Yeah this has been in my cellar for a while. HOpefully it has aged nicely.

Decent creamy foamy 1/2 finger head fades slowly, decent lacing, mostly clear mahogany reddish brown beer

Nose old malts, soft aged malt, caramel, toffee, nutty, little toasty brown malt, faint yeast faint oxidation.

Taste sweet, candy like, little yeast, little oxidation, then candy, caramel, toffee, nutty, little toasty, little syrupy sticky, nice soft aged malt but very little, hint bitter spicy hops. Finish is sticky little syrupy, mild bitterness, hint oxidation.

Mouth is med bod, little syrupy, lighter but decent carb, no booze.

Overall not bad. Nice age other than mild oxidation, pretty tasty.

750ml bottle into snifter. Thanks for this one, wyllder.

A: Pours a very dark murky mahogany with a billowing light tan head that took minutes to fade into a very thick film that left a few streaks of lace down the glass. Spotty lace.
S: Rich and sweet notes of ripened fruits, dark dried fruits (dates, figs, and raisins in particular), with brighter fruit notes of pears, red apples, and red grapes. I might get a hint of coco as well.
T: Tastes old. All the flavors of the nose are there but they are faded and muted. There isn’t much sweetness either. Flavors of sherry, raisins, caramel, cocoa powder and ripe fruits come through mixed with a light sourness similar to tart red fruit skins. Wet cardboard oxidation is peaking through around the edges, and I get a lot of tobacco in the finish. The aftertaste is full of sherry and cocoa.
M: The alcohol is pretty much integrated at this point. The carbonation is tingly and light, the body is medium, and the mouthfeel is lightly syrupy and acidic.
O: This one is well past its prime. It’s not undrinkable, it’s just not very good at this point. It just tastes old.

Pours a nice transparent red with a thin tan head. The nose is of sweet red apple skins with a nice light tartness. Toasted grains play in as well with a hint of a rye like spice. Incredible nose, extremely well integrated and robust. The flavor is great, not quite as bright as the nose. Tart red apple skins with a touch of sweet sugary caramel. Toasted grains and that same spicy rye note with a touch of oxidation that adds depth rather than detracts from flavor. Thick full body with an effervescent feel from assertive carbonation. Fantastic stuff!

10th Anniversary Old Ale is a dark copper color. It’s a tad hazy. Backlighting gives it really nice crimson highlights. An attractive tan head covers the top. It stands a couple of fingers tall and is very slow to recede. Lacing was rather thick and sticky. Looks good.

The nose is good. It smells sweet and chock full of caramel malt. It’s rather complex. It smells a little spicy and fruit cake-ish. Praline and hints of cherry and raisin are secondary. Oak adds a lot to the mix and adds quality depth. On the tail, there is a bit of a cocoa flavor. It’s a nice touch. Alcohol is there, but doesn’t come through all that strong. Good stuff.

The flavor is likewise good. It does have a rather sweet caramel malt base. Light cocoa-esque chocolate malts are also noted. It’s a nice combo. It does have a bit of a fruit cake flavor, but not in a bad way. There’s a distinct nutty or praline flavor that’s really nice. Oak adds a lot to the overall flavor profile. Lots of character. A little cherry and raisin are noted on the tail. Alcohol is definitely there and seems a tad strong for 8.7%. It’s not warm or hot though. Finishes malty and oaky.

The body is on the lighter side of medium. It’s a bit thin and insubstantial. Carbonation is light. It’s not too far from smooth. Just a little more body would do it. Having said that, it does go down rather easy. This 750 won’t be any trouble.

10th Anniversary Old Ale is a good release from Southampton. It’s a well-rounded Old Ale that has a nice flavor and quite a bit of depth. The only minor complaints I have are about the thin body and (slightly) too strong alcohol flavor. The latter is a little surprising given its age. At any rate, good stuff. Drinking pretty well right now.

A - A caramel colored beer that yellows on the edges. Leaves some spots on the sides.

