I picked up a bomber of Eel River Brewing's 2017 Earth Thirst DIPA from Hi Times in Newport Beach, CA on 05/15/2017. This DIPA is brewed with certified organic X17 and other Northwestern hops. No "bottled on" or "brewed by" date. 8.2% ABV. Eel River Brewery hails from Scotia/Fortuna, California, just south of Eureka.

Earth Thirst pours a clear amber with excellent carbonation. 3 fingers of ecru foam with nice lacing. The pour becomes increasingly cloudy towards the bottom of the bomber. The smell is citrus, pine, stone fruits and floral. The taste is essentially the same -- citrus, pine, stone fruits and floral supported by a moderate malt backbone. The alcohol is well-hidden.

Earth Thirst lacks the hop forwardness and bitterness that one expects from a DIPA. Earth Thirst is smooth but far too boring and mediocre for my taste. I honestly expected much more here from Eel River Brewing. Earth Thirst definitely isn't remotely on par with the celebrated DIPAs from the Russian River Brewery, located just 3 hours drive south in Santa Rosa, CA.

Pours a murky pale-medium amber producing 3 fingers of frothy, loose, beige, lasting, settling to a finely bubbled foam head that leaves a sheet-like coating of lace. Aroma malty sweetness, citrus hops especially orange & tangerine, cedar wood, honey & apple juice. Taste is sweet malty caramel a citrusy mix of orange, tangerine & grapefruit, cedar wood, some pine resin, pepper & spice. Finishes acidic & peppery with a hoppy bitterness that builds but is joined by a shortlived sweetness in the aftertaste. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium-high carbonation, intense pepper bite becoming slick & wet in the mouth but drying after the swallow.

Orange pour, substantial malt here, 1 inch of head. Looks pretty even if it didn't produce the most substantial retention qualities. Aroma was devoid of hops. Utter failure in that regard.

Taste drops lots of bitterness and not much else. Just not even approaching an average dipa. Bad format too. Avoid.

From a bomber to a tulip cause I get fancy with nice IPAs. Light, clear, gold color with generous white head that doesnt linger to long. Smells like tropical fruit grown in a pine forest. Taste is the same with floral hop notes and a dank, piney finish with slight lingering floral bitterness without any cloying sweetness. Mouthfeel is very smooth with a pop of hop tangy-ness. Overall a well rounded/balanced DIPA, by my standards, that stands up well to others on the market.
The lack of a date on the bottle is a bit irksome and it did taste better fresh released off the tap bu t then again what IPA isnt?
Very solid nonetheless!

Pours gold with a large white head.
Nose shows sweet malt, piny and resinous hops, peach and apricot.
Similar flavours with a big clean malt presence, massive piny and spicy hops along with softer fruit hops.

22oz bomber. First go from Eel River.

Smell is rather subdued, the hops come through light, with some pine and grapefruit notes. Nothing too flashy here.

Taste is also subdued, the hops in this dipa are very toned down, and the earthy maltiness comes through the stronger. Bitter pine and grapefruit are most present, very slight citrus but the malt backbone in this mellows the hop bitterness and makes for an unbalanced feel in the mouth.

Wouldn't go out of my way for this dipa, but I'll be trying more from this brewery.
