Style: Oatmeal Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Deep, rich and malty with hints of chocolate and coffee. It's what espresso would be if it had the gumption to be beer. We use two different hop additions, specially selected crystal malts, roasted barley and oatmeal to give it a soft and silky mouth feel. Makes a great dessert or meal.

Pours black with a thick, tan head. Aroma of oats, roasted malt, burnt wood, light hops, bitter chocolate, coffee and chocolate cake. This taste is right there - it's bitter from the coffee, sweet from the oats and chocolate and full of rich character from the malt. The hops add to the bitterness and keeps it firmly entrenched as a beer, not a dessert beer. The coffee also doesn't overwhelm. Mouthfeel is like hugging a velvet curtain. I know we're not here to talk about price, and price is very much dictated by location, but this bad boy was $9.99/6-pack at Wholefoods. That's including their standard markup. Unreal. What an incredible value for those lucky enough to get it. Awesome example of the style.

Appearance - dark brown liquid with tan head

Smell - roasted chocolate, roasted malts, oats, molasses, coffee grounds

Taste - chocolate, coffee grounds, oats, roasted malts,

Mouthfeel - Surprisingly full bodied, medium carbonation, chocolaty and roasty upfront, finish is long with flavors of chocolate, roasted malts and coffee along with a hint of ash. This beer is rich, luscious and smooth

Overall - this is an excellent beer, packed full of flavor and full bodied for the ABV - it should be considered the benchmark for the style as far as I'm concerned. Will always strive to have some of this in my fridge. highly recommended

Price Point - $8.99/6 pack 12 oz bottles

Poured into a Dogfish traditional oversized snifter. Bottleneck says Bottled On 10/07/2015.

A- Pours a 99% opaque black color with a 1/2 inch dark tan head that retains decently before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a random pattern of sheer surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves tiny specs behind.

S- Nice roasty malt character with some earthy hop presence plus some notes of dark bread, milk chocolate and coffee.

T- Nice hop/roast bitterness duality with just enough sweetness to balance. Very drinkable and the ABV is on the higher end of the spectrum for the style. Nutty aftertaste.

M- The oats lend a slight creaminess with medium carbonation and a fullish body.

O- A great example of the style.
