Big half-liter bottle, served in a weizen glass; it pours a ruddy amber/brown, with medium carbonation and a finger of fizzy, short-lived, khaki head. The bouquet is quite tropical for a wheat beer (orange, pineapple, apple, banana), with a nice spicy yeastiness and hints of clove. The flavor builds on this by adding some tart/tangy wheat, papaya, chocolate?, and grassy, leafy/green hops on top of a light/medium body that has a similar finish, and imparts a tingly effervescence. Overall a yeasty, phenolic, and tropical wheat beer that is unique and tasty - of the five Kaufbeuren beers I've sampled, St. Blasius is easily the best.

Appearance – This is a light brown in color with some yellowish hues and a modest head.

Smell – The malts in here are light and cheaply toasted. I can kind of get some yeast going but it’s a chore.

Taste – The yeast comes out more at the taste but it’s still lacking. There’s some banana in there but it tastes cheap, like the banana flavoring of a lollipop. The malts offer little structure to the flavor profile.

Mouthfeel – This is a far cry from even medium-bodied but had some live, pleasing carbonation.

Drinkability – I enjoyed the way this one felt in the mouth, which is an accomplishment in and of itself, but the rest of it left me wanting. I wouldn’t buy again.

A - Giant clods of yeast chunk float around this deep rhubarb hued brew like turds in the bowl. This beer is cloudy, and seriously chunky! The color is a very deep strawberry/rhubarb shade of ruddy brownish red. The head is minimal and flimsy, and dissipates in seconds. Absolutely no lace is left on my glass. This is one odd lookin' brew!

S - Strawberry candy....the kind that comes in a strawberry wrapper complete with the green top. Deep yeast notes and some clove honey and pancake syrup round out the nose.

T - The flavors here are honey laden clover, sweet dates, taffy, and some sort of fruity candy. I keep thinking of strawberries....not fresh ones, but artificial sweet strawberry syrup. The sweetness is not over the top, even though it is the star of the show, and the alcohol helps keep it in check.

M - Medium bodied with lively carbonation and an off-dry yeasty finish. This just feels hearty and muscular, but not big and flabby. It's like one of those little Olympic gymnast girls....strong and powerful, but agile and spry.

D - Good beer! I like the style because it's so heavy hitting and "dark" (as the beer-ignorant like to categorize beer), but it's also very quenching and refreshing. An excellent "winter sports" beer for sledding, skiing, and hiking in the colder months.

Decent appearance. Cloudy chestnut-orange body. Short cap of creamy white froth. Effervescent tiny bubbles can be seen rising along the side of the glass. Head retention is OK. Lacing is minimal.

Nose is malty, nutty and caramelish. Some fruitiness... apple, soft berries, green banana, plum. Whole colve.

The flavor delivers: wheat, caramelish wheat-malt, fruit (as above), a touch of toffee, more wheat, mildly peppery spice... more of a clovey spice, and a delicate snap of alcohol. Mild bitterness. Some melon-like fruit appears in the finish, and it simply dwindles down, lingering with all of the flavors that it offered upfront, and then slowly dissolving to a yeasty-tart/acidic end. A touch chalky as well.

Overall, it's a decent weizenbock, but there are better - not that it's not brewed well, because it is, but just because some others have achieved a higher level of balance. Still, it's worth trying.

As a part of my ongoing quest to sample every wheat beer I can get my hands on, St. Blasius captured my attention. It's certainly worthy of yours, as well.

Appearance: St. Blasius Weizenbock pours a fairly nondescript opaque amber/mahogany, consistent with most examples of the style. Exposure to direct light invites comparisons with your average dunkelweizen. Unlike most weizenbocks, however, this one yields a solid three-finger, khaki head -- albeit one that fades within about a minute. No lacing or cap is evident during drinking.

Smell: Also fairly middle-of-the-road for the style, St. Blasius smells sweet and wheaty. In this case, wheaty "twang" and brown-sugar sweetness are well-integrated with one another, and I like it a lot. To tell you the truth, I don't smell anything beyond that.

