Dark is right. Very dark glowing brownish red color. Tan-cream colored head is 1.5 finger and leaves a nice little layer over the beer. Smells lightly sweet with chocolate, certainly malty, and pretty hoppy. Taste has similar qualities. Resinous pine, floral and citric hops blend with the sweet malts balancing the beer quite nicely. A nice conglomeration of all sorts of flavors here. Mouth is gritty and smooth. Easy drinkability too.

Another good Ipswich beer. Yummy + good to get whenever your little heart desires.

Ipswich Dark Ale presents itself very well from start to finish. It pours to a very large, long-lived creamy tan head on a hazy, ruby brown medium-bodied beer that leaves extensive, long-lived lacing on the glass. The nose is sweet caramel with hints of coffee; on the palate it transforms to a more bitter beast: bitter chocolate vies with black coffee and the heavily roasted notes that win in the end, dominating the finish with a very lingering bitterness. Prominent alcohol flavors help offset this bitterness somewhat, combining with a creamy texture and soft carbonation to make this a much smoother drinking beer than it would be otherwise. This is a very good choice if you want a strong, assertive dark ale with bitter notes that last.

Dark hearty color with a billowing head. Lots of malts on the nose with tea leaves, light chocolate malt, roasted nut, light grain and some dark fruit.

A touch more assertive flavor than the nose but for the most part very reflective. Tea leaves, chocolate malt, barley grain and even roast coffee.

Huge kudos for a great value.

A: Dark brown, thick tan head

S: Mild aromas of roasted malts and spices. Smells a little sweet.

T: The ale tastes watery, hoppy without body. It's definitely very thin and I was hoping for more.

M: Thin body. This has more carbonation than needed for a beer without a good malt backbone.

O: This is the first beer I tried from Ipswitch and I was not impressed. I don't think I would try this again.
