Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.60%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our scene-stealing flagship is an India Pale Ale that has become a byword for craft beer rebellion; synonymous with the insurgency against mass-produced, lowest common denominator beer. Punk IPA charges the barricades to fly its colours from the ramparts – full-on, full-flavour; at full-throttle. Layered with new world hops to create an explosion of tropical fruit and an all-out riot of grapefruit, pineapple and lychee before a spiky bitter finish, this is transatlantic fusion running at the fences of lost empires. Nothing will ever be the same again.

Guess I should turn up some Pistols and enjoy right? Ok...
Pours frightening clear for an IPA with very good collar and very good staying power. Nose is strong hops and oats. No fruit here punks. Tastes good enough. Smooth start with slow finish of hops. Hard rock punk IPA? No, more like The Police ;-)

The CANQuest (tm) is in high gear with all cylinders hitting! I am drinking, reviewing & rating this one while watching FIFA 2018 World Cup play, specifically involving my Jump In/On the Wagen team as a proud member of #ADOPTICELAND. They are in group play today against Nigeria & I am wearing my Viking horns. What fun!

From the CAN: "Post Modern Classic"; "Our flagship IPA is a post-punk apocalyptic ale. This light golden classic has been subverted with new world hops, creating a devastating explosion of flavor. Kalishnikov burst of caramel malt, incendiary hop aromas of tropical fruit creating an all-out riot of grapefruit, pineapple and lychee notes preceding a spiky bitter finish."; "PUNK - Quintessential Empire with an anarchic twist."

Oh, man, I wanted to grab this CAN by its braces and shake it right out of its Doc Martens, but instead, I simply CANducted a standard Crack! & Glug. Punks don't get old, we just move to the back of the hall. Once sufficiently decanted, a swirling mosh pit was the next to come. This raised two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, tawny head that threatened to spill into the streets if I wasn't more careful, leading me to back off. It left loads of sticky lacing to remind me of its former presence & as a warning that it CAN return at any time. Color was a Golden-Amber (SRM = > 5, < 7), but The Gelt Gang declined since a) it was closer to Amber than Gold & b) they were watching the match on TV from my living room sofa & couldn't be bothered to rouse themselves. Nose was interesting in that it melded both citrus and tropical fruits, but the proof of this pudding will be in the tasting, right, lads? Mouthfeel was like having hobnailed jackboots do The Pogo on my tongue! Actually, it was medium, but with loads of prickly carbonation to ensure that it had my attention. Phew! I liked the way that they melded to flavors into something that actually resembled an AIPA. Too often, the inclusion of Caramel malt & tropical hops takes the (Straight) edge off & leaves me cold. It is not even me rating to personal taste, either, as a hallmark of the style is its bitterness. Here, it was pleasantly bitter without leaving me beaten & bereft in a corner. Pardon me for a sec as there's a wee ginger lass enticing me over for a snog. Right! I'm back. Lovely lass, her. I'll have to follow up after this show to see if she's up for a right shagging. I was on about the flavor, right? I definitely got both the grapefruit & the pineapple, but not equally with grapefruit leading the pack of droogs. Brilliant! I still could have done with a bit more bitterness, but I mustn't CANplain too loudly, lest any hooligans overhear me. Finish was loud, discordant and totally Punk. YMMV, but who the f**k cares?!? Sod off, you lot!

L: Clear honey with big creamy white head. Medium retention. A film remains, and leaves copious rings and sheets of lacing.

S: Caramel, honey, red grapefruit flesh, grapefruit pith, pine sap, tree bark, iced tea.

T: Diluted pink grapefruit juice and orange peel upfront; moderate honey/biscuit malt, some lemon iced green tea, and pine needle. Finishes fairly crisp and clean, almost no bitterness.

F: Light, well-carbonated. Kinda watery.

(12 oz can, canned on 04/09/18, purchased room temp 6 pack... poured into nonic)

L: yellow-gold liquid, slight haze; messy/spitty white foam... virtually no lace

S: orange zest, hint of pineapple, perhaps a very subtle note of spearmint; mango slowly emerges... touch of a light, sweet malt sitting at the bottom... the fruity hop aromas are pretty dense, rich; doesn't immediately strike me as a British IPA

T: on the palate, a different take - first met with a green tea and citrus peel type of bitterness, fruit flavor lingering lightly in essence, with a fresh herb note more prominent, while a dollop of vaguely creamy, butterscotch malt rests at the back end of the middle of the palate... malt and bitterness seem to me quintessentially British in expression (mineral blend?)

F: light-medium bodied, soft silky viscosity, delicate resinous grip... maybe a little too gripping (and filling) for successive rounds, and that's on an empty stummick

O: price wasn't too high so, despite the 2-month age of this, I may return to the store for more - dug the taste enough

Nose isn’t very floral. Color is slightly hazy. Taste is bready. Decent to good overal flavor that is drinkable. Not sure bitter that is typical of an ipa.

Pours a mostly clear, with slight haze, golden color, visible carbonation and a moderate white head. Good head retention yields a lathery film and lacing.
In the nose I first get an aroma of pineapple juice. It is sweet and with a hint of orange rind. A very faint floral and grassy hops aroma plays off of the bready malts.
Very clean at first, perhaps too much so, with little to no bitterness. As the drink warms up, the pilsner malts flavors are unlocked and provide a bready backbone. Light and gentle flavors of grapefruit, orange peel and light pine in the middle palate provide balance rather than hops dominance.
Medium bodied, clean, smooth and gently carbonated. The finish is clean and somewhat wet.
This is a bit different for an AIPA in that it is more balanced and clean rather than hitting you over the head with hops.
