Poured into a thistle, the appearance was a rugged mostly dark brown color with a full finger's worth of white foamy head. Mildly dissipated to leave some thin wispy lace.
The aroma had some earthy to peaty to grassy character up front with a playful dark bready/toast-like maltiness came in and around to mesh very well.
The flavor was moderately sweet through the prior mentioned aromas and carried a light hop spice to even things out slightly. Mostly a dark bready to peaty aftertaste.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied, maybe a touch under with a fantastic sessionability about it. Carbonation felt nice and low as expected and warranted. ABV felt appropriate.
Overall, pretty nice as a scotch ale and always welcome this time of year.

Peat, Bread, Warming, Creamy

This ale is all about nuances and subtleties. Very smooth and creamy with a chewy full body. Lovely malt sweetness of honey and faint caramel meets toasted bread and peated malt. Dried grass, clean alcohol, faint spice, & a kiss of hop bitterness in the middle. No real wow factor even with all of the nuances and subtleties though it does hit all of the bells and whistles for the style. Worth a shot to switch up your winter drinking.

Avoid. Brewed in Aug and past its prime. Off flavors and astringent notes. Did not age well or perhaps a bad bottle.

Deep golden brown color with a decent sized off white head that slowly dissipates. Rich caramel and toffee maltiness with hints of smoke, chocolate and dark dried fruit. The flavor is sweet with pruney maltiness offset with a bit of earth and smoke. Nice sipper.

Bottled back in Sept. 2014. Anxious to try this since Scotch Ales are a personal favorite style.

Poured from the 12 oz. bottle into a Samuel Adams nonick.

a: Clear copper with an inch plus thick offwhite head which receded to thick rocky surface foam and dense lacing.

s: Caramel malt.

t; Sweet caramel malt up front over a mild hop bite, followed by a dark peat note. Slightly sweet but mainly dry finish.

m: Medium to full, great body, moderate carbonation tingle.

o: A "meaty" and fairly flavorful Scotch ale. Would make a good dinner brew with a steak or lamb chops but also pretty nice as a cold weather beverage or evening sipper.

Now this is a blizzard beer, nice big scotch ale, bottled Sept 2014.

Pours a small fizzy head that fades pretty quickly too, mild lacing and some legs on the sides, looks more like a 9-10% beer than one less than 8%, crystal clear, obviously filtered, mahogany ruby cranberry deep red color.

Nose brings lots of sweet malts and candy, plenty of candy syrup and caramel, a little fruity aroma like apple brings a candied apple note, caramel malts, toasty reddish malts, big sweet syrupy with a little nutty note, and faint honey.

Taste brings more sweetness, lots of sweet syrupy things, some toffee this time, more caramel, candy syrup and plain syrupy sweetness, with more reddish toasty malts, candied malts, caramelized sugars, etc, that even brings some warming tingly booze. Mild nutty note again and a little honey, as well as the fruity esters bringing a mild apple like note again, apples dipped in honey and caramel. touch of a smoked malt in there, smoldering log like character. Finish is sticky and fairly sweet still, but it tries to dry and with it come the tingly booze, bit more nutty flavors with plenty more caramel and sweet syrupy flavors.

Mouth is med to fuller bod, mildly syrupy, some warming tingly booze (much more than it should for only 8%), decent carbonation with small bubbles.

Overall OK, but not great, pretty much just a sweet candy beer with lots of reddish copper malts thrown in, a hint of smoke and fruity apple notes, and honey which is nice, otherwise fairly boring.

Boston Beer Summit. Sample pour. Poured dark brown. Aroma is of thick caramel and toffee sweetness with a hint of peaty, smoky malt. Flavor is actually pretty tasty. I'm not overly partial to the style but I'm digging this one. Caramel and sweet, sugary bread. Some peat and earthiness. Finishes with a bit of dryness that keeps away any cloying elements. Fuller bodied. Enjoyable.
