Notes: Southampton Double Ice Bock is based off of a traditional German-style Bock beer. This German lager beer is rich and malty and brewed to an alcohol strength of 6-7%. “Ice Bock” is produced when a Bock beer is partially frozen in order to increase it’s alcohol content. In this process, some of the water content turns to ice, effectively strengthening the flavor and alcohol of the beer. We take this process one step further. After the initial freezing, the beer is decanted off the ice and frozen a second time. The resulting beer is a deceptively smooth and amazingly strong lager.

Poured a dark golden color with a small, off white head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of caramel and toffee malts, light dried fruits, and alcohol. Taste of caramel malts, wood, nuts, sweet caramel and honey. Alcohol was present, but balanced well, a really nice eisbock, thanks EDA!

#70/110. Shared by schen9303. 8oz. bottle into Hill Farmstead stemware.

Pours thick with little to no head. Beer is a clear orange copper with no lace but huge, thick, oily legs that really cling to the glass. Solid.

Nose is rice, metal, pear and a slightly sweet lychee fruit. Moderately aromatic.

Opens corn, moderate hop and yeast bitterness. Some sweet cane sugar and a fruity malt body come through in the middle finished by accented yeast and booze. Sweet, syrupy aftertaste. There's a ton of complexity here but not all the flavors that come through are great.

Full bodied with moderate carbonation. Slick and viscous in the mouth and a little bit bubbly and oily going down. Really coats the palate. Messy finish with a long, lingering aftertaste. Pretty nice.

As an Eisbock, this is a very good interpretation of the style. However, as an enjoyable beer, this doesn't quite cut it. Certainly worth trying since there are so few pure eisbocks around. Expect an experience... just not necessarily a great one.

a 7oz nip bottle purchased at the SPH. This brew is a dark rusty nail colour with floaties and particulates abounding. Their is no real head to speak of although their is a slight fizzing of this brew which unleashes a ghastly crackling sound out of my brandy snifter, sampling glass. The aromas encompass many different things and this brew can only be compared to something like a eku28, samiclaus, or aventinus eisbock. I pick up dark fruits, booze, caramel, various german malts, flowery, leafy green hops, caramelized sugar, and more. The taste follows suit with a level of complexity that is hard for one to comprehend. Caramel, sugar, dark fruits, subtle german malts and hops, flowers, and more! The mouthfeel is thick, and *truly* coating and the drinkability can only be docked .5 points for this brews massive $18%+ abv! Truly a masterpeice of US artisianal craft brewing.

A big apology for my first review that referenced a joke (as I saw it), that was, in fact a very bad judgement call on my part. I'm sorry everyone, and very thankful for my chance to try this magnificent brew! Phil is brewing wonderful beers and I am very impressed each time I make it out to the village of Southampton.

Pours a nice light orange-caramel color, pretty but absolutely flat. Minimal carbonation when the glass is swirled, even violently. Heavy legs on the sides of the glass. Aroma is syrupy sweet, some light mandarin orange, a faint alcohol presence.

Taste is a light syrupy caramel malt with some light hops. Toasty, slick, sweet fighting with bitter. Nice oily hop flavors, fresh orange blossom honey, maybe a bit of apricot or some such fleshy fruit. Surprisingly, no alcohol flavors -- none at all -- but the alcohol is obviously there as you swallow. Leaves the mouth hot.

Mouthfeel is light for what it is, especially with the ABV, but you can certainly feel the alcohol burn. A nice job not letting the malts do all the talking as with some other eisbocks I've tried. As close to a distilled spirit as I've ever tasted in a beer, more schnapps or cognac than a brewed beverage. Could pass for a thin bourbon if I didn't see the bottle. Tiny sips; make it last.

I don't mean to rate this so low, it's really better than my score suggests. However, (1) it needs more (or any) carbonation; and (2) the alcohol really drags the drinkability score down. Obviously, it takes a very talented brewer to make something like this and not come out with paint thinner.

