Wow looking at some of the past reviews I'm thinking they may have straightened things out a bit. I mean it's a pub atmosphere so don't go looking for a chain vibe or any upscale food. I think the vibe is kind of cool with the tree in the middle of the main room. The place is expansive. There are little booths and corners and several different rooms - l liked that. The main thing here is the draft selection. If you're a craft enthusiast you won't be let down - not from my multiple experiences here. I love the fact you can get a tasting rack of 4 different brews at a reasonable price. Then they usually have a cask selection and some unique and rare offerings. Service is OK. Food is what you would expect - not bad. The key here is don't go on a Saturday/Sunday during school weekend visits for URI or you will not be happy.

This is a dive bar with great food. The people complaining about gluten free options sound like the outraged vegans that come into my butcher shop wanting to be served. Its a beer bar (gluten) that serves delicious pizza (more gluten) and great burgers and sammies (still more gluten). I love Mews. I'm from Bonnet but Iive out of town and Mews is always on the must have list. My advice to the haters is to check out the extensive salad list. (The last person that made a big stink in my place about gluten free options washed his meal down with a wheat beer.)

Neat place that had at least three separate kind of a maze getting through. There were dollar bills with writing stabled all over the bar/tavern area....we place on whilst there...."Les is a shitty putter, but a great Dude". Quality of beer and food....fantastic. The service was great and friendly. There were a plethora of beer and food options. The food was great....had wings and pastrami sandwich.

Some staff knows their stuff, most don't. The vibe is great when not busy, but sometimes is a very busy college bar. There are 69 beers on tap, but any beer drinker with any experience won't find too much of interest.

But mostly...the beers are in bad shape. Dirty lines, stale beer. I've had so many beers I like here and they tasted terrible. Simple food is good, anything more advanced is guaranteed to fall way short (though properly cooked).

I've come here for YEARS. I come back regularly to visit family and have finally made the decision to stop coming, just now. Sad really. I think I kept coming for years out of loyalty.

Craft beer drinker don't need to make the trip here.

For a place that has so many taps the selection was worse than I could have ever anticipated. If you're looking for 5 lines of Sam Adams, DFH 60, SN PA, narragansett, yuengling, blue moon, goose island, harpoon, Guinness, clown shoes, etc. than this place is for you. Don't get me wrong, they are all great beers, but for a place that prides itself on craft I was hoping that a good % of the lines would be from smaller/local breweries, or small batch/one offs from larger breweries. Neither of which were offered at this place.
Service was pretty good, food was actually really good, decor was dollar bills? Not really my thing but either is Sam Adams Rebel IPA.

Like previously mentioned, dollar bills adorn just about every square inch of the ceiling. Tap selection (60 or so taps) is pretty good. I had a Whalers' East Coast IPA and a fish and chips. Service was meh at best. Food was really good, actually and the brews were nice.

Sprawling popular tavern/ restaurant in downtown Wakefield. The place has a road house/ frat house rowdy vibe. Downstairs is a rather loud U-shaped bar that seats about 15 and about a dozen booths around the perimeter. The wall and ceiling are covered with numerious autographed dollar Bill's. The upstairs dining area is on a few different levels with both tables and booths and another small bar that seats about 8. Around 40 well assorted beers on tap, a great selection of local and a few nation brand. Fast, friendly service. Food is solid pub fare at a reasonable price. Great place to have a bite with friends.

Atmosphere: typical low-quality pub, dollar bills all over the place, small-ish TVs displaying sports. Nothing bad, by any means whatsoever.

Quality: some very, very good brews. When I visited, they had Lagunitas Maximus on cask, and some other very good brews. You're not going to find rare Belgians, but what they have is pretty solid. I had a burger which was good but not great, and a buffalo dip with tortilla chips that was excellent. I have heard they have wood-fired pizza that is excellent, but I can't vouch for it.

Service was fine; no complaints, but no excess praise.

Selection is where this place shines. 69 beers on tap, with, yes, a fair number of macros, but a lot of good craft. Local beers (well, MA; close enough), to Cali brews, and all around; good deal.

