Fresh growler, hand bottled from cask at the brewery. Thanks to Adil and Milos for sharing! Deep mahogany with ruby edges, pours a thin but large bubbled head. The nose has a lot of spice, mostly cardamon and cinnamon, with vanilla and rye notes. Sweet rye like flavours with lots of spice and an alcohol heft. Not all that balanced really. Sweet, quite alcoholic, with a fruity finish.

Passable experiment. One of their five beers on the previous night, had at Grambinus. Black body wth a nice head. Sourish fancy brown beer with a dry finnish. Gets bitter and drier as it warms.A little boozy, spicy, not to the style really.Second growler 3 weeks later from Bob himself who brewed it. A black beer, malt and licorce, a little bitter.

500 mL bottle picked up at the brewery back in March; bottled Jan 6 2015 and served at cellar temperature.

Pours a deep ruby-copper colour; good clarity, and capped off with one finger of dense, creamy-looking, light beige-coloured head. It hangs around for five minutes or so, gradually wilting away into a wide, foamy collar and soapy cap, depositing a messy curtain of lace during the process. Looks great. On the nose, I am getting a lot of toffee and treacle, with fruity notes of raisin, black cherry, currant and prune being similarly plentiful. Hints of toasted biscuit and hazelnut also come through, with the aroma continuing to open up as it warms; quite complex and enticing, I must say.

Absolutely delicious; rather malt-forward initially, but this is counterbalanced in the tail end. It starts off with rich flavours of toasted grain, toffee and molasses, then leading into a mixture of raisin and plum fruitiness - these 'dark fruit' notes are substantial, but still underplayed here (in contrast to the nose). A pleasantly herbal, somewhat earthy bitterness begins to build toward the finish, with hints of baker's chocolate, burnt sugar and smoke tying things up nicely. On the more viscous side of medium-bodied, with low carbonation levels and an exceptionally soft, smooth feel on the palate. This is a rich-tasting beer, and it drinks like one - sip slowly, especially if you chilled it beforehand, because the warming will do this brew good.

Final Grade: 4.19, an A-. Grand River's Olde Defiant is one of the most impressive beers I've tried from these guys in years. Truth be told, this beer's availability (alongside their outstanding Mill Race Mild - another must-try) was my main reason for taking a detour through Cambridge in the first place, and I am not regretting that decision at all - though I do wish I'd grabbed a second bottle of this. GRB's biggest strength has always been their ability to brew excellent British-style beers, and Olde Defiant is categorically one of their best. I hope to see this one back next year, maybe even at the LCBO.

Bottle from the brewery, bottled Jan 6 2015. Served in a wellington pint glass.

A- deep brown/amber color. Bubbly foam diminishes like the foam in a glass of cola. It does maintain however a thin layer around the glass.

S- Dark fruit, raisins, plum juice, molasses, maybe even a hint of fortified wine. Alot going on here.

T- Taste nearly mirrors the aroma and adds some flavors of rich toffee, nuts, a hint of vanilla, burnt sugar, and fresh molasses cookie dough. There is a nice bitterness in the finish and a hint of smokiness along with a warming alcohol bite.

M- is a smooth beer with just the perfect amount of carbonation for the style. Medium bodied.

D- Very flavorfull and drinkable.

Overall a real nice aroma to the beer. Flavor is good from sip to swallow. Well balanced and quite enjoyable.