S - A lot of caramel, some burnt and brown sugar, and dark fruits.

T - Pretty straight forward, mostly caramel and burnt brown sugar. Some dark fruit, and a little bit of booze. Meh.

M - Smooth, medium bodied, moderate carbonation.

O - Not particularly good. Probably should have been drank a while ago as MasterSki so astutely pointed out.

Got a bottle of this from belgbeerdrinker. Someone else brought one too - not sure if we opened both as it was pretty late in the evening. Contract-brewed in Royersford, PA. Served in a Heady Topper glass.

A - Strangely large and persistent tan foam, that leaves behind spotty lace as it slowly recedes. Dark red-brown opaque body.

S - Roasted grains, brown sugar, dark fruits, caramel. Somewhat cloying.

T - Burnt sugars, apples, unpleasant oxidation. Not as good as the aroma, and largely muddled.

M - Smooth, creamy, medium-full body. Lower carbonation.

D - Unfortunately this is well past its prime - probably should have been consumed two years ago, although I'm guessing there will be some bottle variation based on storage conditions and such. Perhaps Southampton will make a new batch of Old Ale so that I try this fresh. At this stage, don't give in to the urge to pull this of the shelf to see if it's still good - it's not.

Appearance- Two and a half finger width head it lingers, the color is a deep dark amber.

Smell- Apples, raisins, carmel

Taste- The apple smell follows through on the taste, on the front end there is a slight bitterness from some hops but the bitterness fades quickly. The alcohol is present but not overpowering, but for something only 8.7% I would have thought the alcohol taste would have been somewhat subdued with 4 years age.

Mouthfeel- Very carbonated, the mouth full is somewhat medium not too thin but not very thick.

Drinkability- It is slightly fruity, a little bitter, rich but not too rich. Compared to other old ales I have had better drinkability, but I have had worse.

Thanks to my friend Matt for picking this up in New York City.

The beer poured a deep, dark, murky, crimson-mahogany color with a resilient, one-finger head of light tan froth. Small droplets of lacing cascaded down the sides of the glass.

The nose was rich and complex. Super smooth. Sweet, fruity and a bit boozy. Figgy. Prunes and dates were noticeable too. Dark and somewhat port-like. Caramel malts came through strong. Overall, very enticing.

A deep, caramel maltiness dominated the flavor profile. Brown sugar notes appeared as well. A touch toasty. Fruity in the center. Spicy. Slightly boozy and a bit musty on the back end. The lingering finish was surprisingly crisp, woody and dry.

The body was super light and airy with a fine, prickly, carbonation. For a four-year-old beer, I was amazed at how how over carbonated this turned out to be. Over time, the carbonation issue lessened.

Southampton makes a number of terrific brews but this anniversary beer was merely better-than-average. I was hoping for more depth in the flavor profile and a bit more heft overall. Amazingly, I believe this beer could have benefited from some additional aging.

Pours dark amber with an off-white head. Lightly carbonated. Smells of mango, sweet malt, some earthy hops, and slightly oxidized overall. The taste also exhibits some oxidation. The hops have faded, just notes of mango nectar- a little tangy. A bit of cardboard in the mouthfeel, also oxidized. This was a well kept bottle, but well past its prime.

Thrown in as an extra by Jwiss22 - what a nice guy!

Appearance -- Pours a rich, dark amber with rose highlights. Light seems to want to pass through but struggles to do so. Voluminous caramel head.

Smell -- Raisin, candied nuts, toffee, vanilla, rum and sherry, chilly weather baking spices, mild cocoa. Very rich, very aromatic.

Taste -- Raisins and prunes at the forefront, candied almond, pie spices, toffee, molasses, mild pipe tobacco, and an abundance of vanilla. Sherry and faint cardboard are evident; it's clear that what oxidation this beer has seen was largely in it's favor. A bit of spicy and bitter vegetal hops in the finish provide a nice punctuation.

Mouthfeel -- On the heavy side of medium-bdied with ample carbonation. A few swirls in the glass corrected the bubbles.

