I would definitely call this a Pale Ale and the label even ID's it as such. Part of a beer of the month collection. More hoppy than expected but the flavor combination is only ok. Will give it credit for pouring a very nice head that is still there after 5 minutes.

Golden yellow color, decent foamy white head. Smell was not real noticable, slight malt, some faint bitterness. Taste was a pleasant surprise. Nice crisp saaz snap to it, very tasty, slightly sweet malt finish. Others in the area complained of a slimy bitter aftertaste, I had none of that. Very crisp light to medium bodied beer. Easy to drink, and better than I expected.

Slightly hazy golden brown color with a half inch or so of snow white head, very well carbonated with thick, glass coating lace, fairly good head retention. Very sweet malty aroma with strong floral hops and honeysuckle notes. Taste begins with sweet malt, which give way to very pungent hops with a lingering bitterness. Mouthfeel is actually unpleasant, has a slick, oily feel, quite unlike any beer I have ever tried. I found this beer difficult to finish.

Pours a somewhat hazy deep golden color with a thin foamy head that fades into a trace amount of lace with a bubbly ring around the sides of the glass. Nose is quite faint with notes of sweet malts and floral hops. Very light in body with a slick mouthfeel at first that becomes almost slimy. Very unusual. Taste is sweet malts balanced with a mild hop bitterness. Probably not a beer I’d try again unless someone else was buying.

Pours a deep honey-gold in color. Fizzy, bubbly white head died quickly yet manages anice patchwork of lace on the glass. Aromas are yeasty/bannana. Flavor has some definite wheat-like character, along with bannanas, spices, and ground pepper. Finishes with a bready aftertaste. Mouthfeel is decent (a bit on the thin side) and drinkability is nice.

Thanks to AKSmokedPorter for this one.

Bought locally (Grapevine refrigerated shelves), a couple of days in my fridge, reviewed 45F-50F.

I poured heavy and was rewarded with a small head: white, dense. The beer itself is a slightly cloudy dark gold.

There's some strange sour malty smell to this beer. Some steel. The front is metallic, somewhat malty, heavy on the pepper. This gives way to a sweetish malty taste. The finish is the best part: dry hop-o-rama. Overall, I kind of like it. It's unusual, but not bad.

Received in early May as part of the MicroBeerClub April shipment.

Beer poured a golden orange with a nice initial head. Nose initially was perfumed with floral hops but has evolved to a semi-skunked nose. Taste initially had a refreshing bittering hop flavor but finishes semi-skunked. Mouthfeel is average, light to medium bodied with no special sensations for the palate. Overall drinkability is average. I am not sure if the skunkiness is a result of a bad batch. Nothing special about this beer.

Pours beautifully: crystal clear light amber. Moderate head with lasting power. Good lace.

The aroma is off and it is not appealing. The smell is something akin to a litter box--uric acid? In a word, stinky.

The flavor is a huge improvement to the smell until the swallow where the flavor becomes very astringent and there are some of the lingering negatives from the nose. Good hop presence. Nice body.

Nearly undrinkable. I wish I could identify specifically what is making this be so off.

Poured into a 12-oz mug, this beer is a nice clear amber color, with a small but steady head. Nose has a pleasant nuttiness to it--not to style but nice smelling, with some resinous hops. What an odd flavor! Sort of sweaty malt, sharp and tangy. Bitterness isn't bad but underlying it is an odd funkiness that isn't very pleasant.

Couldn't finish this beer.

It may be my Left Coast bias, but I haven't liked most of the few Florida ales I've tried. But this one really bottoms out. What's the dominant flavor? Nutmeg comes to mind. It isn't crisp and refreshing. It isn't a full-flavored malty brew. It's just some stuff with a big enough off flavor so that the best you can say for it is something like, "hey, this sure has a lot more flavor than a Bud."

If beers were generally like this, I wouldn't be a beer drinker.

Indian River Shoal Draft Pale Ale
Smells a little like sauerkraut (surprisingly) and sweet malt. Pours to an orange bronze with a little off white head. Taste is sweet and sour with a very tangy bitterness and a dry aftertaste. The sauerkraut is still there in the background, making this an ideal brew to wash down a brat. Mouthfeel is good, this beer gives a different flavor throughout all regions of the mouth. Very different hop flavor for a pale ale, not the classic cascade but more sour than bitter hop. Different.

Indian River Shoal Draft pours a yellow color with a white head from a brown twelve ounce bottle. It tastes like a very mild American Pale Ale, by that I mean it's flavor is primarily hoppy, but it's not a very strong or assertive hoppiness. Tasted on site at the brewery, this is being reintroduced and I believe the recipe was tweaked from the original go round.

