A - 4.0 - Medium amber, darker than other saisons I've seen. Loudly fizzy off white head that disspiates quickly but then keeps replenishing itself with lots of carbonation to maintain a solid cap for most of the glass.

S - 4.0 - Fruity but mutedly so. Faint funk. There's almost a fabric kind of thing going on as I sip slowly with my nose in the fresh head, inhaling.

T - 4.0 - Funk, refreshing, sharp nectarine initially that teeters on the edge of green apple later, that familiar Belgian candi taste, moderately tart.

M - 4.5 - Medium bodied, just a bit viscous, and pleasantly so. Contrasting that is tiny bit of a citric sting in the back of the throat after you swallow and a bit of carbonation zing on the tongue. Doesn't seem like it should be able to have the properties of thick and thin at the same time but it does. Very interesting. Finishes just at the edge of dry.

O - 4.25 - A very interesting and delicious beer. It's just tart enough to make you keep chasing it with another sip and another sip. But its body makes each of those sips substantial and satisfying. Really a well done beer. I consider it very good for the style and would rate it higher except other styles reach loftier heights.

A-

750ml into a tulip, the cork says 2009. As soon as the cage was loosened the cork rocketed away alarmingly. Pours a deep nearly clear orange amber garnet, orange tinged massive head recedes to a cap that lingers, ok lacing.

Aroma is a mosh pit of clanging scents. Sometimes a thing can smell somewhat unpleasant but you can't stop wanting to sniff, this is that. The dubbel and the saison are clearly present but it seems a forced pairing, the dubbel is slightly dominant. Nonetheless I keep returning it to my nose.

Strong dubbel initial flavor, light figs, caramel and date. Tart on the cusp of going sour. Very nicely dry, strong vinous notes. Deep grape cherry mineral aftertaste. Between thin and medium bodied creamy mouthfeel. Absolutely odd, if this was nearly dead still I would think BFM was the brewer. unique

patchy cream-colored froth. i can see through at some spots and others are nicely opaque (with time, a nice bird's-eye marblng effect appears). nice reddish amber color, but hazy

nicely tart aroma. tart cherries

excellent interplay between sweet and tart. the sweetness is generally light and fruity, although with some caramel and even a little of breadcrust. a touch of sherry and good hop flavor. nice spritz really delivered the nice funky sourness. a little alcohol heat there on the back end

Lovely color and a pretty off white head that faded rapidly. Nothing but a tiny ring remained less than a minute after a brisk pour. It appears still.

Lively aroma. Tart fruit and sweet malt. Not orange blossom but close. Less sweet and more fruity.

Taste is slightly boozy and mildly tart. Faintly earthy and very subtle hop bitterness on the back. Some sweetness of the malt comes through but sweet is not how I'd describe this beer at all. My daughter said it was quiet. I'd call it subtle.
I like it.

The carbonation I thought was missing hits you right up front. It's not quite campaign like but close.

Overall I'm happy with this beer and will likely buy another.

EDIT: This beer is decidedly NOT a dubbel. It's an American wild.

Shared this 750 ml bottle with my fiance, who loves this breweries bottle artwork.

Bright bronze and copper hue with hardly anyfoam after a quick snap of head after the pour. Good bubbling, but none of the foam I love to see in a saison.

The aroma was sweat, yeasty, fruity, with a little earthy, herbal hop aromas mixed in there. Very inviting aroma.

The taste starts with an intoxicating berry and yeast fruit flavor mixed with delicately toasted white bread. The middle drys and leaves a crackling juicey mouthfeel. The finish has a warm herbal berry flavor that makes this 8% saison deceptively easy to drink.

750mL bottle picked up last week in Orlando, brought back to OH to try along with Saison Athene.

First, some notes on style. The Saint Somewhere website calls this a Dubbel, the label states "Belgian style ale brewed with spices", and BA lists this as a saison. I'm not sure why there's so much discrepancy on beer from Saint Somewhere, I first encountered this while reviewing Lectio Divina. My own opinion is that this is a Belgian Pale Ale, and I guess my review is made against that broad style.

