No harmony here. This beer is by turns, too malty, too sweet, too assertively hoppy. The various elements of the thing don't really come together in any way and it just makes for an uncomfortable quaff.

Hazed amber-copper colour, one finger of off white head, some lace. Smell is dominated by sweet caramel, muted/muddy fruity hop notes, citrusy. Taste is quite hoppy, grapefruit and tropical fruits, peach rings and gummy candy, "green" bitter hops, mid palate malt sweetness. Lightly carbonated, medium dry body, slightly slick. Just OK, not something I will probably seek out again.

500 ml bottle purchased from LCBO for $6.25 CDN. Interesting labelling with a bad-ass elephant with giant tusks on the front, reminds me of the Mumakil from Lord of the Rings. Served cold into a pint glass.

Appearance - Moderate pour yielded a thick syrupy beer with a very dark thick orange color and capped by a finger of dense off-white foam that was reminiscent of cream resting on top of a cappuccino. Good retention but minimal lacing

Smell - Sweet pineapple and mango dominates with a sickly sweet caramel malt in behind. An earthy grapefruit aroma lies underneath.

Taste - Starts a touch sweet with a the excessively sweet caramel malt then goes bitter with a resiny pine like flavor. Fruitiness picked up on the nose less prevalent here although the grapefruit certainly makes and appearance. Flavors are a bit one dimensional and transitions less than smooth. But yet after a few sips, I'm enjoying this more and more with every sip. It just works somehow. Booze comes through after a couple more sips though

Mouthfeel - A bit too syrupy and sticky with limp carbonation. Then goes to a mouth puckering dryness.

Overall - Not the most balanced beer, a bit too thick and syrupy and taste transitions are a bit forced, but this is still pretty good and easy enough to quaff. Probably echoing some other reviews here in that it's not that bad but there are many better made examples out there.

Midtfyns Double IPA defines itself as 'dark-amber' which would be accurate if not for the glowing highlights - there's nothing 'dark' about this spotlessly clear and resplendent ale. Even its head is bleach white, significant since it covers the entirety of the surface and imprints on the glass.

There's no reason something dry-hoped with Chinook, Cascade, and Centennial hops should smell at all yeasty, and yet there's a lot of boozy wet bread in this aroma. Mind you, the green, vividly plant-like qualities of the hops are also present. It actually brings me back to my homebrewing days as it resembles the fresh buds going into a rolling boil.

That hint of wet bread and unfermented wort turns into a reality on the palate; this is disastrously under-attenuated and has a shallow, simple sweetness that lacks any kind of toasted nut or caramel flavour. Even the hops taste raw; they are ultra-earthy and borderline astringently herbal, like a green tea steeped too long, and also fail to provide much redeeming flavour.

This presence of pure hop nectar and unfermented wort allows that 9.2% alcohol to creep into the picture. It's not a deal-breaker considering it's only fair to expect some strength out of this style, but I do subtract points when it's this evident. The finish is dry enough to resemble almond flour or pumpkin puree and, though it has steeped green tea leaf notes to distract, is far from clean.

The best Double IPAs have a hedonistic hoppiness that goes beyond words and merely elicits satisfied groans instead. Most examples of the style made outside the USA can be described as the "less attractive older sister" and Midtfyns Double IPA does nothing to quell that impression. It has an uninhibited hoppiness alright, but not one that is particularly captivating nor gratifying. Pass.

Purchased at the LCBO for around $7.00 or so for a 500ml bottle. Served at 5deg C in a tulip

A- Opens well and pours a tiny head as expected. Dark gold color and nearly filtered clear

S- Lots of hops and malt here. Tones of heat

T- Malt and hops. Way too much malt and sugar though.

F- Creamy good.

O- Not bad but will not buy again. Malt bomb

Food Pairing

This pretty good beer went ok with... Fish and chips. The beer overpowered it though

Enjoy

A - Pours a nice copper colour. Cloudy with a two finger beige sorta head. Good lace rings and a film of retention.

S - Booze, grass, citrus. Subdued.

T - Boozy. Pineapple core, orange, strong malt balance that almost gets buttery.

M - Good bitterness that turns a bit rough. Good carbonation, medium to full body.

O/D - Hop presence was a bit rough here. Hops were more for bitterness than flavour. Odd buttery note in the malt body was a bit suspect as well. Not a fan.

I haven't really had a bad IPA yet and this one is at least okay. I found it a bit too bitter but I don't think it's the hops, more likely it's the generous amount of citrus.
Still, it's a strong beer and worth a try, although a bit expensive for its quality.
