off-white head pours thin but creamy, flattening to a reasonable quarter-inch; ling becomes sporadic but visible.... Aroma: pleasant lemon, citrus and freshly mowed hay; aromas are faint and suggest little malt presence or balance; some odd funk catches at the profile's end, turning a decent allure to a debatable one.... Palate: smooth, fizzy at the throat and a bit warming; creamy at the start, with a little sizzle at the teeth--thin in the middle, with an equally soft aftertaste... Taste: lemon zest battles some earthy, malty undercurrents--both may be losing; light bitterness cannot create a strong profile, though the citric hints of grapefruit and melon give the tastebuds something to contemplate--not a pale ale with a vast array of talent; the faint hint of flowers at the back end does leave me with a desire of another sip... Overall: Not sure how proud Franklin would be knowing he adorned this bottle--Yards offered a much better brew for Ben's image to plug; a decent beer to compliment chips or pretzels, but not much else to say...should I end up in Allentown, I would definitely try Fegley's other offerings before coming back to this...

Nice refreshing ale. Good color although a bit cloudy. This brewery seems to be a little over carbonated in the bottles.

12/28...on tap in Allentown...pours bright gold with active bubbles. Thick white foam. Pine nose and grapefruit in there too. Same comment on the taste. Medium body lends a nice even flavor throughout. Bitter bite. Sunny indeed.

Hate to be a prick but totally avg stuff. Smells and tastes like the Junior Varsity. I threatened to drain pour but decided to muscle thru. Not sure that was the right decision.
