Very Good
Pina PlayaPina Playa
Notes: The drought is over. Brace yourself for a Caribbean storm. This Piña Colada inspired Gose has a deluge of aromas with pineapple, coconut and lemon front and center. Followed by a torrent of zesty citrus and aromatic herbal notes that burst across the palate. Hold fast for a thunder clap sharp salty finish.

On tap. Look is golden, slight haze. Smell light citric acid, very faint funk. Taste is pleasantly tart, not overpowering at all. Not sure I’d identify pineapple blind, but there is a fruity citrus. The coconut comes very faintly at the end. Feel is relatively high carb. Overall a decent beer, but not remarkable in any way.

12 ounce can into tulip glass, canned on 8/15/2018. Pours slightly hazy medium golden yellow color with a 2 finger fairly dense and fluffy white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big juicy/lightly tart/tangy pineapple, coconut, fruit skin, lemon, lime, orange, citrus peel/zest, peach, pear, red/green apple, melon, white wine, sea salt, herbal, floral, grass, pepper, vanilla, wheat, cracker, white bread, light lacto funk, and yeast earthiness. Nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/light acidic yeast, pineapple, coconut, pale/wheat malts, and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of big juicy/lightly tart/tangy pineapple, coconut, fruit skin, lemon, lime, orange, citrus peel/zest, peach, pear, red/green apple, melon, white wine, sea salt, herbal, floral, grass, pepper, vanilla, wheat, cracker, white bread, light lacto funk, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate herbal, floral, grassy, spicy bitterness; fruity/lactic tartness, and fruit tang on the finish. Lingering notes of tart/tangy pineapple, coconut, fruit skin, lemon, lime, orange, citrus peel/zest, peach, pear, red/green apple, melon, white wine, sea salt, herbal, floral, grass, pepper, vanilla, wheat, cracker, white bread, light lacto funk, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/light acidic yeast, pineapple, coconut, pale/wheat malts, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness and tart/tangy fruit balance; with minimal astringent flavors after the finish. Moderately crisp/clean finishing. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering bitterness and tart/tangy fruit. Medium-plus carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy, fairly acidic/tangy/sticky, and slightly saline balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5.2%. Overall this is a very good gose. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/light acidic yeast, pineapple, coconut, pale/wheat malts, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth, crisp, clean, and refreshing to drink with the modestly acidic/tangy/bitter/drying finish, not overly lactic or salty. Very flavorful for the ABV. Very balanced authentic juicy fruits, Lacto, and pale/wheat malts. Just a little too bitter, and not as tart/acidic as expected. Otherwise a very enjoyable offering, and well made style example. Not overdone on any aspect. Tastes like a pina colada as advertised.

Well, I'm glad I didn't go hog wild with blind faith and buy more than a single of this. That about sums it up.

This pours a dirty golden, with some head at first and much less later. The aroma is promising. Something exotic is coming, with fruit. The taste it delivers is a confiused, mildly tart, mildly dirty bitter yet fruity sweet beer. It's a mess. The aftertaste is mostly fruity and it's fine that it dissipates quickly.

Not recommneded. Your light, fruity beer guests aren't going to appreciate this one. Stick with Elvis Juice for them.

Appearance: Light and semi-cloudy golden. Thick off-white head and lovely loops of lace.

Aroma: Nice coconut, citrus, and pineapple notes here. Appealing.

Taste: Really brilliant and complex. Definitely get the pina colada flavor coming through — a tad sour but not pucker. Refreshing and light and packed with taste. Solid and enjoyable.

Brewdog Brewing Co. "Piña Playa"
12 fl. oz. can coded "03/13/19 190138 1421" and sampled on 06/04/19

Notes via stream of consciousness: Nice packaging design. The colors work perfectly for the style. It's poured a hazy golden body beneath a to finger thick head of fluffy white that's slowly dropped to just a single finger thick, but this is a sour beer so that's actually great head retention, and there's even some very nice lacing left behind. In the nose it's tropical with a distinct note of coconut backed by sharp fruit. I'm not finding pineapple but there's something there. On to the flavor... there's some pineapple there for sure, but I still feel like I'm getting more coconut. Maybe the coconut just stands out more against the sour base beer. It's tart but not too tart, and not at all bitter. I guess it's a nice summer beer. In the mouth it's light-medium in body and crisp. Overall it's a decent gose, but I have a feeling that whether you like this one or not depends more on your personal tastes than anything else.

Decanted from a 12 oz (355 ml) can into a Tree House snifter; canned 08/15/2018 in Canal Winchester, OH.
A: Pours an ever so slightly hazy, golden color with brief head formation and somewhat soapy lacing.
S: Hit hard by pineapple candy up front, but nose resolves rapidly to a slight salted caramel note.
T: Sweet to semisweet with pineapple candy (think Jolly Rancher), coconut, sea salt, and a touch of caramel. Bitterness not in evidence at all.
M: Medium bodied with low to medium carbonation.
O: Very flavorful, drinkable, and enjoyable. Does taste a bit like a Piña Colada candy.

355ml Can from Brewdog.com (£2.45):
Medium to slightly faded amber that has a mild haze to it as well & there's a half centimetre, bubbly white head that disappears to leave a tiny bit of lacing around the circumference. The nose is quite tropical with the pineapple most pronounced, there's some sugar sweetness & what I thought to be strawberries coming through as well though; it's slightly funky & sour with some lemon notes & zest too. The taste is a little more sour with a lemonade like flavour kicking things off before the pineapple comes through but it's definitely a touch more subdued than the nose was. Fresh & zesty with some tropical touches, it's more drinkable than I anticipated & comes through with a medium body & moderate carbonation, it's easily the best of the style I've had but it is only the second of the style I've had I guess.
