I always considered Amstel to be the 'Heineken Light' before Heineken Light existed. It always has a slight hint of skunk to it in my opinion, but definitely not as strong as a Heineken or even a Stella. Looks slightly darker than Bud, Coors.etc...way more flavor too and definitely on the high end of the 'light beer' category. There is nothing special going on here, but I do prefer an Amstel to any other light beer I've tasted...very good for its category/style.

Well chilled from a bottle, pours a pale straw color with quickly dissipating thin white head. Fairly crisp and refreshing with carbonation but with tastes of boiled corn and only very slight hops taste. Yes, it's drinkable as a beer, but it's kind of "why bother".

12 oz. bottle into a pint glass

A - Moderate pour produces a 2 finger head in height that is a bright white in color and light foam in appearance. The head dissipates quickly to an ultra thin lacing. The beer itself is clear with high carbonation in the form of moderately sized bubbles rising quickly toward the surface. The beer is a light straw in color. 3.5/5

S - The aroma is typical of a light lager with corn, light malt, unmalted barley, and hops that come across as grassy, herbal, and noble. The aroma is really fairly sweet with just a bit of hops to balance things out. 3.25/5

T - The flavor follows the aroma dead on with corn and light malt leading the way with their accompanying sweetness. A bit of graininess from unmalted barley shows up as well before the hops kick in feature grass and herbal notes and a very clean flavor from Noble hops. Very light lingering bitterness. Flavors are all more undertones than anything and the beer is fairly watery. 2.75/5

M - Light and crisp. Mainly a thirst quenching beer so it is very drinkable and sessionable. Somewhat drying and this dryness lingers on the palate for a bit after swallowing. 3.25/5

O - Decent offering, especially for such a light beer. Good beer to drink on an especially hot day or with really heavy food. Not a beer that I would approach for the sake of flavor and complexity. 3/5

Very light color, typical lager you find in any store. Smell is faint like soapy beer, pours clean with little head that fades fast. Taste is average, nothing special nothing great but it is easy to drink. Has a light feel and just your typical generic beer. I would say this is a better choice than other beers in the class, least it has some better taste than your typical mass market guys.
If you want average you found it.

A light beer with some color beyond pale yellow, I can dig it. Aroma was like, nothing.

Taste is mild hops, light malt, lots of water, refreshing carbonation. Already know my rating is gonna be above the average because there are no off flavors and it seems like it is 100% barley.

Pairs well with other stuff from the region (dank). Good on a hot day for what it is. Used to love these, was kind of a segue to craft for me 20 years ago.

Pours a crystal clear light piss color with head that vanishes quite quickly. Nice aroma with a bouquet of floral noble hops. A sweet Pilsner malt character shines through. Unfortunately, the Pils character in the taste gives way to grainy unpleasant malt flavor. Tastes like they oversparged or used third running to make this beer. Low ABV and thin tasting.

I used to like this beer back when I first started drinking. Thought this was a classic import. How I was wrong. Even still, I do admire the nose. Just think the taste and feel and subpar.

Just your typical light lager. Pours clear gold with a thin white head. Not much in the nose. Malty taste with a slight hop presence. Finishes extremely clean, which is the best part about this beer.

I am a homebrewer and love all types of beer. We brew only ales, such as IPA, Porter, Stouts and the like. Every now and again I like to drink a nice light beer, but I can't stand any of the domestic beers brewed here (bud, miller, coors, etc.). I tried Amstel Light a while back and think it is a great light alternative to the the domestic light beers. It does have a bit of a skunk smell, but I think Heineken/Light does too, and I like that one. I think the flavor is a nice, crisp, refreshing flavor and is really nice for a change to the typical higher gravity ales. I think a lot of the reviews on here come from "beer snobs", which I actually consider myself one as well, but I think the critics are a little harsh on this one. To me it is a great, refreshing, light swilling beer.

I'm not a beer aficionado, but as far as light beer goes this tastes more full flavored than American domestics. Yeah it has a lower alcohol content than it's counterparts and costs more, but as far as light beer goes, I think it's very good.

Appearance:
Big foamy head. Some lacing. Light golden body. Very clear. Medium carbonation.

Aroma:
Very mild. Some malt. Clean.

Taste:
Tastes like a watered down version of Warsteiner. This is a watery beer. Washed out malt that is a little bit smokey or toasted. A mild hop bitterness is present and lingers on the palate.

Mouthfeel:
Very light bodied and watery. Lots of carbonation. This is a very light bodied beer with only 95 calories. I believe this beer is all malt. That means that without adjuncts to lighten the body the only way to get the body so light is to use a reduced amount of malted barley. The result is a washed out maltiness that is somewhat lacking yet inevitable when brewing an all malt beer that is so light.

Overall:
Amstel Light is a nice alternative to the typical light beer (BMC etc). It is very light and drinkable, yet it has some bitterness and a little bit of smokey malt flavor. There is also a little bit of sweetness to the beer. When served cold it is quite refreshing, especially in hotter weather. Amstel Light is actually pretty good and of better quality than most adjunct lagers. However the price is high for what you get. The most similar beer to this is Heineken Light. Heineken Light is a little more hop forward in flavor, while this beer is more balanced between hops and malt. This beer is better than the scores it has on this site.

