BEER INFO

Brewed by:
BrewDog
United Kingdom (Scotland) | website

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.60%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Welcome to a post Punk apocalyptic mother of an ale.

A beer that spent its formative years Blitzkrieg Bopping around India and the sub-continent.

This light, golden classic has been subverted with new world hops to create a devastating explosion of flavour. Steel yourself for Kalashnikov bursts of caramel, incendiary tropical fruit and an all-out riot of grapefruit, pineapple and lychee, before a spiky bitter finish.

This is quintessential Empire with an anarchic twist. Turn up the volume. Pay the man. Embrace the punked up, pimped up Maharajah of Pale Ales.

Nothing will ever be the same again.

Poured a soft gloden color that thins out as you go down the bottle. Had a soft bread-looking head on top that dissipated into an oily white.

Smells wonderful! This brew has a caramel and grapefruit nose that is deep and fulfilling.

What a hop monster! This guy is all bitter, which is awesome imo. It's very light, not much of a malty backbone, and has a piney flavor of hops. It's good, but it's not as complex as some other US IPA's.

Overall, this is a brew that I'd order if I was at the pub, but isn't one that I would buy a case of. Not bad, not amazing.

"If some unemployed punk in New Jersey can get a cassette to make love to Elle McPherson for $19.95, this virtual reality stuff is going to make crack look like Sanka."

Sunshine yellow beneath an ivory colored crown that has a wonderfully sticky, bubbly texture and is beginning to coat the pint glass with loads of attractive lace. This is the single palest IPA that I've ever seen. Looks good, though.

The nose features nothing but bright, zesty, slightly cheesy American C-hops. If there are any English varieties in here, they're very well-hidden. Warming ushers in a power and pungency that makes the above score an easy call.

This (Brew)Dog is definitely barking up the right tree. While it isn't as aggressive as its brewers would like us to believe (The U.S is the land of huge hops after all), it is damn tasty in a freshly squeezed hop juice kind of way. On further reflection, and once the taste buds get into the act, perhaps the hop bill is an Anglo-American affair after all.

There isn't much malt present (no sin in a 6.0% IPA)... and what's appreciated isn't the least little bit earthy or toasted. It tastes like a very clean ale yeast strain was utilized. What's left is pure humulus lupulus. In the end, that's the best sort of IPA.

The flavor profile is relatively simple. Again, no problem for a beer of this style. We have pink grapefruit, lime and maybe even a little puckery peach. The tasting notes on the brewery's website are good for a few chuckles: lychee, kiwi, passionfruit, cherry and strawberry. Kidding, right?

Ignore the 'best by' date (1/1/09). The snappy hoppiness that is present in mid-late June won't last anywhere close to that long. Once the hops fade there won't be much left. The mouthfeel is light, edging toward light-medium for the style. The bubbles are fine and add energy without being annoying. Good job here as well.

This review call be boiled down to one simple sentence: Punk IPA is deliciously citric hoppy and is insanely drinkable. I can't wait to see if the rest of BrewDog's offerings are as well-crafted. Not sure what the bottle cost, but this is a repeat purchase for damn sure. Welcome to America, guys. We can always use more good IPAs.

Pours a half finger of head on a hazy medium straw body.
The aroma is big. Lots of mango, pineapple and orange.
The taste is big on the bitterness, but the malt is always lurking in the background making is very drinkable.
The texture is crisp.
Great aroma and flavor.

Poured a light hazy orange. One finger of quickly dissipating froth, leaving a nice light lacing on glass.Smells of citrus and pineapple, perhaps a little honey. Taste is very tropical, unlike a lot of IPA's that I had. Notes of tangerine, orange, pineapple, and a little bit of floral notes with very minor bitterness. Enjoyable. Mouth feel is moderately carbonated, a little on the flat side. Needs to be bolder here, more body. Overall a fine brew. Something I will definitely drink again.

330ml bottle poured into tulip 13/2/12

A clear golden yellow with a few bubbles feeding a
nice thumbs width of foam that hangs around long enough
to leave a bunch of random lace down the glass

S smells solid with lots of tropical fruits, pineapple,
tangerine, guava and some grapefruit, I also pick up on
just a little pine and sweet malt. there's some balance
but its mostly a tropical hop bomb

T more malt then the nose with more citric rind then fruity
flesh, some caramels in the mouth and some balance to go with it, taste is quite good but the nose was better

M medium bodied with just enough carbonation, a mild bite
to it and a nice citric rind aftertaste lingers for a while
but is fairly mellow

O I considered a perfect score for smell and 4.5 crossed
my mind for taste so a slightly higher score here. when I consider it's only 5.6% I like it even more, very easy to drink and I'm not walking sideways

Pretty happy with this one, no real complaints and a fair bit to be pleased with. A nice session IPA if there is such a thing and I can see myself buying more of this

Poured into my Isle of Arran imperial pint glass a clear light golden with a fluffy two finger craterous white head that clung like glue to the glass never completely subsides.English malt and floral hop aromas, biscuity with a tinge of iron. Not nearly as brash as the label might tell you but its a decent English IPA,its floral and leafy in its hoppiness, full on biscuit/caramel malt pretty much keeps this beer even in its hop to malt ratio on the palate. Its a nice beer not a big American IPA in style more of a slightly more brash English IPA.

A: Golden yellow, rather pale for the style. Big slightly off-white head with good retention. Some lacings.

S: Slightly perfumy hop character with a decent amount of grapefruit. Pine-needles. Toasty malt aromas.

T: Basically grapefruit, some faint notes of lemon, pine-needles and quite pleasant hop flavors. Somewhat perfumy. The malts are restrained, yet quite sweet and has a rather toasty character. The finish is actually quite bitter and since there is not much going on that balance it, it gets slightly to dominating. Faint note of alcohol. All in all, it's rather refreshing and good.

M: Medium body, quite boring mouthfeel. But for some reason, it fits the beer.

D: I like this one. Certainly not the most hoppy IPA, but it's very drinkable and refreshing.

Review from BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #26:

Huh? Punk IPA is the name, and you want to brew like a post-modern IPA?

Mildly hazed golden color; tight, tiny bubble lace. Quite fragrant with orange rind and faint butter, with a semisweet biscuity malt. The hop bitterness pushes the palate around for the duration, but never knocks the taste buds down completely. The hops are rough around the edges, but never harsh, with orange and evergreen flavors. Malt chimes in with a dense breadiness and toasted biscuit flavor, yet never really rises above the hops. Alcohol is there, lightly warming with an offshoot of buttery flavor. Orange rind hop in the finish with more of that toasted biscuit flavor, which all lands semisweet.

Nice to see a change thrown at the beer industry, giving the bird to modern brewing on their home turf, yet fitting very well within the US craft beer revolution. Sure, it's not your kick-in-the-teeth West Coast IPA, but it is a damn good rendition of IPAs in the US collectively. With each sip, it grew on us.

In a pint glass, the color of the beer is a little off-putting. It's a hazy yellow color that looks mor like a hefe. The small white head produces some lacing. Aroma is mostly sweet malt, with a bit of flowers and citrus. I love the taste: sweet malt with grapefruit and pine. A well-balanced beer, very enjoyable.
