Style: Russian Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Welcome to the world of Cocoa Psycho, a liquid dimension where pure indulgence reigns.

Originally brewed some 250 years ago to celebrate the Russian Royal Family, this 10% Imperial Russian stout borrows from the decadence of the time with its extravagantly smooth blend of crushed coffee beans, cocoa nibs and dark malts.

But continue to dig a little deeper, past the infusions of vanilla pods and toasted oak chips, and eventually you'll come face-to-face with the madness required to make this beer; a kind of insanity that would have made Rasputin himself proud.

To fully unleash the aromas and bittersweet luxury of this stout, we recommend drinking it from a stemmed beer glass before taking a sledgehammer to a Faberge Egg.

330ml bottle poured into a snifter.

Pitch opaque black in color with rather thick dark tan head that stays with pretty good retention, it gradually dissipates to a lasting bubble sheet atop and leaves some lacing patch and spot here and there.

In a nose, it is so rich with notes of coffee, cocoa, dark chocolate, vanilla, burnt sugar, charred nut, dark bread, toasted wood, licorice, and mild sweetness while hop provides its subtle earth and spice to support.

Sweetness upfront with notes of vanilla and burnt sugar, it follows by a presence of dark malt with roasted flavor along with toasted wood, cocoa, dark chocolate, and coffee. Dark bread covers as a base of the flavor structure while there is also some spice of licorice and alcohol at the almost end. Hop is there at the end and in the aftertaste with notes of some earthiness and citrus. Bitterness comes from both roasted malt and hop (more from roasted malt).

The body is full with high viscosity and sticky yet chewy mouthfeel. The feeling is so smooth and well-rounded with rather low carbonation that is proper to carry all the things well. Finish is very pleasant and dry.

This Stout is big and intense with great profile of cocoa and coffee as well as roasted malt and toasted wood. Alcohol is there but it comes in style, not so sharp and surprisingly easy to drink. Great sipper.

11.2oz bottle, best before date of 9/24/19, batch #363. Pours jet black with a smaller sized dark brown head. Smells of roasted malt, char, earthy hops, cocoa, and some dark fruit; somewhat abrasive. The taste is rounder with roasted malt and hops followed by a nice blend of cocoa, dark fruit, vanilla, coffee, and char. Just a hint of sweetness and good amount of dryness; surprisingly refreshing. Smooth mouthfeel and above average body. Although the smell is somewhat abrasive, the flavors really blend well and have good complexity. Good example of a RIS.

Enjoyed on tap at the Birdsall House in Peekskill, NY

Pours damn near to black, under a very dark, rich and creamy mocha head that leaves nice solid rings of sturdy lacing with every sip.

Sweet mocha/chocolate/dark grains nose

On the palate, waves of chocolate, malt balls and again smooth and flavorful dark grains.

10% well masked, super smooth, dangerously delicious and easy drinking.

Quality RIS-happy to get to savor it on tap...

Pitch black pour, very thick-looking. Velvety head, dark brown, with nice retention - it looks perfect, for a RIS. Smells of cocoa and dark chocolate, roasted malts and a bit of bourbon. The taste follows the same notes, but overall is a bit mellow - there isn't anything that stands out, not bitterness, not sweetness, not even alcohol.

Extremely dark beer, with an extremely dark foam. The aroma is dominated by a roasted character, metallic and acidic but not in a violent way. Coffee, cocoa and a bit of bacon. The taste is on the same notes, with long finish, persistent on the bacon and coffee notes. Very chewy and thick. Overall a nice beer.

12 oz bottle poured into Spiegelau glass

A: pure night with no moon or stars in a glass, held ip to light not a drop escapes the abyss. little very chocolatey head dissipates to nothing.

S: lot of chocolate and licorice

T: Big chocolate, deep almost acidic roast maybe thats the coffee its ver acidic almost like burnt expresso, rich malts, anise

M: fairly full feel but not that creamy

O: this is a big stout but not a very amazing one I thought the vanilla or coffee would stand out neither did. Its just an ok stout, boozy and very acidic.
