Russian Doll is our latest fantastic voyage into the essence of beer. This time we've used the same malts, hops and yeast - the difference is down to the ABV.
There’s a great complexity when trying the beers side by side - the aromas & flavours from the malts differ widely as you might expect, but the hops also present differently from style to style as well.

330ml bottle from Brewdog.com (£2.50):
A nice Brewdog beer, probably the best in their Russian Doll series with good hops & tropical fruits on the nose before the dark ones took over come the taste. It was an easy beer to drink despite the strength & I liked it, although I'm not sure I'd want to see it as a regular offering.

The colour is brown, the liquid is clear. The finger thick pale brown head falls quickly down to a tin lid leaving no lacing.
The smell is very malty with lots of caramel, tart fruits, pineapples, mango and bitter oranges. Some raisins and a light bitterness.
The taste is grand and sweet with some balancing bitter flavours. Orange soda/syrup, raisins and caramel sauce. Full body. Bananas and banana peels in the aftertaste as well as a tart harsh yet light bitterness. The surprisingly short finish got notes of almonds and orange sauce.
The carbonation is light, the small long-lived bubbles are smooth. The liquid is thick and a bit fat.
A pleasant hoppy barley wine.

Poured into snifter.
Dark reddish-brown beer with 0.5 finger liquid beige head. Aroma typical for Brewdog - good hop profile, sweet malts, wood, spiritus, caramel. Viscous body, not so sweet, balanced, fruity, boozy. Commonly nice.