This is the first place I've reviewed where I felt "inexpensive" was appropriate. Food was reasonably priced, but let's go farther than that:
-$4 8oz cask pours.
-$3 specials (which, in this case, included Enjoy By 6 days past its date; yes, please - I will pay $3 all day long!).
-3$ drafts during happy hour (so I've heard).

Really solid place to visit. It's in a spot fairly remote from other good craft beer bars, in my limited experience with the area.

To anyone with Celiac, food allergies, sensitivities or if you have a someone you care about with special dietary needs that you want to support, please be aware that this restaurant is not the place for you. Mews Tavern has added gluten free items to its menu. Although you will be reassured these items are gluten free and that they understand cross contamination, take great caution in trusting this. For all of us who deal with digestive issues we know how exciting it is to find new menu items and a place you can feel confident you will not get sick after eating. This is not the place! I not only got the sickest I have been since my diagnosis, upon confronting the General Manager it was taken very lightly. I thought the Owner should and would want to be made aware so as to help him make sure his staff understood the severity of the issue, learn to educate them and how to hopefully prevent any further incidents. His response…I trust my staff…They said they followed all of the correct procedures…I am not going to apologize to you. We all know accidents happen when dealing with these kinds of dietary situations. He couldn’t undo the damage that was done but I do believe how you handle the matter afterwards is also important. I was greatly mistaken in my thoughts that he might want to become aware of this, learn and have his staff become more educated.

This is an OK place. A little boisterous for me, but depends on the timing. Food is always halfway decent, nothing particularly outstanding. They do have the sampler racks, but the beer selection is kind of pedestrian and I have never seen it change much. Used to be a regular stop when one of my kids was at URI, but wouldn’t drive the hour and a half just to go here. Waitstaff could be a little snotty at times. Since wife and I are older, we noticed it more than the average college kid. Don’t love it, don’t hate it.

Atmosphere: The best part of the Mews is easily the atmosphere. There are now five different sections to hang out. A tap room bar in the bottom level, covered in decorated one dollar bills. The normal dining room, with a giant tree in the middle (pretty funky, cool vibe). The bar to the side next to the pizza oven. A new "game/sports room," where there are even more televisions and some games to play. And lastly, the "Celtic" bar upstairs where they often play live acoustic music. Some may complain of a "college" vibe in some places, but with five different sections to choose from, there are plenty tables that are quieter.

Quality and Service: Biggest complaint: this place needs to clean their tap lines. It's a real shame that when a new beer is on tap that I am hesitant to order, because I fear THE TAP LINES ARE DIRTY. In addition to this, there have been numerous times where I have been served the wrong beer. The staff is friendly, no doubt, but they aren't quite attentive as a whole. Their beer knowledge is rather limited (though there are a couple of really good servers that are attentive and know their stuff). Unfortunately, not all of the staff is friendly, many of the doormen to the 21+ sections are miserable (I'd prefer you to not make remarks about the people I am with behind their backs, or just not at all) and really drag down the fun atmosphere that the restaurant is pushing for.

Selection: "69 Microbrews on tap" is not exactly accurate, there are plenty of BMC quality beers on tap, but most are "true micros." A huge selection from New England (now dwindling), but numerous offering from Rogue, Flying Dog, Peak Organic, Oskar Blues, and Brooklyn to name a few. A lot of the beers are not that special and can find in many different places, but they have some "rarer" stuff on tap from time to time (limited releases from breweries in the north east).

Food: Pretty good. I have never been disappointed. The wings and boneless wings are great, good pizza, delicious apps. Lots of specials every day.

Value: Everything is definitely more expensive than it should be. They have some daily beer specials, but overall, the pints are rather pricey. Expect to pay at least four dollars and change for a mediocre beer. The beers dubbed "rare" (which can be found fairly easily elsewhere) are not worth purchasing, upward to $7 and more a pint, for something like the Harpoon 100 barrel series(again, served through dirty tap lines). The food is decent, and the portions aren't bad, but is also overpriced.

