My neighbor is sharing this beer with me. It poured an opaque black with ecru head that is not leaving any lace. The scent had hints of peat and anise. The taste is nicely balanced and easy to drink. There is earth and touch of sweetness. The Mouthfeel is fuller in body with smooth carbonation. Overall it's a solid beer. It

12 oz bottle from the brewery taproom shop.

Good looking: Pours very dark brown, opaque in the glass, with a large, foamy tan head.

Feel: creamy and full bodied feel. Soft, medium carbonation.

Rich and relatively complex, with a good suggestion of chocolate and a hint of coffee with the dark roasted malt character. Subtle hints of smoke and black licorice but negligible char. Lightly bitter finish with a lingering aftertaste of coffee and dark roasted grains.

Overall: pleasantly surprised by this flavorful porter from Florida.

Florida Beer Company "Gaspar's Porter"
12 oz. brown glass bottle, no apparent freshness date, coded "14160"
$1.50 @ Trader Joe's #766, Tampa, FL

So Gaspar's Porter is no longer an Ybor beer? OK. I can live with that. It's really just a beer to celebrate the Gasparilla Pirate Festival anyway. For those not in the know, "Gasparilla" was a 'supposed' pirate by the name of José Gaspar who may or may not have raided the gulf coast of Florida during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. I'll go with it, why not? Although I'll avoid all of the romanticized stories of him.

Being named for Gasparilla, this is an appropriately aggressive beer. It's black in color with a dark tan head. The head retention and lacing could be better, but it's OK. The aroma delivers caramel, chocolate, roasted nuts, and ashen roastiness - as well as a slight hint of alcohol. The flavor is very similar but adds some golden caramel, almost burnt sugar, a bit of dark fruitiness, and some black coffee. It has a sweet edge upfront but it also has an acidic dark malt edge, both of which are focused around a stiff bitterness that runs through the middle. It finishes dry and roasty with a lingering nuttiness and some dull, leafy hops.

Gaspar's Porter is one of the Florida Beer Company's best. It's rich and layered, with a kick, but still drinkable. Worth trying.

Good coffee, slight roast taste. Very dark but not too heavy.
Unfortunately, bartender advised it will be retired soon.

Appearance: Deep brown with no visible carbonation. Foamy, light brown head that dissipated, but left nice lacing.

Smell: Sweet notes of milk chocolate and vanilla yogurt. Some smokey notes including pork sausage and cigar ash and smoke.

Taste: Smoked malt flavor, with a dry, bitter finish including hoppy notes of grapefruit pith.

Mouthfeel: Mild carbonation with a moderately round mouthfeel.

Overall: This is a decent porter. The taste falls relatively flat, but I am intrigued by different notes on the nose that I find to be quite pleasant.

At first I thought it was okay but I had to drain it. I am not sure what it was maybe too much coffee.

Another offering from a local brewer that didn't disappoint - this time it's Gaspar's Porter.

This beer has an exquisite chocolaty, coffee, and hazelnut scent that I can breath in for hours. I'm a dark beer kinda guy and Florida Beer has this dark beer look down to an art - an almost black beer with dark tan head, though it has little staying power and little to no lacing. It starts off quite carbonated, but then it tamps down to a drinkable level, a smooth finish on the tongue. I wasn't overly impressed with it's taste as it had too much coffee (and I do like coffee) - to the point it overpowered the slight, mostly distant taste of hazelnut I felt was there. Overall, a decent brew, though not the best in their stable.