Drinkability -- This is just about everything I hope for in an Old Ale: rich, fruity, spicy, and complex. This is the kind of beer that you hope is waiting for you when you come home from a long day of work. Loved it. Thanks, Justin!

A: Amazingly heady... Almost half beer, half head. Offwhite, pale tan. Beer is a murky chestnut brown.

S: Warm, dark fruit aroma. Some cardboard scents, but on the lighter side. There's something that reminds me of acetone on the back, as it gets a good bit of time to breathe... Black marker at a distance.

T: Oxidation has added some pleasant port / sherry like flavours to this one. Aging has done well. Dark fruits, and a warm malt.

M + D: A fine, well aged old ale. Great for easy sipping and indulging in. I think it might be a great candidate for the right, more delicate cheese.

Review from notes taken on 4/17/10 during an old ale/barleywine tasting with some friends.

After a struggle with the cork that ended up breaking inside the bottle, I had to resort to a cork screw to set this brew free. It pours a hazy brown color with a creamy offwhite head. Retension is fairly decent with a good amount of lace clinging to the glass. Sweet malty goodness is about the best description of this aroma that also includes vanilla and oak. Taste is very smooth with vanilla and woodsy notes that has a lingering sweetness. Medium creamy body with a mild level of carbonation. The oak lingers with more and more alcohol becoming pronounced as it warms. The alcohol is aparent in both flavor and warmth and becomes a bit astringent but not too overbearing as it somewhat accents the minor level of hops that are included. Very smooth brew to say the least, the vanilla flavor that lingers in the mouth almost flirts with being unnatural. Overall very good.

Thanks to jedwards for sharing. Served in a tulip. Poured a hazy mahogany with a quarter inch, frothy/bubbly, off-white head. Some sediment present in solution. Nose reveals caramel notes, malty, vanilla, booze and a kiss of hops - definitely smells like an Old Ale. Taste consistent with nose with the addition of some astringency and a slightly spicy quality. Mouthfeel is medium-light in body and very lively, just short of prickly. This is a very solid brew - could probably stand to age a little bit more to bring it to its full potential. All and all, seems like an Old Ale/American Barleywine hybrid. Find this beer and cellar it for another 3-5 years.

A: Pours a deep amber brown with a mountain of head that recedes down to a half finger that doesn't seem to be going anywhere. Great looking beer.

S: Smell is of sweet malt, dark fruit and raisins.

T: Candied sugar sweet upfront followed by more mellow, yet still sweet, malts. Just a bit of booze on the finish.

M: Start off feeling nice a smooth but then fills the mouth a bit more than I enjoyed.

D: Drinkability is decent.

wow, this one is pungent. the generous head is very giving with its scents. retention is great and the color a deep mahogany--a little hazy. decent lacing

vinous aromas, sherry, black cherry blackcurrant from the hops. date sweetness, bready

rich, elegant malt character: full of sophisticated elements. spicy (partly from the heat, i reckon) with a sour, almost wildyeasty finish, that i suppose is more closely linked with hops. i get a little suggestion of cocao nibs, perhaps in texture (you know that ever-so-slightly chalky texture?)

the mouthfeel is rich but hardly viscous

truthfully, much about this brew features an elegant complexity usually reserved for belgians. drinks like a cabernet, kinda. another phenomenal southampton production

P- Grape and Gourmet in Va Beach

I was lucky to get a 22 of this.

A- a murky reddish amber tone to it with a gorgeous fluffy head that is tainted brown. Nice stick and mountainous.

S- sweet malt tones mixed with sherry alcohol. There is also figs, dark candied fruit, raisins and much more sweety tartness.

T- Very complex flavors but let me try. i get caramelized brown sugar but covered with dark candied fruit that includes figs, raisins and sweet malts with a strong alcohol presence. It also feels like a bourbon/wood flavor.

M- very sweet and somewhat carboanted. Flows very well down the throat but the sweetness takes away from it.