Taste: While not particularly aggressive or characterful, St. Blasius features the most agreeable parts of the flavors of most weizenbocks, without their more challenging accoutrements. I don't get a lot of tangy wheat sourness, which is a good thing, in my view. What I taste is an opening fusillade of fermented wheat, supported by a backbone of lightly toasted malt, bread crust, and yeasty wholesomeness. There are hints of dried fruits, but they're rather distant. This beer is drier than many weizenbocks, with a lingering echo of wheat.

Mouthfeel: Pretty good. St. Blasius is heavier and thicker in the mouth than most wheat beers, but nowhere close to the creamy smoothness of Aventinus. Carbonation is ample and appropriate, elevating the flavors and sustaining the aroma as the glass warms. Good, bordering on great.

Drinkability: If the ABV was a bit lower, this would be up there with the best of them (Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier, Hacker-Pschorr, etc.). As it stands, St. Blasius Weizenbock is as drinkable as any weizenbock not brewed by Schneider und Sohn. Refreshing, hearty, and warming -- a great cold-weather brew.

On the whole, I strongly recommend this beer to any wheat beer aficionado. If you're not familiar with the style, start with a Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier Dunkel, work your way up to Schneider Aventinus, and then give this one a try.

Poured a nice clear, dark gold into my glass with a one inch white head that fizzed out rather quickly. Fruit in the nose. Apple juice like flavor. Medium body. Very drinkable. I've only recently begun to explore the many styles of German beer and this one is a pretty good example its style.

I found these 500ml brown bottles at Sal's Liquors in Addison, IL for the reasonable price of $2.89 a bottle.

The beer poured a cloudy chestnut brown color with a full 4 finger's worth of off-white head. The head subsided in about a minute and lacing was decent.

Nice pumpernickel bread smell along with some caramel and an apple-ish smell.

Sweet caramel malt and roasted malt flavor with the addition of some tart apple flavor which gives it a funky twist. Yeast is also present giving it some bready flavor. Different, but I liked it.

Smooth, medium bodied, but a bit undercarbonated.

Not your typical weizenbock with the addition of the tart apple flavor, but tasty nonetheless, and the alcohol is well masked considering the 7.2% listing.

Having never seen this before (Hollingshead's does indeed have quite a few German brews), I picked it up. I like the style, but have only had a few that were truly memorable.

This pours a slightly hazy semi-dark amber color with a 1 finger incredibly fizzy head that quickly dies. Smells of sweet wheat - well, wheat soaked in artificial fruit flavorings. It actually smells better than the description makes it sound.

Taste also veers toward the sweeter side, with a nice touch of wheat in the background. Sweetness has just a slight bit of artificial quality to it (similar to the smell) - sort of sweet apple juice. It's alright - nothing special.

Mouthfeel is well carbonated - a bit much for my taste - and drinkability is good.

Overall, this is an ok beer that I can't really see myself coming back to.

Thanks to egajdzis for sharing this. Weizenbock is my favorite style...
Appears a hazy, light orange toned brown with a small, off-white head that quickly fades out into a mild cap.
Smell is of citrusy dough, caramel, vanilla, a touch of bananas, and mild spices.
Taste if of the mentioned aromas but more tart with a light apple note that isn't unheard of for the style. It's not bad but it is a bit sweet.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, crisp, fruity, with a smooth finish.

A - Cloudy deep orange amber with copper highlights.
S - Slight banana, cirtus, apricots.
T - Creamy orange zest, more apricots and pears, nice biscuity sweet malt with wheat backbone.
M - fresh, clean,, effervescent mouthfeel but ends up just a tad cloying in the finish.
D - Very smooth, not nearly as complicated and intense as Aventinus. This could be a Weizenbock session beer if there is such a thing. Nice without being too sweet or overbearing

Poured from the bottle into a weizen glass, the beer appears a dank light brown color. Some orangish-yellowish tint at the base. Lots of carbonation. A decent two-finger head forms after pouring but quickly dies down, leaving a thin layer of foam coating over the whole beer. Not much lace to speak of. The aroma is a sparkling and fruity. I detect strong notes of peach, with some banana, apple and pear. A buttery crust sensation is there as well. A wonderful aroma overall; I could smell this all day long. The taste is equally as pleasant. Smooth maltiness mixes well with the fruity overtones. There is some piney alcohol in the finish, but it serves more as a clean finish than a detractor. Mouthfeel is chewy, but not syrupy. Very solid. I could easily make this a session beer. The 7.2% ABV is masked well - perhaps too well - and I could very easily find myself downing three or four of these in a setting, given the chance. What a nice beer.