Bottle # 27/100, 2004 vintage, 187 clear mL.
Appears a hazy light amber with a small white head. Scattered lacing is left around the glass.
Smell is of peat, toffee, vanilla, molasses, caramel, and dark fruit.
Taste is of sweet vanilla cake flanked with caramel, molasses, and ripe fruit.
Mouthfeel is sugary sweet, syrupy, with brown sugar running along the palate.
Drinkability - ABV is present but not the 18% as advertised.

Light amber color, with a small ring of lacing. I would have liked it to be a darker more amber/ruby like color.

Fairly rich and nice nose (though not overly interesting and complex,) with fresh biscuit-like malt, apple, plum, peach and fairly refined alcohol.

Initially a bit sparse and husky and fairly underwhelming until the mid-palate. After that, creamy, buttery, caramel and fruit filled malt roam about, combined with a rich and luscious, huge and succulant body, especially after the mid-palate. Overall, it could be a bit more concentrated and richer up front, the finish could be longer and it could be a little sweeter as well. Overall, this is not as good as other extreme Eisbocks I have had, particularly Broken Keg Eisbock, from the old PP Carlsbad brewer.

Thanks for the opportunity to try both vintages side by side Brad, a wonderful experience.

Beer is brown and clear with no head, no carbonation, no lacing, no retention.

Aroma is malty, the older one was a little papery.

Beer is thick, like syrup, dry on the finish, very dry, malty and slightly oxidized, a little plums and stone fruits with some raisins and figs. Interesting, very nice beers but the older one is probably over the hill at this point.

at my favorite brewery (Kuhnhenns) with wohlfs. flemdawg, hoppybunny, and eyedrink ale. thankyou eyedrinkale for bringing this in. bottle #35. poured copper, with no head. aroma 1st smell got a sour aroma than the alcohol, fruity, like apricots, maybe pears, honey, vanilla, and malts. flavor, peaches, honey, caramel, hints of malts and the alcohol came out just right and for being 18% was not to strong at all and a nice dryness.

2004 vintage, bottle 58 of 100.

Poured a darker and slightly hazy amber color with a very small sized head. Aroma of dark fruits, caramel, alcohol, and somewhat musty. Tastes of green apples, caramel, brown sugar, and alcohol. Sweet with a green apple sourness to balance it out. Definite alcohol presence but not 18%. A definite sipping beer that I wish I had move of!

Huge thanks to slander for providing this one. Bottle 11 of 100 vintage 2006.

A-Golden kissed copper hue with a wisp of light tan foam that vanished quickly and no lace at all. No real surprise considering the ABV.

S-Rich, sweet caramel, brown sugar, caramel and ummm, caramel and a touch of alcohol burn. Overall though this comes off subtle for such a big beer.

T-A boat load of sweet, luscious caramel malt, a touch of dark fruit and vanilla sweetness. The alcohol is amazingly barely perceptible.

M-Full bodied and as smooth as smooth can be!

D-Only not a 5 due to the 18%....this one WILL kick you in the ass for sure if one does not respect it. Absolutely unreal smoothness! This one is all caramel and alcohol....a liquefied, adult version of a Werther's Original!

A: Pours a nice golden amber hue with no real head at all. No lace noted.

S: Aromas of rich sweet caramel, brown sugar, and mild dark fruits. Rather subtle though to be honest for such a big beer.

T: Sweet candy malts. Loads of caramel, dark fruit, and sweet dark cherries. Simple but loaded with goodness. Not a hint of the ABV that this one packs.

M: On the fuller side of body, still carbonation, sweet, drinkable, deadly.

D: Good, I loved this one. Nice brew, one I am honored to get the chance at drinking.

Received in a trade with Eyedrinkale. Thanks for the opportunity, Mike. 2006 vintage 7oz. bottle # 48/100 consumed on 12/12/2009 and poured into a snifter at 55 degrees. The cap opens with a hiss. The beer is transparent dark orange with a tinge of rust and a modest half inch beige head. I expected this to be flat so a small head is a welcome head.