D- very heavy and not something to pound down. It is nice if you want something to sip over an hour but it wont go down quick. I'd purchase the 22 again.

Appearance: Cork rot on this bottle, which Dan got from a Whole Foods somewhere. I'd seen it around before, but hadn't gotten it, and it had disappeared by the time I was ready to pick it up. Glad someone did. Not a gusher, but there is an impressive, bubbly head that rises out of the slightly hazy, deep mahogany body. Agitation actually reforms the head, meaning the carbonation in this one is happy to come on out. Lacing is similarly sticky, clingy, a little fuller than I'd imagine. A good persistent dusting and a fuzzy, mold-like collar last quite some time. Actually, very nice.

Aroma: A little mild and "far off," but pleasant. A lot of heavy, earthy, complex malty notes, and only the faintest amount of oxidation - just the tip of the iceberg, with a faintly estery, sherry-like note. The malts are sweet, toffee-like, heavily toasted. A faint salty note appears in the finish, but it takes quite some time to rear its head.

Taste: Terribly complex. A ton of deep, sweet malty notes, very toffee-like, with tons of caramel, bread crusts, faint (far off) cocoa, and tons of fruits - cherry, tropical fruits, raisins, figs, raisins. It's fairly sweet, on the whole, and I imagine it was at some point more and has become a little more well-attenuated since. There's also a faint amount of oxidation, but it's incredibly well-integrated, pleasant, and nice.

Mouthfeel: Huge and fluffy, with tons of carbonation in a "thinned" out body (probably because of age), making for a beer that has a great Belgian "sublimation" character. Incredibly big-bubbled, but big-bubbled in an "even" way. It does settle down nearer the end as the carbonation leaves this one, but it's very well-done.

Drinkability: I'm thinking this beer is approaching its prime now, or perhaps right past it as Dan suggests - either way, it's drinking fantastically well at the moment, and I suggest cracking them sooner, before the oxidation begins to overpower some of the more subtle notes present in this brew. At 8.7%, this one doesn't nearly approach anything undrinkable, either - the only "chemically" notes here are the oxidative notes, perhaps slightly sherry-esque, kind of acetone-esque - and would go fantastically with a milder, creamier cheese or a mild dessert. It's a complex brew with plenty to offer, and I'd highly recommend anyone buy this one up - all of it - if you see it, and enjoy it soon.

Poured into a pint glass on my 10th wedding anniversary (June 18, 2009). Obviously I'd been holding onto this one for awhile. . . .

A: Murky, slightly reddish amber-brown body with a 2-finger foamy light-tan head. Leaves no lace behind.

S: Raisins and red wine -- make that port. Also the sense of slightly stale malt and alcohol in general.

T: Brown sugar and sweet caramel malt lay the foundation. Also dried fruits (think raisins) and berries. I swear I get strawberries. Port wine is there too. It finishes with a dry woodsy feel, which surprises me. Heat from the ABV is felt in the belly right away; heat is even more evident as it warms.

M: Pretty fizzy for this style. Medium-to-heavy in heft.

D: OK. A bit too boozy and gassy.

Wow, sat on this for 3 years, part of a great Trade with MuenchenerKindl - many thanks once again.

Been in the DBF for the whole time, pours a well-carbonated clear mahogany brown with a well formed tan head. Tons of aroma with this one - rich and maltly, with hints of chocolate, coffee and anise. Fizzy tasting brew with the subtle hints of choc and coffee dominating. Down under the malt blanket, a hint of aged bourbon lurks, and I luv bourbon beers. But just a hint.

Overall, a well aged beer that hides any alcohol - I'm guessing 7-8%. And BA says.... 8.7% !

Poured from a 750ml bottle into an imperial pint glass.

A: The beer is a coppery brown color with a large off-white head that fades quickly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is of caramelized malts, brown sugar, some spice, some hops and a little fruit.

