A - Poured out a clear, burgundy color with a one-finger, thick head of tan foam. It left sticky rings of lace on the glass.

S - It smelled very spicy and piney with a toasty presence.

T - This is a great imperial red. Big roasted malt taste with a strong pine and citrus bitterness.

M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A medium bodied beer with a dry finish.

O - This is a really good imperial red ale. Big bold flavors all around.

I had this on tap at the Laurelwood Pizza Company. The server warned me that it was only sold in a 12 oz. glass for $4.75. I was OK with that because, hell, that's a lot cheaper than what I pay for stuff in Philly! But I would have liked a pint, two 12 oz. glasses would have been too much... although I do kind of remember her saying that I could only get one glass, so maybe they were trying to ration it out...?

So a "free-range" organic red ale... I'd never had one. It was a dark amber with a reddish-cast beneath a short head of off-white. The retention was good, and it left thin veils of lacing about the glass.

In the nose it expressed a medium caramel maltiness and lots of piney and citrusy hops.

The flavor was also balanced towards hops, but there was just enough malt there that it didn't seem lacking in any way - just balanced towards hops! Piney and grapefruit-like over caramel, it finished with lingering hops as well. A very solid bitterness backed it, but I highly doubt that it was the 100+ IBU's that they touted. It just didn't seem that bitter to me, and I'm guessing that that number was derived from a calculation that gave too much credit to the flavor and aroma hops.

In the mouth it was medium bodied with a dextrinous edge. Starting at 20 Plato, it should have dropped to around 3.6 to achieve its listed 8.6%abv. It was moderately carbonated, and a touch creamy-smooth.

Overall, impressive! I'm not normally a big fan of red ales, but this was almost a west coast red ale-barleywine. Unfortunately, they were already out of bombers or I would have taken a few with me!

Quite red amber in color with plenty of foam in the Ciney snifter. Quite spritzy and frothy in the mouth. Long zingy caramel-tinged flavor of roast malt. Well balanced and sharpened up by all the hops and the acidity. It actually could be more malty and less hot, but the alcohol dries the stuff out as you sip. A long nose herbal hops and roasted grain of with a little funk. A whiff of honeysuckle.

Flavor is cedar and dark grain with a woody finish. Some baked apple along with that touch of malty sweetness. This is supposed to be a bitter version of the Free Range Red, and is rated at 100 IBUs, though it’s not astoundingly bitter. Overall it’s an interesting big brew, though rather sharp for my taste as the hops take hold. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Central Market north of Seattle.

Poured from the bottle into a Dogfish Head Signature glass.

A real nice caramel brown and red body, highlights with some dark chestnut brown around edges. Light tan head makes four fingers and settles slowly with a nice cap, kind of creamy a little fluffy.

Nose is tea like herbal hops and soft brown sugar malt undertones. Quite nice and refreshing.

Palate hits with a good rich body, and density. Tea and sweetened Southern style tea action seems to hit on the palate. Juicy malt profile with a refreshing leafy hop angle. Finish leaves a little bit of caramel tasting malt goodness.

Overall pretty tasty, but the sweetness is a little much. I am also not a big fan of sweetened tea and this beer reminds me of it a bit.

06/20/08- Had on tap at the Portland airport.

Presentation- Via the tap into a standard pint glass.

Appearance- Amber colored pour with a 1/2 inch head and light lace sheets.

Smell- Lightly assertive, but a nice nose of pine and citrus hops. Mild caramel malt noticed.

Taste- Hops are pine in majority with a light grapefruit rind flavor. Very intense flavored hops at that. Caramel sweetness works wonderful with the hops.

Mouthfeel- Average carbonation, but very smooth. Nice lingering aftertaste.

Drinkability- I would love to find a liter bottle of this stuff. Great strong ale...wonderful rich lasting flavors. This beer is a seasonal and is not retired.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a clear medium reddish orange amber. One finger fine light tan head with great retention and lacing. Great aroma of pine and citrus hops with light fruit and slight sweet malt. Flavor is very well integrated sweet malt, pine and citrus hops with light fruit juice and citrus. Flavor is subtle at first, but the flavor element reveal themselves in a pleasant way. Citrus and hop finish. Medium bodied with nice creaminess, excellent mouth feel. A very nicely made red ale; glad this rare one made it up to Seattle.

Yes boys and girls. On cask (no take out, no growlers and no happy hour discount) at the Laurelwood Pizza location on NE 40th.

The beer pours the expected amber red color with good head retention and lacing. The nose is complex, showing lots of sweet malt, but countered very nicely by the wave of hoppy bitterness. That being said, the nose is not as pronounced on cask as this beer is on CO2. The flavors on the palate, however, are simply mind blowing. This beer is much more sweet and malty on cask, but the tidal wave of hoppy bitterness imparts all kinds of flavor and hoppy goodness. I get sweet malt, baked apple and a hint of cherry, which is then countered and intensified by the hoppy bitterness. There is noticeable pine, pepper, citrus and quinine, all of which marries incredibly well with the sweet malt. In some ways, the cask version of this beer reminds me of a hoppy English ESB (a VERY hoppy ESB), or a somewhat lighter (again think very, very hoppy) English style barleywine (but without all the sweetness). Mouthfeel is very smooth and long, which while interesting, really doesn't work very well with this beer. Also, the sweetness hurts the drinkability just a bit, though this is still a very drinkable, absolutely delicious imperial (hoppy) red amber ale.

If I didn't have the regular Deranger to compare it to, I'm sure I'd find this to be a completely awesome, mind blowing beer. However, instead I find it to be simply a very good, very well made beer... that unfortunately simply cannot hold a candle to the CO2 version of this beer. Nevertheless, there is no denying that this is an excellent beer.