This is beer for people that don't like beer. Bland and boring.

I do not say this because "oh it's a cheap macro lager, yuck..." That is not the case at all. I happen to enjoy Coors and Budweiser from time to time. I also know that you shouldn't expect a lot from the style. This was just bad though. It was lightly yellow and tasteless. The only semblance of flavor was a extremely slight bitter note on the finish. Outside of that, nothing.

The Netherland's version of Budweiser and Miller Light, the Macro of Amsterdam, nothing special, nothing particularly awful as others have said, but nothing special or remarkable either, obviously.

Pretty f'ing bad. Here goes:

A: Light gold, very well carbonated. Leaves a moderate head with some lacing.

S: Well, it's not as corny as American adjunct lagers, but this doesn't mean it's good. In fact, the smell is rather skunky - regardless of how many times I've had this beer, the smell is always skunked. I've given up looking for a fresh bottle. Some wheat and corn, but mostly skunk.

T: Follows the nose, which isn't a good thing.

F: light and well-carbonated. Good.

O: I've honestly never had a fresh bottle. God bless those who find one.

As a guy who prefers high alcohol micro brews and full bodied flavor this is not bad for a light, low alcohol alternative. Better than Bud Light (by miles) and superior to Miller Lite and Coors Light. All you beer snobs who want to hack on it, accept it for what it is a decent resemblance of a real beer in lower calorie and lower alcohol form.

I don't think this beer is awful. It has its place an almost always available low alcohol beer. I would absolutely drink this over Budweiser beers or Coors.

Brilliant clarity with light golden color

A bit adjuncty on the nose, corn, DMS, perhaps slightly skunked, acedylaldahide

Not much to the flavor, DMS, adjunt flavors

Well carbonated and fits the style guidelines

I bought a single out of curiosity. It doesn't suck but it's not something I would buy again either. I would welcome one offered to me, however.

This is a decently brewed light lager. Don't rate it down just because it's not an IPA; rate it against its own comparative brews. Compared to other light lagers, this is a well-balanced, not overly grainy or adjunct-y light lager that is crisp and refreshing.

Canned version
I think this is one the best light beers I've ever had. I don't mind the low ABV, it has a fuller flavor than AAL light beers. I just wish I could find Amstel regular lager here in the US, as I expect it to have a fuller flavor and even more enjoyable.

Amstel Light brewed by Amstel Brouwerij B. V., with an ABV of 3.50% This brew pours out a Light amber color, with a nice white head. It has the look of a light lager. The smell is rich with sweetness. You also pick up on some grains and malts. Nothing bad so far now for the taste , it is mild with flavor. You also pick up on the watery taste in this brew. Not saying that is a bad thing. There is also grains and malts, in the taste of this brew. Amstel Light has a nice balance to it, there is nothing overpowering about it. The mouthfeel of Amstel Light is mild, but bold and rich with flavor. I like the taste of this brew. Overall I'm giving Amstel Light a 3.50 out of 5. I would buy this brew again. This brew would go down good on a hot summer day.

This is essentially a Heineken that's light (not to be confused with Heineken Light). I like Heineken quite a bit and this tastes just like it for the most part. Not sure why it's considered awful by so many people on here.

A - Golden, clear, short head.

S - Faint grain. Sour notes.

T - Minimal. Very weak nondescript grain notes. Slight sweetness.

M - Very light on the tongue. Gone before you notice.

O - Meh. I think it is not terrible to drink, but I don't see the point. Almost no flavor, and what is there is not terribly appealing.

12 oz bottle served in pilsner glass.

Appearance: pours a thick, pillowy white head that drops slowly with little to no lacing. Color is clear pale straw with moderate streaming carbonation.
Aroma: surprising bit of aroma for the style. There is a definite breadiness and some grass as well.
Mouthfeel: very light and watery, with a quick, drying finish.
Flavor: mirrors the aroma. Breadiness and some sweetness from the barley, a mild bit of grassy hops.
Overall: for light beers, probably the best I have tried. It actually has flavor and aroma. Essentially tastes like a watered down Euro lager.

From the bottle. Sampled on February 24, 2015.

Kind of surprised I had not reviewed it before now. Medium golden yellow pour with a fuzzy white head that fades back.

The aroma smells of toasted barley malts and a clean, sort of grassy hop note. But thin all around.

The body is thin and watery.

The taste highlights a more grainy character with a clean hop finish. Light beers are light beers are light beers. This one is a little better than some.

Wow and not in a good way. Color is not bad but head fades moments after pouring.
The smell is not pleasant - wet grass and black pepper.
Taste - more grassiness here
Finish is not bad - clean with minty aftertaste.
Overall - It's been around for years so there must be a market for it.

Yet another beer that snobs love to rip on. I tend to like beers that I don't have to chew on, taste like coffee or chocolate or fruit. Amstel Light fits my tastes. A tasty refreshing beer I can drink anytime. This beer does not deserve so many terrible ratings, get over yourselves people.