T: The taste is sweet up front with flavors of brown sugar caramel and some fruit. The malt character is hearty and there's a decent hops presence that provides some balance. There is a little bit of an alcohol sting. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Smooth and a little crisp, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

D: Tasty, goes down ok, not too filling, good kick, good representation of style, I've had this beer sitting for some time obviously and certainly seems to be past its prime. Overall, it's a decent beer to drink for a while, but there are definitely others in the style that I would pick first.

Bottle into red wine glass. Purchased 3/19/09 - so, about 2.5 - 3 years old.

Pours a very hazy red-brown with a fluffy, fizzy khaki head that dies down within about a minute. Lots of carbonation and effervescence left in this one. Good lacing too - really a nice looking pour.

Nose is fruity and buttery, notes of toffee and red berries. Slightly metallic. Oxidation comes through clearly

More of the nose in the taste. Overly sweet, sugary even, a bit thin and metallic tasting, Sherry-like oxidation. Lots of thin, almost harsh sweet berry notes. This one is clearly past its prime. A shame, but exercise due caution for this one - I took a gamble since it was only $8 a bottle, and lost.

Mouthfeel has a soft, fluffy, almost softly fizzy carbonation, over a medium body. Maybe a bit thinner than medium.

Thanks to EPseja for sharing this three year old bottle conditioned ale, I'll be reviewing this from a Chimay chalice at cellar temperature. Paired with various cheeses, including Raclette, sharp white cheddar, and Iberico.

Appearance- The initial surprise is a reddish raisiny-brown hue, reminiscent of Rodenbach Grand Cru. Great color, the head rises a solid two fingers... light tan with a reddish hue. Lacing is decent for the style, light to moderate. The beer is slightly hazy from the get-go, even though it was sitting perfectly still before the pour.

Smell- The dominent ingredients are candi sugar and strawberries, without much in the way of leather or meat... two common aromas for Old Ales.

Taste- As in the nose, candi sugar is upfront and easily the most dominant factor. It remains the same though the middle, then it finishes nice and dry with a Belgian type of bitterness... the alcohol really packs a punch almost immediately, which surprises me since this has three years on it to mellow out the heat.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability- Although the texture is silky and quite nice, it quickly billows and becomes too much to comfortably contain in the mouth. The swallow is gassy, generating burps that interrupt the relaxed atmosphere of this tasting session. An interesting Belgian take on the style, it just could have been more complex.

750 ml corked and caged bottle courtesy of Mike, thanks again for another great New York brew, splitting with my dad right now, we each poured these into oversized wine glasses, color is a mix of a medium brown and a copper, 3/4 inch slightly foamy light tan head that did not stick around for long, not much retention or lacing, smell is made up of sweet malt, roasted almonds, English hoppiness, raisins, herbs, toffee, booze, and caramel, taste is mostly sweet with a slightly dry finish from the hops, luckily they help balance things out because otherwise it would be too sweet overall, lots of caramel up front, some chewy but still sweet malts in the middle, dark fruit and mild bitterness make up the finish, really taste the raisins and toffee as it warms up in my hand, there is some alcohol warmth at times too, sweet, nutty, hot, and slightly dry mouthfeel, medium bodied, could probably benefit from having less carbonation for a fuller feel, taste does not last very long for an old ale, could not finish the big bottle myself and glad I shared with my dad, although it is under nine percent, it tastes well over it at times, pretty filling stuff, needs more hops or earthiness to balance things out more, drinkability suffers from sweetness, not my favorite brew from Southampton and they were probably capable of brewing something much better to celebrate their decade of existence judging by other beers I have had from them in the past, but still it is a good brew, although it is pretty light for its style it is enjoyable aand shows a big European influence like they were going for, I would drink it again, recommended

taste: though i didnt have it fresh, this beer does appear to have held up pretty nicely...the green hop presence has faded but remains a nice centerpiece. Creamy caramel, bourbon, smoke, raisins/dates, brown sugar, and other dark fruits shine nicely

mouthfeel: moderate burn in the followthrough, medium body with a chewy caramel center

drinkability: pretty nice