Bottom line: I've been going here for years and like it alot as a college student (for the atmosphere, not the prices), but if I were going here for a first time, I would be incredibly disappointed. Still, with all the problems, it's the only place south of Providence to get a pint, and if any place could rival it, I would probably jump ship in a heartbeat. The biggest drawback for a beer enthusiast would have to be the terrible job keeping their tap lines clean. Beers are often off-tasting, and that is simply unacceptable for a beer bar that boasts such a big selection.

Mew's is literally the only place worth visiting in southern Rhode Island, and it's the only place, and I mean the only place, with a half-decent beer selection.

The food has never been anything short of good to really good. I have no complaints there.

The service really kills the place. Out of the dozen or so visits, I've had good service twice at most. More often than not I find myself wanting another beer or another glass of water, and even after flipping my Got Beer/Need Beer sign I find no server.

The beer selection is nothing to write home about, but it as some gems from time to time. There is a premium placed on what they call "Rare" beers. These range from Otter Creek's Russian Imperial to Stone's Arrogant Bastard. Sure, some of these are more rare than others, but getting charged a premium for Arrogant Bastard just feels wrong.

All in all, Mew's has great food and decent enough service if you can find your way to the bar. It's often crowded with a bunch of URI students, especially on weekends, but there are three floors to find a place to be. It's a great layout and a bit quirky. It's definitely worth the visit if you find yourself in the area.

I have been to Mews about a dozen times now, but my patronage is mostly due to the fact that there are no other bar destinations in southern RI (at least that I have learned about in the past year). As a graduate student at URI, I almost feel obligated to go.

Overall, in regard to the beer I would describe the Mews experience as "frustrating" rather than straight-up "disappointing." The owners are clearly proud of their 69 taps. You can even buy this point of pride on a t-shirt. However, the selection is poor. If you are looking for something like Blue Moon, this may be paradise. But for everyone else, these beers are remarkably common and uninteresting. "Rare" beers include stuff like Arrogant Bastard, and the turnaround is very slow. If you see a beer at the Mews, it will probably stay there for a few months. The freshness is definitely questionable.

But what about the restaurant aside from the beer? The food is actually really good. The pizza, in fact, is excellent. Unfortunately, the service, on average, is crappy. While there are some excellent waiters, most of the wait staff is cranky and unhelpful. The atmosphere is generally interesting. Mews itself is somewhat of a Frankenstein monster, with a number of different, vaguely connected parts. It's genuinely interesting to explore.

Mews is worth a trip, but only if you keep your beer expectations low.

Update (from my most recent experience on 11/12/11):

I originally gave this a C- overall, and I'm lowering the score. I swear that this place is getting worse. I had to wait over a half hour to get a table, and when I sat down, there were multiple empty tables. The service was bad. The food prices are more expensive, the beer selection was even more mediocre, and they don't even make large pizzas anymore. The beer I had was very old tasting (not good for an IPA). This place is the only place around, and it knows it - it's like they aren't even trying to be a good destination.

A. Mews has couple of different rooms. The lower room has 1 dollar bills that are glued to the ceiling and have signatures and quotes on it. The upper room has this a tree in the center that has graffiti all over it and a bike and canoe as well.

Q. The beer was fresh.

S. Waitress and bar tender were attentive and helpful.

S. They have 69 Draughts on tap. 4 or 5 are ciders and couple of sodas are included in the 69 Draughts. 10-15 good list selection but you have to go there at the right time because the better selections are usually out. Rest are macro brews.

F. It is always fresh and tasteful.

V. Prices for beer and food was good.

Mews is a great place for the beginner beer geek. It would be better if the selection was always available but the food makes it a worth while spot.

