Served at Mcguires in Pensacola.

A - Unusually light color. Clear straw-colored liquid with white head.
Very good lacing.

Smells like a typical pal ale. Tastes like a hoppy pale ale. Very good flavor if a bit too balanced and lightly hopped.

Smooth but a bit watery feel with good carbonation.

Consumed at brewery, 03/27/08.

Clear golden hue. Thin foam skin.

Sweet, malty aroma with some grapefruit notes.

Surprise! Restrained hops on the nose, but the palate says wannabe West Coast IPA. Big, grapefruit hop flavor with some smooth, caramel malt in the background. Some bitterness on finish, but not overwhelming. Actually better balanced than some IPAs - this ain't your California cousin's hop juice. Well carbonated with tingle and bit of parching as well.

Quite enjoyable.

Lows: Just average

One of the nicer things about Pensacola is McGuire’s Irish Pub. I stop by every few months for lunch or dinner, and always sample their home brewed beer. Today I noticed they were advertising an IPA, or “Irish Pale Ale” as they called it. Menu lists ABV at 6.0%.

The pour from on tap didn’t yield much head, but that isn’t important in this style. The appearance was just so-so, however, a reddish-clear with no visible bubbles. Nose was as was expected, primarily hops, but not much to write home about. The taste was similarly underwhelming: some hops, a decent bitter, and maybe some citrus. Mouth is watery, surprisingly bubbly, and refreshing. Drinkability is about average; I couldn’t drink a whole lot of these. Finish is hops and light bitter.

My current IPA of choice, Dogfish Head 60 Minute, flat blows this one away.

Overall: A so-so IPA. There are plenty of better ones out there, but not on tap at McGuire’s.

Edited 5/11/07: This one has rotated around again. Not much has changed from last year, though I had no problem drinking 4 or 5 of these during my birthday celebration. A decent, though largely unremarkable IPA, methinks more in the style of an APA.

Pale clear copper color, foamy white head, aroma of citrus and a light scent of pine. Medium bodied ale, mild hop profile, balanced malt a little light on the hops, I like more. Not a bad IPA, not a great one either, agerage.
