Pours a cloudy golden, orange hue with minimal head and lacing. The smell is fantastic. Lots of honey accented by orange and a slight apple. The back end is a pleasant array of spice and clove. Taste matches the smell. Honey predominates, and, in my opinion has a perfect amount of carbonation. A great representation of the style.

Type: 12-oz. bottle
Glass: Karl Strauss 26th anniversary snifter glass
From: Barons Market in Alpine, Calif.
Price: $3.99
Purchased: July 18, 2015
Consumed: July 18, 2015
Misc.: N/A

Poured a honey, caramel, hazy color with 1-to-2 fingers of off-white rocky head, which thinned out rather quickly. A few bubble streams coming up from the bottom along the sides. Poor lacing on the sides. Below average-to-poor retention. (Sight - 3.75)

Smelled honey, caramel, sour fruit, pear, apple and earthy notes, ending with sharp peppery cloves. (Smell - 4.00)

Taste pretty much follows the nose, although not as good. Got pear, apple peel, light apple juice, caramel, sour or slightly spoiled fruit, honey, pepper and candied cloves. (Taste - 3.75)

Light body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Abrupt finish. (Feel - 3.25)

This was only my third kind of this style, so I’m not going to compare. This beer had its moments, but something just didn’t work out as soon as it hit my lips. Great value for $3.99 a 6-pack though. (Overall - 3.75)

12 oz bottle into a teku.

Appearance: Pours a hazy copper color. The head is about a finger high and eggshell in shade. Retention is nothing special, though a little bit of lacing sticks to the glass. (3)

Smell: Sweet caramel malts dominate, with additional biscuity touches. Some lighter stone fruits appear when it opens up. I'm struggling to pick up any significant rustic notes aside from subtle touches of bread and black pepper, though.

Taste: Starts off with plenty of caramel and brown sugar qualities, maybe even some graham cracker. It finishes vaguely spicy, with some black pepper and a touch (I do mean a touch, too) of farmhouse yeast. Pleasant, but lacking depth. (3.25)

Mouthfeel: Despite the powerful crystal malt sweetness, it finishes quite dry - dry enough to be easy to drink, in fact! Sweetness does accumulate after many sips, slowing things down. That's due to the fact that it doesn't feel very lively on the tongue. (3.25)

Overall: It is what it is, a nice springtime beer, no more or no less. Still, I can't help but wish for more of a rustic character - this tastes more like a typical amber ale to me. Worthy enough, but I like to think there are funkier biere de gardes out there... (3.25)

3.24/5: Not bad at all, too bad it lacks the proper farmhouse characteristics

Poured from the bottle into a tulip glass.

Solid and somewhat opaque rust colored brown, with perhaps an orange tinge to it. A good appearance of middle carbonation through a thick body, but also some very fine micro line rising on the sides. Head is tiny, barely a finter but manage a controlled and solid puck that keeps getting repopulate. Creamy top, off white, and a solid looking garde.

Aroma doesn't seem to hint so much at big farmhouse notes, but a sense of almost faint lamic fruit acid quality, and sourdough bread comes off. Obvious biscuit and cookie like notes on the bouquet, which match with a slight sour twinge nicely on the beer. Seems subdued, but nice.

Palate seems on first sip quite neutral. Not much obvious until the final swallow seems to be complete. Decent malt depth, a good coating through the palate but manges to emphasize cookie caramel than farmhouse. Mild biscuity finish coupled with just a hinting bit of pepper, with a great aromatic almost smoke like aftertaste. Sweet caramel just a touch as well, but the sweetness definitely seems to standout above anything else.

A decent brew but seems to lack obvious large yeast and noticeable properties that seem to make the style so distinct. A very subtle garde but also real easy drinking because of that.

Excellent beer. Very smooth taste. Aroma doesn't justify the taste. Must try on tap not bottle
