Served in a Duvel tulip glass.

Man, what I wouldn't give to be able to order one of these from some nice young lass at a bar... Anyway, this stuff pours a clear ruby-amber topped by a finger of liht khaki foam. The nose comprises burnt toffee, peat smoke, booze, light vinyl, and pine resin. The taste brings in more of the same, with the combined forces of booze, peat, and resin forming a horrible gauze-dipped-in-gasoline-and-set-on-fire flavor that makes it nigh impossible to drink easily. The body is a straight medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a drying finish. Overall, the peat was just too strong in this beer. I'm a fan of the smokier Scotch brands out there, but this just overdoes things in the worst ways.

Thanks to leftpaw for bringing this to a March Madness bottle share a few years ago. Pours brown, dark caramel with rust kind of color and a lot of sediment or something that isn't entirely liquid floating throughout the beer. Aroma was maris otter, unsweeteened cola, hops and their bitterness.

Taste, actually enjoyable, substantial bitterness, alpha hops, this seems like an American barleywine blasted through and American double india pale ale. The caramel keeps coming at you like a PacNW ipa from yesteryear with a bunch of Cascade like hops. There is also a dark fruit like presence as if there was a quad yeast or something used here. Interesting mix of stuff from different styles going on here. Lots of alcohol, its a cold night sipper or something you should share with a few people. Good in small quantities, but after that it got to be somewhat challenging to finish.

Bottle: Poured a deep clear amber color ale with a nice large foamy head with good retention and good lacing. Aroma of wood and sickening sweetness doesn’t make for an interesting aroma. Taste is like crunching into an old scotch barrel that has bathed in sugar, i.e. not an interesting proposition. Body is about average with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. I finally drain poured half the bottle after I couldn’t take any more of the bad scotch ester and the sickening sweetness.

Presentation: Appears to be a 12oz. bottle, but the label says it is only 11.16 Fl. Oz. Batch: 096. Best Before: 19-03-16.

Appearance: It is a murky dull brown color. Really a bad looking beer, but when held up to the light and directly looked at from opposite the light source, it is a deep amber with intense ruby highlights, and actually quite bright. Odd that it could be so extreme with the appearance. A small white tan head forms and has excellent retention.

Smell: Wow, that is a ton of peat. It's like someone poured a glass Lagavulin or Ardbeg. It's got some high alcohol bite to it as well, burning the nostrils with the high alcohol content. It's just boozy, but not hot or solventy. That peat just overwhelms everything and not much else can be picked out from the aroma.

Taste: Definitely a lot more peat here as well. Deep and intense smokiness, but lacking the malt sweetness I normally associate with a barleywine. A brief but moderate bitterness lingers on the palate and a dry finish.

Mouthfeel: It's thin. Lacking that full bodied chewy malt character.

Overall: Just to preface, I love Islay single malts. Smokier the better. This beer however, it very lackluster. One dimensional with a lot of peat character. It's not that I don't like the peat, it is that there is no balance in the beer. Too much peat, barleywine character is weak and thin.

The colour is brown-red (50 EBC), the liquid is clear. The finger thick beige head sinks slowly leaving no lacing on the glass.

The smell is sweet-tart with some smokey notes. Band-aid, cream, gooseberries, red currants and some toffee. Quite a lot of alcohol.

The taste is very woody. It is dry with distinct high alcohols. Whiskey, salt and butterscotch. Quite a lot of oaked notes and some green fruits. Medium body. The aftertaste got hot alcohol, oak and whiskey flavours. The finish is rather smooth with wooden notes.

The carbonation is quite strong. The small bubbles are long lasting in the mouth. The liquid is dry and a bit harsh.

An experimental brew that probably was more fun to make than to drink (at least after a few years).