A: The pour is amber in color with a surprisingly effervescence and a bit white head.

S: Sweet malt and bread giving some caramel and toffee to the beer. Unfortunately, it's a touch cidery, but there are some sweet banana esters and a little bit of spice.

T: Far fruitier than I've ever come across in a weizenbock. Like the nose, there is a definite cider component to the flavor. Some good toast, caramel, and bread, however. Banana and clove do give it that typical German flavor.

M: Medium in body with a rather high level of carbonation.

O: The good flavor components were good, but the off flavors were just a bit too off.

The beer pours a copper amber color with good head retention and lacing. The nose is sweet and malty, and I can't say this really comes across as a German weizenbock (more like a marzen or maibock). Nevertheless, it's still pretty attractive, with some nice baked apple and light cherry. The flavor profile replicates the nose, though thankfully this beer isn't too sweet. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a fairly long, malty finish. The alcohol is very well integrated into the flavor profile, and frankly I was surprised to see the 7.2% abv.

While nothing extraordinary, this is yet another very nice effort from the folks at Aktien-brauerei.

The weakest weizenbock i've ever had. It wasn't bad, it just didn't pack a punch at all. Cloudy amber in color, head foams up quickly even with a correct pour, then fades to about a half inch where it stays throughout. This beer does adhere to the Reinheitsgebot law of German beer. This is a good weizenbock for someone who is looking for an easy drinking bock that would pair well with most meals. Phenolic characteristics fade as the beer stays in the glass. I paid2.79 at Hollingshead.

Another Aktien beer I grabbed at State Line a few weeks back.

Brilliantly clear (until I add the yeast), this beer has the color of burnished copper and is capped with a dense, off-white head that recedes to a disk. Plenty of carbonation is visible

A little sweeter than I like my weizenbocks, this beer is bready, sweet and has plenty of banana with some clove. The bread character is great, this really smells like rising bread with some caramel and honey.

The palate opens yeasty and estery with a some banana and a fruit bread like character. The palate isn't as sweet as the nose would let on, and that's for the better. Caramel and brown sugar sweetness appear mid-palate, along with a touch of clove. I also get a little burnt sugar, and that's a great touch. Sweet, bready and mildly yeasty on the finish with the alcohol cutting through the sweetness just enough, this feels quite great on the palate. The high level of carbonation is a little distracting, especially coupled with the medium body. The finish also has a little phenolic character, which I appreciate. All told, a VERY enjoyable weizenbock, one that I will drink again without a doubt.

Presentation: Half-litre brown glass bottle. Red, yellow, black and white crown cap with the Aktienbraurerei Kaufbeuren logo on it. Main label has a picture of (I assume) St. Blasius seemingly sharing a brew with a Mountain Goat. I’m not sure what this has to do with the legend of the Bishop of Sebaste in Armenia who was martyred in the 300s AD and was said to have saved the life of a child choking over a fish-bone. The reverse label has a nicked Best Before Date of 15-01-06 and a stated strength of alc. 7,2% vol.

Appearance: Rustic orange copper body with a lightly fused haze. Fizzling vanilla head pops and farts to leave only a thin bubbled head after a short time. Medium conditioning levels and spotted lacing. Basic looks.

Nose: Dark wheat laden nose with a toffee aspect to it. Not much else, rather simplistic.

Taste: Starts with toffee malts which have a chewy sweetness. Limited banana feel but it is feint, some marmalade and toasted malts. No sign of the alcohol anywhere. I was a little disappointed with one, it lacked balls and definition.

Mouthfeel: Soft chewy feel with a medium feel to the body. Nice support from the conditioning but it isn’t that great after time in the glass though, it soon becomes flat and insipid.

Drinkability: Hard to get too excited about this one. Not much to detract from it, yet there again at the same time not much to get me excited either. This is average when freshly poured, but it starts to lack appeal after some resting time in the glass.

Overall: Not that bad but a little boring in the long run.