The aroma is of booze macerated dates. The dates are dominant, but notes of dried raisins are also present. There's a little sherry oxidation character that is rather graceful. The nose is dry, overall, but there is a touch of brown sugar and honey sweetness beneath the dried fruits and alcohol. Speaking of the alcohol, it's distinct in the nose, but I'd say it's rather well hidden for being near 20%. A vigorous swirl of the glass enlivens caramel and a dash of toffee. I notice leather sauntering away in the distance. The aroma opens up nicely with warming.

The flavor is sweet and rich dates with tame alcohol. There's more sweetness in the flavor than in the aroma. The sherry oxidation carries through to the taste and it does the beer no discredit. The dates are less prominent in the flavor, though they are present, and the influence of caramel is more apparent. I don't taste the alcohol so much as I feel it. The capacious ABV makes its presence known between midpalate and finish in the form of a centered warming on the back of my tongue that eventually arrives at my throat and in my chest. The finish is not unlike brandy, and it's surprisingly dry. My lips are sticky and my mouth is left desiccated. I desperately need a drink of water.

This was a rare treat. It drinks somewhere between a spirit and a beer. It doesn't hide its alcohol, but I found it complex and very enjoyable.

The final beer of our Southampton showdown. Thanks to nyrangerfan for this one. Bottle #53/75, 2009 vintage.

A - I was surprised that this was actually carbonated. A finger of tan foam settles to a thick collar and some wispy bubbles, but no lace. Mostly transparent caramel body. Impressive for the ABV, no doubt.

S - Grains, malted barley, sweet caramel, honey - largely traditional "bock" flavors. Alcohol is extremely well-hidden.

T - The taste has a bit more overt fusel alcohol, but it's still well-hidden for 18%. The main flavor is sweet malt, although the estery alcohol adds some bitterness to keep things from becoming cloying.

M - Lower carbonation, some obvious alcohol heat, and a lightly sticky texture that never seems overly heavy or viscous even though it's fairly full in body.

D - The alcohol is impressively disguised, and 7oz is actually a fairly appropriate serving size - I think I'd be done if I tried to tackle a 12oz (or larger) on my own. Drinks more like a spirit than beer, but quite enjoyable as a nightcap. I'd really like to try this again with more age on it, as I can imagine it being quite special at the 4-5 year mark.

Bottle 38/75. 2009 vintage. Cellared since it was released.

No head. Orange hued copper color.

Caramel and toffee. Malty. Some oak. Some heat and booze in the finish. Sweet. Some red apples and pears. Vanilla as it warms.

Medium bodied. Ends fairly clean.

Overall, this was a really fun and unique beer to try. One of the smoothest and easiest 18% beers I have ever drank. Could hardly taste the alcohol. Very enjoyable.

Thanks very much to Thirstybird for sharing this - I know he had to wait in the cold for a while to score this. Bottle #65/70 served in a tulip. Poured a translucent copper - no head, just some bubbles. Nose is very subtle - malty, some caramel and a hops character reminiscent of a German pils. Taste consistent with nose. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied and slightly viscous with a little heat up-front, that gradually dissipates at the back. I am pretty shocked that this is an 18% beer. Good thing it comes in small bottles because it is deceivingly light and easy to quaff.

7 ounce bottle with gold foil acquired in a trade a few months ago with Eyedrinkale, 2006 vintage, bottle #77/100, thank you so much for sending me this Mike after I talked to you about it on your trip to Carlsbad, you truly are a generous man, review #1,250, currently drinking from Belle-Vue flute glass

