Each batch of this light, fruity ale is made with 84 lbs. of raspberry puree. It has a brilliant pinkish tint and a hint of natural raspberry tartness. Introduced in the Spring of '94, it was so popular that we now brew it year 'round.

Served at McGuire's Pub in Pensacola.

Looks like, but rosier than, a red ale.

S - A strong raspberry aroma overpowers everything else.

M - light, watery body.

T - too much fruit? Despite being very fruity, it has a nice balance of tart and sweet, and the toasted grains not apparent in the aroma clearly influence the flavor.

Worked well as a dessert beer.

Pours a clear, copper color. 1/2 inch head of an off-white color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of raspberry, slight pale malt, and slight sweet malt. Fits the style of a Fruit / Vegetable beer. Mouth feel is sharp and clean, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of raspberry, pale malt, hint of sweet malt, and slight yeast. Overall, good appearance, simple, average aroma and body, and decent feel.

Arrives slightly foggy with no head. Odd for a wheat. Able to tease out a faint white ring evetyally.
Smell is very weak with just a hint of malt and bubblegum present and not willingly so.
Taste is malt, raspberry, light hops, a slight vinegary tartness and a hint of the aforementioned bubblegum. Balance is good.
Medium bodied, medium effervescence. Slightly tart and with a drying finish. A middling brew and not their best offering but not an overly sweet fruited wheat either.

Pours very easily, with little head. Looks very crisp in the glass.

Smell is almost overwhelmingly raspberry. It's definitely not hiding anywhere.

The smell carries over nicely to the taste. It's a little thin on the tongue, but it has a moderately crisp taste. The raspberry flavor is not artificial, as the brewers use real berries. The taste is about what you'd expect, given the smell. It's not a complex beer.

Not great, but a decent summer beer.

Consumed at brewery, 03/27/08.

Clear medium to light amber. Fine white head.

Artificial raspberry aroma.

Well carbonated, at least. On the palate, corny notes are drowned out by artificial raspberry syrup flavoring.

4.0 % ABV, the same as their light (aka Old Fashioned) ale. My guess is that they just put a trace of wheat and some syrup in that beer to make this one.

Skip it.

Highs: Good Raspberry flavor
Lows: Low range of appeal, overly thin

It’s interesting to follow EyeChartBrew’s review, as we both seem to have had similar experiences with this beer, though have drawn different conclusions. This is a favorite at McGuire’s brewpub in Pensacola, but I don’t like it much for various reasons. Like EyeChart, I tried first it as part of the 6-beer sampler. This is not a good way to review a beer, however, and upon drinking an entire pint, I realize why. The small serving is just not enough to do the beer justice, and in this case, I rushed to a hasty and misinformed judgement.

Pours from the tap a cranberry juice color with no bubbles apparent. No head either from improper pour or, more likely, that it just vanished before it got to my table. Nose is definitely sweet and fruity, almost perfume-like. Now straight to the taste—and guess what? Raspberries. If you like ‘em, they’re in there! If not, this is not your mug of beer, I’m afraid. There’s also evidence of some yeast and a little bready maltiness. Unfortunately, it seems overly thin and watery. Mouthfeel is surprisingly bubbly considering the fact that it pours crystal clear. The finish is malty/yeasty. Drinkability is pretty good in that it is light bodied, but for me, it’s a bit too watery and sweet. Menu lists 4% ABV.

Overall: Interesting, but not my favorite style. Within the fruit/vegetable beer style, however, this one is definitely worth a try.