A : Pours a clear amber with a white head

S : Toffee/caramel with a floral hop aroma. Not a strong smell

T : Some bready flavors along with caramel malt. A little bit of hop bitterness on the finish

M : Medium bodied, low carbonation

D : Not that great. I wouldn't have it again

A- light copper brew with a decent size head and decent retent to match, soapy lacing

S- citrus, tart burnt grain

T- citrus, grains, decent balance, toasted malts, hints of cardboard, fruity malts, and some caramel

M- a tad sticky with a dry finish and carbonation feel

D- decent, pretty run of the mill, but not a bad option

This was poured into a pint glass from the bottle.

A - clear light copper color with a decent head that settles somewhat quickly

S - light spicy hop aroma with some maltiness

T - strong hoppiness up-front that wanes somewhat throught the finish, some malt backing-perhaps not as much as expected

M - medium-light body with moderately high carbonation

D - decent enough beer, but probably not enough to keep me coming back for more

Monthly club selection for April. Clear amber color with soft thin white head.

Sweet toffee and cinnamon with a full citrusy floral hop aroma.

Sweet biscuity caramel malt with nice citrusy hops.

Medium bodied and smooth with a crisp finish.

Very drinkable APA - a good example of the style. Doesn't taste like a Kolsch to me.

Tasted on 5/12/08.

1 1/2 finger head with good retention. Nice clear orange color.

Faint pale and caramel malts mild citrusy hoppiness and a slight lemony grassy twang. The faintness of the smell makes it much less enticing.

Malts are sweet and sugary upfront and are followed by a coarse dry tannin flavor with a a dry bitterness from the hops. The tannins are a little off putting. Also there is a grassy flavor that s too strong and is a little off putting. This is made a little bit worse witht he citrusy twang. The citrusy and grassy flavors are jus a little too much and ruin the balance of the beer.

The mouthfeel is somewhat weak and lacks enough carbonation. Somewhat seltzery, but not overly bad.

This beer is ok, but has a few flaws that ruin it a little bit for me.

I don't find this beer as terrible as some of the other reviewers, it is indeed mild tasting but also fairly fresh and clean. Fairly average yes, but not terrible. Pours amber with a thin white head that sticks around as a thin ring. Aromas of bready malt and very light citrusy hops as well as a faint saltiness. Clean and pleasant taste of light maltiness, a bit of orange, and some very light floral and earthy notes on the finish as well as another hint of brine. Mouthfeel is smooth and maybe a tad slick. This is fine on a hot day, and much to be preferred to a BMC.

I poured this Average beer into my tumbler at 50 degrees. The beer was a nice amber gold color with a nice head at first. The pretty much disapeared into the tumbler. The smell bready and so was the taste. Not a bad beer but not a great beer. Just a beer. I willnot buy again mostly because.... I want something else.

Poured from 12-ounce bottle into a new SA pint glass:

A: Poured a bright copper-yellow color with a thin head of white carbonation which left little to no lacing.

S: Smells slightly buttery and astringent, with a distinct toasted grainy malt nose.

T: The body may be bubbly, but the taste is flat indeed. Sort of bitter metal taste left after the lightly toasted buttery biscuit flavor fades.

M: Mouthfeel is thin and fizzy.

D: A lawnmower beer, or something to offer a pal who doesn't like darker beers, or good beer in general.

I certainly wouldn't purchase this if I saw it in a store after having tried it. My dilemma is having two left in my space premium beer of the month delivery.

I enjoyed this beer from the comfort of my own home before and after a nice brat. From the micro of the month club bottle to a standard pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a golden amber color with a small off-white head that doesn't last long.

Smell: Sweet aroma with some citrus and pines.

Taste: Bitter hops and citrusy.

Mouthfeel: By far the best part about this beer. Smooth and crisp, light to medium-body.

Drinkability: Very easy to drink. Would be great for relaxing after taking care of the lawn, but would not be a session beer for me.

Pours a golden amber color with a short medium bodied tan colored head that fades at a decent pace and laces the glass nicely on the way down. It has a very sweet aroma of toasted malt, some citrisy flavor at the end of the nose. It has a much more bitter hoppy flavor than the nose let on. It tastes of nice toasted malts and some citrisy hoppy bitterness at the end of the taste. It has a smooth and sort of fresh mouthfeel which makes for a somewhat drinkable beer. I would classify this as more of a Pale Ale rather than a Kolsch. In fact it sasy Pale Ale on the bottle.

Looks like this used to be called Indian River and its deff not a Kolsch. Anyway...poured from bottle into pint glass. No head or lacing. Sweet citrus/orange aroma with slight hops, but more malty; but very mild aroma.
Taste is very mild as well. Orangey malts, sweet, and just a bit of hops with a slight bitter aftertaste. This is an ok brew. Nice for a summer day and I would say it would even be a nice "breakfast" brew since its so orange-like. A session beer for a hot day anyway. Its not fantastic, but its not horrible. Its an orange pale ale...in that respect its descent and points for being unique. Meh...