The beer pours somewhat dark, a deep copper color that is definitely lighter than a dubbel but darker than most saisons I've had. Unfiltered with a fine haze and a thick rocky solid-looking foam.

The aroma bothered me at first, in that I searched for and found a slight medicinal note (cough syrup). But upon longer exposure and warmer temperature I started to convert. This is a complex beverage aroma-wise, I suspect due to heavy sugars and yeast by-products as much as it is due to the spices noted on the label. It brings to mind patchouli incense, very floral and perfumy. Maybe there's some honey in this too, at least this smells like a small amount was used. Moreover, this smells authentically Belgian, I'm guessing the yeast strain is from Belgium and is similar (or the same) as used on Lectio Divina.

The beer tastes as complex as it smells, somewhat sweet upfront with lingering spices and yeasty breadiness in the aftertaste. As usual I find it too challenging to identify actual spices in the recipe, but in this case I'll say I don't think there's any coriander. In any case it's really tasty.

The body is on the thicker side, not quite syrupy but getting there. I think that with a little more time and exposure Saint Somewhere can approach Unibroue-like status, if they can keep the common thematic elements between their offerings.

A - Pours with two fingers of fluffy, off-white head that rests on top of an amber-brown body with good clarity. The foam settles slowly and leaves excellent lace. This is an unusually good looking beer, the color is exceptional and the clarity allows the intense carbonation to show through in the form of countless columns of tiny bubbles streaming upwards through the beer to replenish the tenacious half finger of foam that refuses to dissipate.

S - Spicy yeast aromas of pepper and clove with lots of fruit. Notes of pineapple, hibiscus and mango with some earthy brett in the background.

T - Bready malt up front with earthy spice notes of pepper and allspice as well as a bit of medicinal bitterness. Some dry, toasty caramel in the middle along with juicy, but dry floral/fruity notes. Finishes with dry toast and a slightly funky sourness as well as a surprising note of moderate bitterness. Lingering floral notes along with some pineapple/vanilla and slightly astringent pepper and clove.

M - Medium body, moderately high carbonation, and a very dry finish with a touch of astringency.

D - Well, it seems like I've been hearing rumors of this new St. Somewhere beer for about two years now and am quite happy to have finally gotten ahold of one. I rarely find myself moved by the appearance of a beer, for most it is just a pass/fail kind of thing, but this beer is one of those rarities that is truly beautiful. The clarity is perfect (although it got a bit cloudy on the second pour) and the head is big, rocky and tenacious, but what really sets is apart is the color; there is just something about this particular shade of amber that really does it for me. Moving on, the aroma is equally spectacular with all the requisite fruity Saison notes that St. Somewhere hits like few others. This is enhanced by a juicy floral quality as well as very nice note of brett that is strong enough to make and impact but not so powerful that it turns the beer into a true wild ale. The flavor echos the aroma, but is sadly not quite as engrossing. There is a good bit of malt in the beer, which is something I didn't really expect, and while this could help to balance out the sharpness of the spice and yeast, it mostly fails to do so because of the dryness. I have generally found that toasted malt character doesn't come across well in very dry beers and this is no exception. There is also an herbal bitterness that is present at the beginning of the flavor impression and in the finish and while it does manage a certain refreshing quality, it is has a somewhat unpleasant astringency that makes me assume that it comes from spicing at least as much as hops. Overall, this would seem to be a worthy addition to St. Somewhere's lineup. As with all of their beers, this one likely changes significantly with time and I believe that I caught it near, but not quite at, its best.

