Presentation: 17oz. brown bottle with "best before" notice atop label, but no date actually appended; $1.79 from the Wine House in West LA.
Appearance: Pours a slightly ruddy, light-to-medium brown with a fine, 1/8", off-white head; light-to-moderate ring lacing.
Smell: Caramel/chocolate malts; notes of dark, medicinal fruit (think cherry cough syrup).
Taste: Dark-cocoa backbone; lightly sweet and somewhat woody; traces of roasty bitterness and Robitussin swirl in the background. Medium-to-full mouthfeel.
Notes: Mustard doesn't dig cough syrup in his beer; there are better Munich lagers out there.

Presentation: Yet another 1 Pint 0,9 fl.oz. (500ml) tall, thin, slender Teutonic brown glass bottle. Standard Aktien-Brauerei label with dark brown and gold edges has the words Frundsberg Dunkel in brown text blue below a small picture of some Germanic buildings set in the countryside. No strength or freshness date.
Appearance: Dark brown body, deep chestnut with a tanned head that starts deep and relaxes to an ever present ½ deep creamy covering. This one looks very Germanic and the overall looks are very good, a gentle swirl reinstates the large head whilst frequent swirling will produce some neat looking patches of frothy lacing.
Nose: Dark chocolate, malts, oats and oven roasted chestnuts. Deeply inhaled it has a very good nose which does not disappoint.
Taste: Soft malts cut against a sharp dark chocolate. Nutty middle with a light bitterness in the finish. This Dunkel lingers, but only for a short while. As it warms it develops a wholegrain brown bread middle which adds to the overall feel and rewarding swallow on this one.
Mouthfeel: Has a creamy feel once you get down into it, this mixed with a feel of warm freshly baked bread that melts on the tongue all adds up to a Dunkel that drinks well and has a confident feel from start to finish.
Drinkability: Clean drinking, fresh looking and lively with a flavorful background. An easy 3.5 but it is way short of a 4.0. Nice enough; not one of those brews that I would go out of my way for, but Ill go for another bottle though.
Overall: Cant knock this one, the Weizen I had earlier in the week was a little disappointing, but the Frundsberg Dunkel was a very pleasant brew from Aktien-Brauerei. I knew that I had not tried this Aktien offering before when I recently spied and picked this up from Hollingshead Deli down in Orange. Now Ive had worse, but I am finding it hard to believe that this has only been reviewed on three previous occasions given its very reasonable stance.

Presented in a 500ml bottle I picked up from Hollingshead Deli. I used a mug and was rewarded with a dark brown brew topped off with a 1" thick light beige head that stuck around for a couple minutes. Moderate lace clung to the glass.
The nose had a hefty caramel malt aroma along with notes of chocolate and fruits. The was a slight amount of faintly herbal hops scent but I really had to focus to get to it so it's easily overshadowed.
The taste had the flavor of hearty dark German bread. Lots of caramel flavor set up camp on my tongue and refused to be evicted. The faint herbal hops I picked up in the nose didn't translate into the taste; instead I got the light dusting of medicinal fruits. Finished with the continued dominance of the malt profile which negated any hops character. The feel was pretty average; light and a tad thin.
Overall, not a bad dunkel. Nothing to jump up and down about but decent nonetheless.

Wow, this beer has only been reviewed once before? I found a great little German deli/grocery/beer store recently, and picked up a selection of German beers I had never heard of. This was one of many.
Pours a medium brown with a decent sized bubbly off-white head. Appearance is kind of thin and watery looking .
Initial aroma is sweet milk cream- chocolate milk? Malt profile is of dark breads, minimal yeast or hops to be found. Is there a small hint of soap (it's possible that's the glass, so I didn't include that in the score)?
Flavor is malty, whole grain or dark bread (good, German black bread), perhaps a touch nutty and slightly sweet roasty chocolate. The back end has a touch of hops that reminds you that they use them.
Mouthfeel is a little thin, like the appearance. Drinkability is pretty good, not begging me to have some more, but easily drinkable. Decent enough, not bad, but doesn't grab and make me shoult out for more.
