Poured out a 12 oz bottle into an widemout mason jar. Pours a very dark copper, clarity comes through when held up to the light. Nice head with a beige color that leaves a nice lacing on the sides of the glass. The smell is pleasantly malty, sweet and roasty. Taste is rich and roasty, hints of roasted nuts balanced by a mild bitterness. This beer hints and the thick and heavy stouts but plays lightly on the tongue. The maltiness of the front end is cleaned up nicely by the crisp back end. I never know what to expect from a porter, some seem like light stouts and others like brown ales. This one definitely drinks like a crisp brown. I tend towards the heavier when drinking dark beers but this is a very pleasantly crisp beer.

Aroma notes of coffee, although I don’t taste it. Malty, carbonated, and a bit dry. Bit of a chocolate aftertaste. Good representation of the porter style. All of Eel River’s beers are USDA Certified Organic, and they claim to be the 1st brewery in the US of this distinction.

Comes in a relatively thin brown color and an even more thin head 1/5", lighter brown in color and small bubbled in texture. Usual suspects of chocolate and coffee from the malt roasting. Roast more than coffee and chocolate perceptible.

Taste hits those usual notes and a small amount of licorice/dark fruit bitterness. Has a red wine edge to it. Could use more two row, thicken this guy up. Hops discernable, cascade probably. Call this an equal parts blend between porter and imperial brown ale.

Listed on the "1001", but to me it was no big deal.

From the 12 oz bottle in a snifter. This nice porter pours a medium dark mahogany with a modest head of off white foam that settles to a thin ring and spotty lacing. Nose of dark sweet cocoa, coffee notes galore, and subtle dark sugars with some light fruit notes. Flavors follow the nose with cocoa and cream laden coffee on the front and middle, dark roasted malts hit nicely on the sides, and blend in on the rear with some light banana notes from the yeast which is a pleasant surprise that mixes nicely with a touch of cream. Very nice mouth feel, medium high carbonation is lively and crisp cutting through the dark libation making it highly quaff-able with a lightly bitter malt finish and a touch of herbal hops. Overall an excellent brew that exceeds most of the organic brews out there.

Cheers

My favorite beer. My wife and I even made a 3 hour road trip to their brewery just so I could fill my growler.

Poured a gorgeous black with reddish brown highlights and one finger of bubbly tan head. Overall impression of appearance is of a classic porter, well done. Scents of iron, hard water, caramel, light roasted malt, light fruity esters, moderate notes of dark chocolate and coffee with cream. Overall impression of aroma is of a nice brown Porter, a bit sweeter than a standard Porter. Quite nice. Flavor begins modestly sweet with notes of caramel blending with notes of roasted malt, nutty malt and coffee with cream. Middle opens up notes of toffee and more abundant roasted malt. Finish is looking gently dry with notes of caramel mingling with toffee, nutty malt, roast malt and dark chocolate. Aftertaste is roast malt. Overall impression of flavor is of a true to style brown Porter, more sweet malt balancing roast than in a standard Porter, not bad. Mouthfeel is light bodied with high carbonation and a chalky feel. Overall impression of mouthfeel is of a nice Porter, quite good. Overall this is a fine Porter. It hits the style for a brown Porter nicely and is quite pleasant to drink. Nicely sessionable, quite flavorful and wonderfully aromatic. Well worth trying.

This is a pretty darn good porter.

Dark black/brown color, usual tan head.

The smell is the only thing that isn't good about this beer: stale, stinky, unwholesome. Just not good.

Taste is mild, wholesome, malty, not oversweet, hints of bitterness.

Mouthfeel is fine. Just like a porter should be.

Overall I like this porter, I'd drink it again. I wouldn't serve it to people who have a keen sense of smell, because yuck. But once you get past that, this is a nice, sessionable porter.

Very nice american porter, looks, smells and tastes according to style, easy to drink and enjoyable. Organic characteristic of this beer makes it very expensive in Mexico.