This one was cocked and loaded! When I opened it the cork almost went through my wall. After an exciting start the beer really didn't do much for me. The fireworks, head, and scents had me really expecting more than the beer delivered.

corked and caged 750ml bottle 2010 vintage

A- pours amber orange color with a 2 finger off white head a touch of lacing

S- was tart fruit with barnyard musty funk some sour apple with some sweet toffee

T- unique for a saison as i got some dark fruit tastes with some sweet toffee then some sour apple notes and musty funk

M- mine was nicely carbonated it had a tart and fruit sour mix with a dose of sweetness

O- another great brew from tarpon springs, these brews seem to age excellent thier taste is outsanding

Enjoyed this 750 bottle out of a pint glass.

A: Hazy copper hue with a fizzy, white, solid persistent lace with trail down the glass.

S: Strong sharp fruity aroma.

T: Fruity flavor with a slightly Belgian yeast taste. Dry grapefruit and finishes on the dry side of sweet.

M: Feels like a bubbly Champaign. Medium body and high carbonation

O: Excellent Belgian Ale – great flavors and aromas.

First off I have to say holy hell, this is the first time I have opened a bottle which seriously needed the cage around the cork. The second I finished untwisting the cage I the cork EXPLODED out of the bottle and shot 15 feet straight up smashing into the ceiling (thankfully not my eyeball)

A: Pours a muddy amber color with hints of yellow. Head literally fizzles like soda pop and disappears almost completely (like soda pop).

S: Ripe Date's and Fig along with Apricot brulée.

T: Wow this stuff is awesome! Another good saison from Saint Somewhere! Are these guys going to be the American Fantome? This is not nearly as sweet as the nose suggests... Dried Apricot and spice (earthy, Black pepper) emerge first. Darker fruits follow up along with a Brett spicy finish. Slightly tart and spicy this beer finishes pretty dry (lots of carbonation doesn't hurt!).

M: carbonic tang

O: Saint Somewhere lists this as this as their Dubbel but its as much a Dubble as Uncommon's siamese twin (ie its unique and hardly a Dubble). That said I think this is a fantastic beer with lots of complexity. Tastes far better than it looks.

Half way thru twisting of the cage this one blew taking the cork, cage, and a towel ceiling high, then gushing a quarter of the bottle out on to the countertop. Annoyance factor is high, but it looks great...

Huge foamy head settles to big clumps of meringue over a very hazy tawny colored liquid. Smell: faint acidic tartness, light tropical fruit, notes of clove, tobacco, and spice.

Taste: unfiltered apple juice, a little tropical fruit, tart but not super sour, the brett funk grows towards the end of the sip, but the fun is some nice dunkelweizen characteristics (caramel, bready, clove) in here too. This one is highly carbonated yet very chill on the tongue. A little tobacco in the burp (yep, still highly carbonated).

2010 bottling according to the cork (once it was recovered).

Poured from a 750ml cork and caged bottle into my De Dolle large tulip snifter glass. Pours an amber color with a slight reddish tinge. A huge frothy head emerges with semi-decent retention. Looks like this beer would leave loads of lacing, but unfortunatelt that's not the case. Leaves a frothy lace but slides quickly back down the sides of the glass.

Aroma is awesome! Tons of sweet fruits! Mild malts, big Belgian yeasts and candi sugars. Fruits are all over the map, from raisins to apples to cranberry. Booze isn't really a factor in the nose. Smells like a solid Belgian style dark ale.

Flavor is very decent. Lots of fruits again. Raisins and grapefruit believe it or not. Carbonation is very high, with a medium body. Flavors are slightly complex, the Belgian yeast really is noticable. This isn't bad at all, this was a random pickup from a local store.

Poured into a snifter. No freshness date...wait a minute. After removing the cage, the top of the cork says 2009. Hopefully they just had an overabundance of corks that year and still use them to this day.

A- Pours a medium brown color with more than two fingers worth of off-white head (from a slow pour) that retains a good while, yet surprisingly leaves little lace behind it.

S- Funky yeast smells that border on medicinal but bear enough sweet fruitiness to not indicate a full-on sour. Some alcohol fume.

