Poured from a 12 oz can into a Dogfish Head tulip

L: Clear dark mahogany pour... reddish around the edges. 1.5 fingers of fluffy white head leave a nice ring of lacing.

S: Malty and sweet... toasted grains and dark sugars.

T/F: Follows the nose. Malt forward... modest sweetness balanced out with some hop bittering. Caramel and toffee. Brown sugar and earth. Relatively light bodied... smooth and a bit sticky.

O: A very nice representation of a Scottish Ale. Malty and tasty... light and drinkable. Solid work.

The clear mahogany colored beer pours out into a Duvel glass with a 1/2” tan head that soon recedes to a thin film on the liquid and a ring around the glass. Sipping creates some large scattered patches and legs of lacing, most of which cling to the sides of the glass.

The aromas include some dark caramel and toffee, a bit of brown sugar, some touches of green orchard fruit and just a bit of earthiness way in the background.

The flavors are much as expected from the nose with the sweetness from the dark caramel and toffee up front and backed up by the dark brown sugar and a bit of green orchard fruit. There’s also a bit of roasted malt that has a molasses like character. The bitterness remains way in the background and has both an earthy flavor and what seems like a bit of smoky character as well.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied and nicely smooth with the finely bubbled very light carbonation. The finish begins and at first mostly remains in the middle of the palate. The initial caramel/toffee sweetness begins to fade allowing the roasted bitterness to show a bit as it too begins to recede. The earthy hops are barely noticeable and there’s a bit of earthy, spicy smokiness lingering towards the back of the palate as the semi-dry finish slowly ends.

This beer is all about the malts, as a Scottish Ale should be, and it makes an excellent change of pace from hop dominated beers like IPAs. I’ve enjoyed trying this one. It is definitely easy to drink and I’d be happy to have it again.

Nice classic style Scottish Ale. Puts you in mind of Belhaven a bit. Medium brown color with a head that lasted around 10 minuets. Toffee and caramel aroma with a flavor that follows. Medium carbonation and appropriate for this style. Nice flavor all in all. I’d recommend it.

Light carbonation, sweet roasted malt, one of the best beers they make. Solid and consistent. If you don't like beer you'll like this, if you like beer you'll like this beer.

On tap

Pours a deep brown color with a creamy off white head, good retention. Smells of toasted bread crust, caramel, toffee and brown sugar. Nice toasted bready malt base gives way to sweet caramel, dark fruit and brown sugar. Medium body with moderate carbonation, foamy mouthfeel and finish. Very well made Scottish ale
