Style: American Pale Ale (APA)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 3.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Formerly Dead Pony Club and Dead Pony

This Californian Pale Ale packs a huge hoppy punch. A 21st century low amplitude, high voltage hop hit. Some people say slow is good. We believe fast is better. Being shot from a Hoppy Howitzer beats the hell out of trotting round a submissive paddock. That's why the internal combustion engine got mounted onto two wheels. Screw down the throttle and listen for that dull banshee howl floating back from those malted mufflers. Drink fast, live fast, sleep late and rip it up down empty streets. This pale ale is chopped, tuned and ready to roll. Fuel up and hold tight, this little thoroughbred kicks like a mule. Perfect for drinking by the bottle, case or even keg.

I went to the new Canal Winchester site a few weeks ago for dinner, and now the first of the brews from down there are showing up in Northern Ohio. Nice.

This one pours a deep golden color with an odd head that is very weak. The aroma is wonderful. Hops, mostly, with other things mingling in there.

The taste is expectedly dry, but it works for this style. The aftertaste is also mostly just bitter, but there is pretty good balance. For as light a brew as this is, this is pretty enjoyable.

Recommended for when you want to drink all day.

330 ml bottle, Tesco's, Bristol - Pours clear amber with a medium white foamy head. Medium carbonation. Nice lacing. Aroma - Citrus to the fore - grapefruit/orange. Taste - Citrus hoppy front - grapefruit, malty overtones, light resin, crisp bitter finish. Not a heavy hitter but nothing wrong here. Solid session APA.

33cl bottle from the local supermarket (yay!). Clear amber pour with a thin white head. Smells of tropical fruit, citrus and honey. Bitter and refreshing, with the same taste notes as the aroma, though toned down quite a bit.

A 330ml bottle with a BB of July 2013. Picked up from a supermarket a little while back. Described as a Californian pale ale; no idea how they picked the moniker for this one.

Poured into a tulip pint glass. A light orange-amber hue with medium carbonation. Yields a large head of creamy white foam that lasts for a few minutes before reducing to a persistant surface layer. Aroma of sweet caramel malt with hoppy overtones; notes of grapefruit, orange rind, mango, pine, citrus and hints of tropical fruit. Smells lovely.

Tastes of caramel malt with a hoppy character and a clean bitter finish. Notes of grapefruit, orange, citrus, pine, mango, tropical fruit and stewed hops. Slightly sweet, though the malt seems a bit underpowered. A crisp, strident bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and tingly, but rather thin and watery. Quite astringent, with an aftertaste of bitter aromatic hops and subtle malt.

Pretty good and certainly tasty. Smells great; lots of juicy hop notes mingling together in delicious harmony. The flavour seems a tad unbalanced in favour of hops - the malt could benefit from being beefed up. The body is also lacklustre; too thin and insubstantial. However, it's a solid effort for a relatively low ABV brew and it still has good drinkability. I could see this becoming a regular drinking beer if the price/availability were right. Worth sampling if you come across it.

On tap at the Dundee BrewDog pub.
Clear copper colored body with a good head.
Aroma: pungent but pleasing mix of fruity and resinous hopst.
The hops are also quite pronounced in tasting, but this has mild bitterness,
Near medium body with medium carbonation.
O: wow, this is a great session APA for hop heads! It has a load of hop aroma and flavor; you'll think you are drinking an IPA. Very impressive: a big beer at 3.8%.