T- A powerful glass taste at first that mellows out after a few sips to let in the rest of the flavors which include a restrained tartness, barnyard-type yeast and some faint malt tones. Also some cinnamon and clove spice.

M- High carbonation and a slight drying from the tartness.

O- A very easygoing sour that's not that sour. Seamless combination of flavors. One of my new favorite breweries.

Pours a mild amber/light burgundy color into my wine glass (don't ask me why I'm using a wine glass). Just a hint of head as well.

A tart aroma greets my nose as if it were an old friend that hadn't been seen in years. Aromas of hibiscus and saw palmetto greet the nose. On a more pedestrian level, think of a cross between cherry and grape.

Mildly tart with an emphasis on the ingredients used. Flowery, "earthy" taste that's just right. Very unique for the style. Hard to describe (in a good way!) but oh-so inviting. And again, definitely a "berry" taste (to simplify it).

Mouthfeel has a lingering, flowery, powdery malt feeling with just enough sourness to spark the taste buds.

This is certainly worth what I paid for it. It's a different take on a saison/farmhouse ale and it attempts to push the style envelope by incorporating ingredients that are non-typical (whole Hibiscus and saw palmetto berries).

I like it and I will definitely be buying other offerings from this brewery.

750mL cork & caged brown glass bottle. Cork says 2009.

Appearance: Pours a hazy beautiful orange-amber with some sudsy tan head that sits up nice and fluffy with big bubbles and leaves no spotting.

Nose: Some alcohol esters right off the bat, followed by some banana-orange smoothie notes. These quickly lead to milk chocolate ganache and something like rotting orange.

Palate: Bright and somewhat sharp with alcohol and carbonation. Reminds me immediately of Spanish Cava! Flavors too: green apple, toast, some smoke notes and peach/nectarine. But what's this? Some sourness creeps through, leaning oud bruin all of the sudden. Acidity level screams up once the alcohol and carbonation shock subsides. Like a Cava/oud bruin blend.

Notes: Love it. Didn't think I was going to based on the "Dubbel" category and the previous reviews. Glad I bought it. Like I said, somewhere between Cava (think champagne) and a sour brown ale. Highly recommend!

A- Pours a slight hazy amber brown color. Two finger off white head comes into play and stays for a short while. Clumpy ringing lacing on the sides of the glass.

S- Nice funky brett overtones in the front of this clash with yeasty clove and light pepper. Lots of fruits in the backing of the aroma. Some mango along with pineapple and tropical fruits. Light bready malts faintly in the nose.

T- Bready malts with some light yeasty and peppery notes. More toward the middle of the beer there is more of a caramel malt with some tropical fruits. Funky barnyard bretts bring a nice sour note to the entire beer. Very light floral hops in the very back end of this beer.

M- Medium mouthfeel. Carbonation is very good for the style. Drying on the palate with each sip. Some sourness left on the palate with some light alcohol and floral hops in the aftertaste. Nice puckering sourness throughout the entire sip.

D- A very very drinkable beer. I was excited about trying this beer and this one held up to what I wanted it to be like. I am excited to try this again when I can get a chance. This is a must try beer if you want something that has the perfect sourness to it.

Well done. Nice funky aroma on the initial sniff. Then followed by a sour and sweet fruity taste with a bubbly finish. Strong head retention with a light brown and very appealing color. I would buy this again.

L: It pours a dark, hazy amber crowned by a 1” cream colored head that hisses as it recedes.
S: Releases aromas of fruit, spice, wine, and mustiness.
T: Light malt is in the background to lemony tartness, fruit, spice and herbs. Some white wine notes.
F: Medium light body and highly carbonated.
O: A funky well crafted saison that is perfect for a hot summer day.

Pours a clear, deep copper, amber color with a huge light tan head. Head falls very slow. Nice lacing.

Big, spicy clean nose. Floral hops with plenty of spice and a bit of brett.

