This beer is huge... Pours opaque obsidian with a frothy, mocha head. Smell is a mix of semi-sweet chocolate, soy sauce, tobacco and oak. Taste is ultra sweet coffee and cocoa... This beer makes my teeth hurt... So sticky and sweet - quite syrupy... This one was fun to try, but likely won't have it again. Batch 186: Drink by 8.6.22

330 ml bottle, from Vinmonopolet Verksgt., Stavanger. ABV is 15%. There is no explanation in the usual boastful commercial description why this beer is 15%, while all other Paradox versions are 10%. Have they actually added whisky to the beer (in addition to the whisky flavour imparted by the oak cask), or have they done some freeze distilling? Pitch black colour, large to moderate tan head. Strong and impressive aroma of whisky cask, with notes of both bourbon and Scotch, vanilla / oak, dark chocolate and liquorice, also sweetish notes of malts, hints of tar and seaside. The flavour has a solid malty sweetness, notes of molasses, chocolate, vanilla, Scotch whisky (with fairly moderate smokey notes). Moderate hops and peat smoke in the aftertaste. The alcohol is well hidden.

The colour is brown black, the low golden head disappears quickly. Some lacing and alcohol curtains on the glass.
The smell is smooth with sharp alcohol. Sweet roasted malt, some burnt flavours. Dark chocolate, old dark rum, raisins and whiskey. Hints of oak wood and Madeira.
The taste is intense: The first note is of sweet dark chocolate, but it is quickly replaced with bitter-dry salty flavours of liquorice, rum, oak barrels and coffee candy. Medium body. The alcohol grows in the aftertaste, it become hot like a cheap brandy. The sweetness returns, with dried apricots and raisins. Dry notes of roasted malts, orange peel and a hint of sweet lemon candy. The long dry finish got candy-like sweetness, hints of oranges and prunes.
The carbonation is light, the small relatively fresh bubbles are long-lived. The liquid is a bit thick and harsh.
After almost 8 years, this intense beer was not as oxidized as I had expected. It is quite smooth yet there are some oddities here and there (especially the sharp sweetness).

Jet; whisky, tar, meat, deep honey, sticky toffee pudding; cocoa syrup, treacle cake, whisky chocolates, honeycomb + long Scotch notes, coffee echoes; full, round, dead smooth.

Chocolate, cakey malts - whisky isn’t even the most interesting thing here (though it is definitely there!) I don’t know how this has some many sweet flavour components yet isn’t at all cloying. Age has been very kind to this bottle. Super deep, round, and mature.

Wow 15%!!! It's like candy! Sweet caramel, toffee, raisins, light molasses and candy apples dominate. This is followed up with notes of vanilla, oak and scotch whiskey. It finishes warm and boozy with a sticky heavy feeling.

Quality brew.
Great butterscotch and booze smell, chocolate and a little smoke too.
Black pour, no head to speak of just whispy red/brown carbonation bubbles.
Super sweet, super boozy, toffee and butterscotch, malt and the slightest barrel character. Not much balance but great character.
Thin mouth feel. No slick oily feel.

I have been cellaring this for almost 4 years. Today is the day...
Deep black color with a very thin dark caramel head that vanishes quickly.
Nice aroma with notes of licorice, cola, mild whiskey, lots of dark fruits, dark chocolate, cold coffee and Port wine. Alcohol is definitely not very present in the nose.
Intense flavor with notes of cola, dark fruits, roasted malt, cocoa, licorice, lots of Port wine, a bit of peat, charred wood, some whiskey, restrained booze and vanilla. Dry aftertaste with lingering roasted, alcoholic and dark fruit notes. Bitterness is not intense.
Liquorish body with mild carbonation. Alcohol of 15% feels much lower.
Aging mellowed its hops and made it more vinous. Jura whiskey casks only gave it a complimentary flavor; it was not overly predominant. It is intense, but still very much English. I am under the impression that I liked much more the Paradox Isle of Arran version that felt more vibrant, though hard to compare given it was younger.