Edit from 1/16. Have been a fanboy of this beer for years, but with all the comings and goings of different brewers at Laurelwood over the years, there has been some understandable batch variation. Frankly, I glass I had at the Sellwood pub a few months back was underwhelming to say the least. However, am sitting in front of glass tonight that really takes me back (it's that delicious). What I love about Deranager, at it's best, is the incredible light mouthfeel, that somehow still carries all the rich flavor and hoppy bitterness, oh so well. In the current version, the hoppy goodness carries the day (this more like a well crafted DIPA, with a red ale overlay), but with some sweet malt and light clove that pairs very well with all the hoppy goodness.

When it's at it's best, this beer is hard to beat, when it comes to an imperial red. Sadly, more times than not, this beer is no where close to being at it's very best.... it makes me very thankful to be drinking the glass I'm enjoying tonight.

Served in tulip. Poured an attractive, clean, clear red with less than 1/2 inch of khaki head that had moderate retention and light lacing.

A big hit of bright, strong hops hits the nose first, followed by just enough malt sweetness to provide a solid counter-point. On the tongue the story was the same, just bolder and bigger. The citrusy hops lingered nicely at the back of the palate.

The body was full and smooth, but finished clean and dry, despite it's sweetness. Drinkability was good, but I'm not sure I'd take on 2 in a row. Overall, a very good brew, close to a must try, and certainly worth your time.

A: Poured a clear crimson color with a nice dirty white cap, good amount of bubbles and lacing

S: Big citrus nose with a little bit of pine

T: Immediate fresh, big citrus followed by a light pine, there is some lightly toasted malt. The finish is dry, a light hop bitterness, booze sting

M: Medium bodied, well carbonated with citrus dominating the palate and mouthfeel

O: Lots of fruity esters. While this beer was a great drink, I thought it woudl have had a little more backbone.

10 oz. nonic at The Horsebrass on cask, and then a full impy pint, cause this is just so fucking good! The is an amped up version of their Free Range Red (which I never really cared for), 8.6% ABV, 100+ IBU according to the pub's menu.

Appears slightly chill hazed amber, with a khaki head that is very long lasting and thick.

Smell is very strong PNW hop goodness, citrus and pine, so fresh and pungent, wow! Semi sweet, spicy malt.

Taste is fantastic. I really love these big red west coast hop bombs, one of my favorite styles, and this one really nails it. Very spicy, citrus hops just dripping with resin, a super pungent tongue curler for sure, but I mean that in a great way! The bitterness is kept in check, just enough to balance the malt, which has a nice gingerbread taste. I've never had too much PNW hop flavor (bitterness yes, flavor, no), but this one gets close...to perfection!

Mouthfeel is very smooth, with a lighter body, and a bit oily.

Drinkablity is perfect. I had no problem drinking 30 oz's of this, and had I had the time, could have drunk 20 or 40 more no problem - well, at least until I woke up!

22oz bottle poured into a large mug. Date on the side of the bottle is 8-12-2015. I hope that's the bottled on date.

Pours dark (but translucent) amber-red with a pretty big tan head that fades slowly and seems to be leaving sheets of lacing. Moderate carbonation. Smell indicates that 8-12-2015 is the bottled on date. This smells really nice, very fresh hoppy aroma, it smells like hop cones. Moderate malty presence, sort of a vague toastiness.

Taste is more of that nice hop characteristic, a stronger and better defined toastiness, and a nice roasty caramel. Hops come across with almost a minty (but not quite minty) characteristic -- more of a refreshing leafy suggestion. Deep bitter, building aftertaste composed of both hops and roast.

Mouthfeel is coarse, filmy, resinous. Overall, this is a really good beer. I continue to think Laurelwood deserves more attention than they get.

Laurelwood's FIRST bottled beer, a December 2006 limited-release 1-liter swingtop bottle with red wax seal (only 400 produced). Silk-screened red & white label with a "deranged"-looking chicken/dragon creature...the chicken must be an allusion to the name of their tamer version of this beer, Organic Free Range Red. This beer is 7.9% ABV.

A: Pours a clear amber-orange, silky and thick. Has very little carbonation and only about 1/2 finger of gauzy off-white head. Something thick and ominous-looking about this one...

S: Relentless fresh, juicy hop smell bursts from the glass. Orange and grapefruit, pulp and pith. Also smells of fragrant earthiness, grass, hay, herbs and dirt - an odd but discernable 'natural' smell of all things green. Some caramel malts and rich grains.

T: Intense flavors, full of grapefruit, orange, evergreen with lots of toasted caramel malt. Some 'seasonal' holiday spices seem to have been mixed in, with notes of cinnamon, nutmeg and syrupy ripe fruit.. Quite a mouthful, flavors are rich and deep, evolving nicely in the mouth.

M: Full in the mouth, leaving a smooth viscous coating. Virtually no carbonation. Bitterness clings on the back of the tongue, with some alcohol warmth and slightly sticky sweetness remaining everywhere else.

D: Flavors pack a wallop but are well-balanced and don't overwhelm. I had tried this beer once before the latest release and remember it was fantastic; I'm hopeful this is not the last time we see the Organic Deranger around. A wonderful beer, to which I give two huge thumbs up.

Slightly hazey orange amber body with a thick fuzzy tan head about 2 inches thick which is good to have that much carbonation considering it has been in a growler for about 5 days. Nose is a wonderful smoothe hoppy feel with some honey vanila notes that a very inviting. Huge hoppy bite enters the mouth with a bang. This is a sharp citrus based hop feel. Very proninent for any type of red in the way of hops. More like a IPA in most ways. A very favorable beer if you nare a hop head. The bitter is not that loud on the finish. Note: This beer was tried back on 02-05-06 and I'm just getting around to the review on the computer. I highly recomend visiting this establishment!
