I must have gotten ahold of a bad batch. This poured absolutely flat and syrupy. It had no nose whatsoever--very weird. No head. There was a slight root beer taste, but I wasn't interested enough to finish it.

A: Pours a clear deep amber in color with light amounts of active visible carbonation rising from the bottom of the glass and faint copper highlights. The beer has a two finger tall foamy beige head that reduces to a medium thick film covering the entire surface of the beer. Minimal amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light to moderate aromas of biscuit and caramel malts with a hint of Belgian yeast spiciness and light grassy hop aromas.

T: Upfront there is a moderate flavor of biscuit and caramel malts with a light amount of sweetness. That is followed by a light flavor of dark fruit (prune) and Belgian yeast spiciness. Finally, there is a light flavor of grassy hops in the finish which gives a light amount of bitterness that does not linger.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation.

O: An interesting combination of an American Amber Ale and a Belgian Dark Ale... Nice complexity in the flavors but a touch too sweet for my palate. Definitely worth trying but not sure that I would get it again.

Meh imitation Belgian. Claims Florida origins, but outsourced from South Carolina. Palatable but uninspiring. Do not waste your time.

Not very good.... Kind of skunky and not very much fun to drink. Cool label though.

12oz bottle poured into shaker pint. Crystal clear copper in color with a foamy white two-finger head that recedes to a thin cap. Aroma is of fruity yeast, caramel malt, bread, and grass. The taste is sweet with caramel, bread, apple, and biscuit. Only a slight bitter grass note comes through in the swallow. Medium-light body, thin texture, above average active carbonation, sweet finish.

Terrible. Do not drink this "craft" beer. You and your wallet be better suited drinking Bud Light .

Delicious beer. Nice hoppy flavor without the bitterness of an IPA. A nice cross-over between styles (between an Ale and an IPA).

Inlet Brewing "Monk In The Trunk"
12 oz. brown glass bottle, coded "MOFL-290BE"
$1.67 @ Trader Joe's #766, Tampa, FL

I was so intrigued by this brewery because they only make two beers, only to learn that it's contract brewed by Thomas Creek in NC, which makes more sense; and if they've got a client like Trader Joe's they're pretty much set.

The second thing I found interesting was that it was an organic amber ale. Organic is great, especially when it only costs $1.67 per bottle, but who buys "amber" ales anymore? Alas, it's a Belgian-style "amber" ale!

Its clear deep copper colored body is topped by a short head of off-white foam that unfortunately drops rather quickly and leaves only minimal lacing behind. The aroma expresses a combination of fruits including apricot and fig along with some clove. All of those components return in the flavor along with more fruit (plum/prune, black cherry), a touch more spiciness, some grassy hops, and a caramelish, gently sweet malt. It's moderately bitter but balanced with the spiciness from the yeast lending a hand. It finishes drying with a drop of residual malt and swirling notes of leaves, grass, clove and 'spice'.

Not great. I feel duped by this beer. Apparently it's local but it's brewed elsewhere.