Poured from 16.9 oz bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: every so slightly clouded orange-tinged gold with a thick off-white head which dissipated quickly leaving little lace.

Smell: very fruity malt aroma. This smells a lot more like a cider than a beer. There's a also a spice character to it which actually makes it smell a lot more like apple pie than anything else. Fortunately, I like apple pie.

Taste: very interesting flavor; it is quite fruity with a lot more taste of raisin and pear and plum than apple; with patience I can taste a little wheat, but it's buried. There is practically no hop character though there is a little bitterness to confirm the fact that I'm drinking beer and not a fruit product. Very interesting.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied; pretty good.

Drinkability: I like it well enough, though it's not exactly my cup of tea. I look forward to revisiting this beer after I have a little more experience with the Weizenbock genre.

Poured a murky, medium-brown color with a pillow-like, white-colored head. The head was rather frothy with a soap-like consistency. Low-carbonation and quite cloudy at a glance. Aromas of honey, fruit, and grains. Very bread-like smell. The taste followed suit with a strong grain flavor followed by fruity undertones. Slightly chewy in my mouth. Overall, this was a flavorful beer and quite easy to sip. I certainly wouldn't mind another.

Murky brown color, implies dark but isn't opaque at all. Big tan head plops up several fingers and sticks pretty well before noisily receding, leaving no lacing on the glass. Lots of sediment before I swirled and poured the rest; plenty of chunks from bottom to top.

Dark fruit on the nose, even some apple in there, German yeast, very estery, and caramel and crystal malt sweetness. Definitely spicy; maybe some nutmeg, and cloves. Kind of a grape juice tang.

Wheaty creaminess, toffee malt, slight amount of caramel...big malt bill, offering up some of the same spices from the nose: clove predominantly. Touch of peppery alcohol, finish is chalky and lightly acidic, leaving it a bit dry.

Decent chewiness, quite smooth, if just a bit effervescent. Not at the top of its class, but a quality brew. I attributed a lot of flavor characteristics to it, but it's really fairly unbalanced, and lacks the pop and depth of larger-bodied weizenbocks that I consider world class.

Certainly well brewed and nice if you're craving the taste (I am!)..if you come across it don't be afraid of it not being a top 100 beer. This is one of a limited number of weizenbocks that I've come across (only one of the top five most reviewed w.bocks is a full time offering: Aventinus) and it matches note for note, just lacks that special something.

While I wait for the few trick-or-treaters to beg for candy at my door, I have this beer sitting at my side:

I couldn't tell if this was a weizenbock or apple cider. It looks like a dark unfiltered wheat beer, but it leaned heavily towards the sweet side. Sweet like, well, apple cider. A little bit of clove danced around in the background. Yet the taste wasn't bad at all and it had a pretty good drinkability for its strength. I guess I was expecting something that would WOW me.

a heady beer with a real strong malty flavour. a little rough and ready with an almost applejuice nose however what saves this beer from being hard to drink is the great finish that pulls everything together. Not my favourite and maybe worth putting down in the cellar to smooth it out.

Poured from a freshly-opened 500ml bottle, served at La Bodega, Portland, OR. Poured to a snifter, about 6 oz. worth.

A: Clear light amber, filtered. Some hints of brighter, richer orange. Minimal head and wispy lace.

S: Big wheaty aroma, sweet caramel malt, yeast and sugar. Brewed by Aktien as a "holiday" beer, so there are some faint strains of herbal spices and nutmeg/cinnamon.

T: Grainy and mildly sweet, a malty beer with just enough in hops department to round off the flavor. Lagering yeasts are subdued and some spices creep in toward the finish.

M: A little thin in the mouth, but generally a crisp, refreshing 'springy' beer. Body is light to medium, carbonation is light.

D: Not spectacular but easily drinkable. Lighter consistency but still pretty potent in alcohol. Therefore, maybe not one you could have more than one or two of. Good flavors and aroma - one I'd probably have again.

Pours a dark yellowish-brown/ brown copper color with a foamy off-white head. Musky aroma that is dominated by clove spiciness. Slight chocolate malt presence. Flavor is once again dominated by cloves. A little bit of licorice, chocolate malt. Very carbonated with a spicy roastiness up front followed by a sweet malty center and dry finish.