Pours a burgundy brown with an off white head that holds its own at the edges. Smells of peat and Scotch, that’s for sure. There’s some rich caramel in the background. Scotch, Scotch, Scotch. Peated smokiness. Some stinging hoppyness on the nose too, blended with the alcohol, it’s really quite menacing. Wow. This is challenging. It’s not entirely unpleasant, but it’s pretty rampantly "out there." On the palate, the Scotch is very prominent, fades a bit to let some caramel malt sweetness rise, then rises up again in a smoky, scotch-y finish. Notes of charcoal. The alcohol is barely felt or tasted, which is surprising at 11.5% ABV. Smoky, band-aid-y phenols. Overall, it tastes like an adulterated scotch. That being said, and in all seriousness, I’m not a big Scotch fan, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that I’m not digging this. However, I read the label, and in my American mind, the bit about being aged in Whisky barrels sounded good. Stupidly, I was expecting Bourbon Whiskey and I got Scotch Whisky… should have known,totally my error… I can’t ding this one too badly for that mistake on my part. I do have to give credit for being pretty well balanced despite the massive alcohol and the “unsuppressable” notes of Scotch Whisky with beer. That being said, I have not yet had a hoppy beer that tastes good with Scotch barrel aging. Efforts should probably stop. This is a pretty challenging beer. However, pairing with a strong blue cheese stuffed inside green olives made for a really nice experience. I don’t think I’d drink this again without that kind of pairing. On its own, it was just a bit too outlandish for me. The $12.99 for a 12-oz bottle just sets one up for disappointment as well.

Pours a lovely clear red colour, bright and vibrant, with a solid and frothily fine head of off-white. Quite a lucid and fine body, but the carbonation is incredibly fine and powdery when tilted. Lacing is tiny, intricate and persistent. Overall, it's a really gorgeous looking beer.

Nose is powerfully strong with peated smoke, but balanced gorgeously with a resiny, almost pine-like hoppy fragrance, that gives it depth and complexity. It's bright and pleasant, but with a depth that's quite extraordinary. Wow.

Taste is, also, just incredible. Pleasant rustic bounce from the smoke, giving it a pleasant dryness and a touch of Islay Scotch, before that lovely piney resin character comes through to balance and deepen the complexity. Furthermore, there are other, more subtle malt characters that come through later—biscuits, toasted grain and a dry spiciness almost like rye. It's incredibly complex, but all fused and tied to that smoky, peaty backbone. Feel is light and pleasant, but the lightness itself is astonishing in a beer this big.

Confronting but reassuring all in one, this is a beer that puts together some astonishingly good complexity into a whole that makes gorgeous sense and fabulous anarchy all in one. Absolutely fantastic.

With extreme flavors that favor Scotch whiskey, this Frankenstein of a beer shoves the palate to its brink with a bullyish display of earth, smoke, and bitterness.

The moderately hazy beer carries a firm mohogany hue with a dense and creamy head with a broken and speckled necklace of lace. Firm retention gives this a very formidable appearance.

High intensity of burnt rubber, rye, black peppercorn, scorched earth, sorghum, grapes, plumbs, cigar tobacco, weathered wood and moss create this meringue of scents that are surprisingly aromatic and perfumy despite being rustic and offensive.

The strong (oh, so strong) taste of peated whiskey, brown sugar, campfire smoke, lit cigars, ash, and the deeply embedded earthen hop balance gives a broad bitterness to the beer but continues to mudden the waters while a dull spiciness of rubber, pine sap, aniseed, rootbeer, and nail polish aptly describe the spicy, herbal, and sharpness that underlying complexities provide.

Full bodied and highly weighted because of the inherent character of creamy smoke and rich residual sweetness- the beer's reprieve rests in the astringency of char and ash with hot boozy alcohols and evaporation of wood tannin and strong powder.

But then how is it that so many unpleasant discriptor words pour out of the lexicon that this beer actually rates well? As offensive as the beer becomes to my beery palate, I feel that the peat influence of Scotch whiskeys plays out with proper balance, bold taste, and crazy-stupid levels of complexity.

12 oz. bottle poured into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours a dark brown color, slightly ruby in the light. Off-white head is small but dense; leaves a bit of lacing as well.

Smell: Earthy aroma, with some caramel and alcohol.

Taste: Strong caramel component. A little whisky-barrel action going on, but not much peat. Somewhat bitter finish and aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Generally smooth, with light carbonation and light- to medium-bodied.

Drinkability: Not much alcohol in the taste, thankfully, but somewhat tiring.

A decent barleywine - quite smooth, but the flavor becomes a bit tiring to me. Love the label, though!!

$12... Waaay too expensive... too expensive from the brewery and too much markup from the bottleshop.

Poured into my HotD goblet while boxing bottles for trade.... tan head with decent lacing and retention.... the brew is hazed light walnut.

Nose is full of headache acetone and burning rubber... smells like somebody put a palate of Converse on a campfire. Uncapped "Sharpie" markers .. Jesus... Really?

Flavor is making me squint... burning latex.... burning tires... Phenols that should NEVER be in any commercial beer... terrible superglue notes...

Christ.... seriously... I can handle Peaty Scotch, but this is a Train Wreck like nothing else. If you like sniffing Glue, then go at it.