A-Vibrant medium red color with some golden highlights, thin 1/2 inch bubbly off white head, stays around for a while, did not expect this to have any carbonation, surprisingly good retention, nice legs
S-Alcohol and it is pretty harsh smelling, toffee, maple syrup, fresh tomatoes, other raw veggies, honey, sweetness, black pepper, raisins, brown sugar, spicy accents, citrus, plums, and caramel
T-Starts off with dark fruits, sweet malts in the middle too, finish is hot on the tongue, some molasses in the finish, good amount of caramel too but the booze play a bigger role than usual in this brew, the finish gets more dry as time goes on, more brown sugar in the next few sips, now after forty minutes or so I am picking up a lot of dates and floral accents, this one changed a lot and I came to the conclusion that this should be drank at room temperature, more flavors come out that way and you taste things you would not otherwise, in my last few sips now and I am getting a big mix of caramel and toffee, then dark fruits, then dry and toasted in the finish to go along with the alcohol
M-Hot, sweet, syrupy, and tangy mouthfeel, medium bodied, carbonation is moderate to my surprise, lots of tiny bubbles rushing to the top still after a half hour in the glass, taste lingers a long time and a lot of that is thanks to large alcohol content
D-Alcohol is not hidden at all but it is not too aggressive, does not seem like eighteen percent, smooth with both sugary tones and balanced dryness, like a nice sipping liquor, perfect serving size for a brew like this, inviting and drinkable for its strength

This was in my top five beers to try list forever until Mike shared his wealth, have not had many beers of this strength but this one took me for quite a journey, like nothing I had before, wish this was not as rare and I could revisit and experiment with aging this for different periods of time, this is 187 milliliters of complexity, there is a reason why this won gold at GABF in 2000, feel honored to trying something that says not for distribution or sale on the side of the label, would love to drink again and especially an older vintage, highly recommended

The 2006 vintage appears remarkably darker than the 2009, which appears orange colored. Neither beer displays any head or leaves any trace of lacing on the glass.

The aroma offers apples, grapes, English malts, toffee.

The flavor is sweet, but not nearly as much as I was expecting, certainly not cloying. Although the beers drastically differ in appearance, they smell and taste nearly identical. The beer drinks almost like an apple / grape liqueur, or an after dinner cordial. The bready, biscuity, English malt character is present in the flavor, but plays only a subtle role.

The feel is thin and light, with virtually no carbonation. Like sipping a strong white wine or alcoholic white grape juice.

Overall, this was quite a treat, and especially cool to try not one, but two vintages of this rare delicacy.

Thanks to Torgo for bringing this rare, cute little bottle to a tasting & busting it open. 7 oz. nip bottle, 54/75, 2009 vintage.

Small pour looks like amber that a pre-historic bug might be trapped in. Nose is fruit-infused malt liquor with an alcoholic sting in the nose hair.

Double Ice Bock hides the alcohol avalanche well, but it still leans into the back of the throat with a solid shoulder. Loads of honey dominate the palate, along with pears, other light fruits. Spare carbonation leads to a heaviness, both in the mouth & in the stomach. Tasty, but a few ounces is plenty, seven would be fine, but understood why a full twelve ounces of glass would be too much.

This is a good brew that I'm delighted to have had - once. Everything about this beer screams extreme, from the nose to the heavy taste.

Bottle #22 of 75 from 2010 year release. Waited for a long time out the cold to try this one.

Poured into a snifter glass. Pours an absolutely clear orange with some faint bubbles coming to the top - no head to mention of but I'm not surprised here as the ABV is quite high. The beer has a slight carbonation to it though.

Smell: A strange mix between grainy malts and clover honey. This is the least attractive thing for me in this brew. The graininess strikes the nose harshly and honey-like profile tries to make up for it but fails. What is fascinating about the nose - zero alcohol. No hotness detected what-so-ever... Pretty impressive for 18%.

Taste: Another surprise is the hops and is the first thing to grab the tongue. This is quickly followed by a mellow sweetness, similar to a very light honey and apricots. Again there is a graininess coming from the malts almost like tannins from the husk of grain. The mouthfeel is obviously full bodied and on the low end for carbonation. Drinks like its 2% ABV

Overall: Ummm... Hello??? Alcohol? Are you there? This drinks like a non-alcoholic beverage and thats what makes this beer crazy. Even half a pour and I'm buzzed so its definitely there, you just won't notice it until the end. Unfortunately for me the beer has some faults in the way of harsh bitterness and graininess that needs to be mellowed out more. For everyone holding onto those icebocks, they definitely be aged to get more complexity out of them.
