This beer is a blend of the Plaid Ferret Scottish Ale aged in a used up bourbon barrel spiked with Brett and the River Mink Mild Brown Ale aged in a Cabernet barrel with Lactobacillus.

On tap in a tulip at Bodega on 5/23/11

Murky appearance. Plum colored with apple cider highlights and rust hues. An 1/8th inch head doesn't hold long, settling to a skim. No retention or lace by the halfway point.

The aroma is fruit juice to the max. Potent cranberry, mostly. Hints of apple, dark grapes and faint cherry. Doesn't smell nearly as sour as it does straight tart. Soft grain notes. The nose more closely mimics the palate as it warms.

Tastes nothing like I expected, and that's a good thing. I had reckoned a tart, tangy juice box would greet me but instead there is a subtle, yet sour/funky twinge upfront that leads into a toned down middle with dark fruit tones. The back end is grainy with notes of unsweetened cocoa and toasted pleasantry. Musty, dry earthiness as it nears room temperature.

Medium to light feel; juicy with a touch of granules. Carbonation is compact but effervescent in its turf. Finishes pretty clean with mild residuals.

Surprisingly enjoyable and well-crafted. Who would have guessed this would be one of Weasel Boy's best beer?

Served on-tap at Bodega on 6/9/11 in a standard pint glass. Appears a nice brown with reddish hues. There is a fairly thin off-white head that leaves small amounts of lacing.

The aroma is full of alcohol and a very whiskey-like scent. The mix of flavors is huge. Lots of cranberry and other fruit, sour at the end, slightly sweet at the beginning. The alcohol tastes also stick out as well. Overall, very complex and contains many different tastes.

The beer is pretty dry, medium bodied and has a good amount of carbonation. Overall, this is a unique drink. Definitely something that is very interesting and different to drink. The complexity of the flavors is huge, and different than many other brew types, making it very interesting to put back.

On tap at Weasel Boy last Saturday afternoon. Served in a wine glass. Pours a moderate brown-red color with a short, quickly-dissipating head. The nose is a bit creamy with faint notes of oak along with some light fruit character. Flavor has a touch of tart cherry along with some very lightly-sweetened bready malt character. Very mild acidity and creamy body. Easy to drink, though not super complex.

Mahogany with a brown head that's decent, this looks fine for the style. The nose is medicinal and has a blend of of rotten fruit, compost, meat and solvent. The palate is worse. Vegetal, rotten fruit, compost, manure, rotting meat are all present. No sourness is noticeable. Watery, mildly sugary too. This is awful.

First sour from Weasel Boy.

10 oz pour into a wine goblet.

A: Pours a nice chestnut brown, with some mahogany and amber highlights, small ring of a head, not much retention, but hey.

S: Some light tartness and sweetness, dark fruits, and oak. Not bad, but not a ton of aroma.

T: Oh yeah. That's better. Dark cherry skin, lactic notes, some toasted crackers, a light vinegar note towards the back. Brett drys it out toward the finish.

M: Creamy, but a little under carbonated. Dry finish.

O: Very nice take on the style, and a great first attempt at a sour. Not the best flavor, or the best represetation of the style, but hey, it's good :)

On tap at Bodega. It was only $5.50 a pint, if I remember correctly. So that definitely makes it worth another shot. I quickly came to the conclusion that this beer is much better on tap than it was out of the cask at Barley's Real Ale Fest. So in the interest of giving this beer a fair shake, here's my experience with it on tap.

The appearance is a bit oafish. Its a murky, dark purple-red. It looked a bit nicer when I took my glass outside to the patio and the sun hit it. There is a loose foam cap that is nearly everlasting, but the bubbles are too coarse to create any lacing.

Here is one of the characteristics that was much improved from the casked sample I had earlier. Wood comes out strongly, casting a sweet vanilla aroma over the beer's tart berry frame. I'm getting lots of raspberry, so when the vanilla combines in it creates notes similar to raspberry cheesecake. Exploring the woody notions further, one will find some damp funkiness and wine soaked barrels.

The flavor is very nice, but this beer is quite mild and reserved. I can't say that the flavors are dialed up to 11, but they a quite nuanced irregardless. There is plenty of wood, funky, oaky and smooth. Lots of tart berries emerge, combining with sweet vanilla for a desserty type of sweet and tart. This beer is more vinegary and wine-like than it is sour and biting.

The dryness is dialed back nicely when served on tap. But this beer is still bone dry. Its pretty highly carbonated from the get go, and the mouth doesn't develop much through the length of a pint. I'd say the body is just reaching medium.

This beer was much nicer the second time around, and I want to attribute that to it being served on tap as opposed to on cask. A very enjoyable, easy to tackle refresher. Head on down to Bodega before its gone!

The beer is chestnut brown with ruby highlights. Small beige head. The aroma brings some odd scents of plastic, nail polish, along with some more buried pleasant aromas of classic our bruin scents and cherries. Light bodied, low carbonation. Needs improvement.