Taste mimics the aroma. Nice and spicy with a wonderful yet mild brett taste that us very delicious. Tart with a bit of a sour taste and drying on the tongue.

Medium bodied with mild carbonation and a slight bite.

Another awesome beer by Saint Somewhere. I love this little slice if Belgium in Florida. Well done.

Interesting label. A bunch of circa early 1900's women swimming in a lake with another lady dumping flower petals on them. The quality of the lable material tells me that the Saint Somewhere Brewing Company doesn't mess around. It's a thick and semi-glossy label. Poured into a white wine glass from a 750ml bottle.

A- Pours a deep reddish brown, like very old rusty water. A very thin fizzy head rose quickly but just as quickly vanished. Compare to pouring coca-cola very fast into a glass of ice. No lacing.

S- MMnnh MMMM. So many things to smell it's hard to pinpoint, but there was fresh baked bread, fresh flowers, dates, figs, a little spice. A little boozy, but I had to strain to focus on that aspect.

T- The carnival continues. It was like drinking a beer fruit smoothie. A bready and yeasty aftertaste. The beer is bottle conditioned, so you are taking in a good amount of yeast, which I actually enjoy. (save the dirty jokes)

M- Very well rounded I feel. This beer makes you want to hold each sip in your mouth a little bit longer than normal.

D- The ABV isn't crazy high (8%), so it's easy to enjoy the whole bottle while still having complete control of your mental faculties, which is a plus for this superb beer.

Pours carmelish red, kind of looks like apple cider, with a finger amount of head. Smells yeasty with a hint of apple. I taste yeast and apples and it's sweet, but not too sweet. The mouthfeel is touch thin and there's a nice dry finish, but not too dry. Drinkability, to me, is very good. I could drink this all night long, just wish I had could find it around where I live.

Cask at Aromas in Athens, GA.

Pours a hazy dark amber color with a large-bubbled, one-finger off-white head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells very good - mixed fruits, mostly berries, with a good deal of brett that doesn't seem as funky as others. I'm not 100% sure what a hibiscus smells like but perhaps it tempers some of the barnyard aromas.

Tastes similar to how it smells. A good amount of mixed fruit flavors up front are soon overtaken by a delicate tartness that has a good dose of earthiness. As the sip progresses an almost musty taste that isn't as off-putting as it sounds joins in before a crisp and somewhat tart ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a smooth thickness with soft yet prickly carbonation.

Drinkability is very good. I finished my glass and ended up having a few more samples.

Overall I thought this was a very interesting beer with just the right amount of tartness introduced. I'll be interested to try the bottle version once it's out to see how it compares.

On tap at the Avenue Pub in New Orleans, LA

A: Pours with a huge white head. Rings of sticky lace. A great bright and vibrant orange/red color.
S: Tartness up front in the nose. Funky yeast. Lots of fruits. Apples, pears, cherries. A big acidic twang as well. I love it.
T: Follows the nose with a tart , acidic twang, and funky yeast. Fruits explode with apples, pears, and cherries again. Again, I love it.
M/D: A medium body that is crisp and smooth at the same time. So easy to drink. A great beer to sip on during the hot summer.

Everything I enjoy in a Saison. A great funk, and lots of character. I think this is really well made. Something I would recommend.

2010 vintage, picked up in Chicago last month. With a vigorous cork pop, this then pours a slightly hazy, very effervescent bright gold color with a fluffy, airy head that fades pretty quickly. Very nice aroma: light and tart, with a very peppery, spicy undercurrent. The flavor, likewise, is solidly spicy. Malt plays a pretty minor role, and it is easily balanced by a vigorously grassy hoppiness. Coriander is certainly present, along with a medicinal, anise-like spice that is particularly distinctive and interesting. The finish is dry, tart, and tasty.

What a fantasticly interesting beer. I'm sorry it's not available here, because it would be a wonderful pairing with strong-tasting food, whether from south of the border or from southeast asia.