Visited on 10/9/2010 for the first time. It's a large building with several different sections, a large dining area, a regular bar area ("The Tavern") and another pub upstairs ("The Celtic Pub"). 69 beers on-tap and they have T-shirts with the slogan "No Crap On-Tap". Although there weren't any beers from the American Adjunct Lager category on-tap and the only Light Lager on-tap was Sam Adams Light, I did find some beer that I would classify as crap. However, overall the selection on-tap was very good and quite diverse to accommodate every type of beer-drinker and taste. Service was very prompt and friendly. The food was good, but I only got chicken fingers as I had eaten a lot earlier in the day and my wife just got a burger, but the food menu seemed to be just as diverse and all-encompassing as the beer menu. The prices were just slightly more expensive than most places but given the area, it didn't surprise me. Overall, it's an excellent beer bar that I would certainly visit again when I'm in the area.

You would think a beer bar down in 'gansett would be a good time but every time I go it's meh. I don't know how they do it but they have 69 taps and 50 of them are BMC's/Inbev, and the rest arn't all that special. They had Arrogant Bastard and Dead Guy under their "rare selections" menu, what? For a beer bar no one, owner included apparently, knows crap about beer. The only time I've ever been impressed was one time they had Triple Bag on tap. I don't know how they got a hold of that but it must have been a mistake. 90% loud mouth obnoxious college kids (which I can't blame them for due to the area). The bartenders are unfriendly, unhelpful and unknowledgeable. The only good thing there is the food and the fact that it's 5000 square feet of labyrinth like hallways, bars and dining rooms which will keep you entertained and lost for about 20 min. I only go if I'm in the area and want some decent food and hopefully a decent craft beer. Not worth a drive.

I've been to Mews maybe five times over the past 5 years. Just went this weekend after a URI basketball game. The beer selection can't be beat in South County. 69 on tap. Though most of the beers are ones that aren't rare or hard to find. One or two Belgian taps at the most (Stella and Leffe Brown). They do have Brew 69, which is a beer made my Magic Hat for only the Mews Tavern. They did have a couple offerings from Stone and Weihenstephan. I had a few Paulaner Weissbiers.
The place is huge. There are basically four sections. Brick oven pizza bar area, pub/tavern area, dining area with one large tree growing in the middle and the upstairs lounge with a huge list of scotch. We almost always hang out in the pub area. Low ceiling, dark with lots of wood. I find the food to be good, but the prices are a little high.
This is a place to check out while in South County.

I want to be clear on why I give a 2 on service. Once I was seated, the service was actually awesome. I waited for over an hour because V.I.P.s were getting served 2 for 1 burgers and the kitchen was backed up? Over 6 people chucked their pagers back at the hostess and left for the same reason. I, however, am patient and can stand waiting for something if I travel a decent distance for it and can maintain the attention of the party I'm with with some decent conversation. I consider the amount of time to seat a party as part of service.

Once we sat down, things started rolling quickly and wonderfully. We all had burgers and they were prepared correctly and delicious. The beer selection is huge (69) and I quickly found a porter on nitro to try first. The cold, windy night made it perfect. I then moved on to an extra pale ale and enjoyed that as well. If you go here and don't find anything to drink, you have a problem. They have over 40 tequilas, over 200 scotches and multiple whiskeys.

Overall, the selection is great, the prices are definitely reasonable and the atmosphere is wonderful. The only thing to be aware of is the undermining you have to do to beat the wait, if that's what you choose to do. Perhaps I'm just being grumpy and I should become a V.I.P. so I can beat the crowd next In any event, that won't keep me from coming back, but I think it should be looked at from a service perspective by management.

If you are looking for variety, this place has the best beer selection in southern RI. Great old colonial building with a confusing, but enjoyable setup, bars at all ends of the place. Parking is OK except on the weekends, where you may have to improvise (and deal with annoying college kids). The food is exceptional for a pub, I love their burgers and sandwiches and the prices are very reasonable. Service adequate, though most of the waittresses are college students from URI, so don't expect many beer recommendations.

The beer menu claims 69 brews on tap but quite a few are American macros (Bud, Miller) and widely available European selections (Bass, Guiness, Smithwicks, Stella). However they do have some great regional choices from Magic Hat, Harpoon, and Blue Point. Great whiskey and martini menu's also. Thumbs up.

Visited the Mews as part of our annual summer vacation ritual when we stay in Narragansett. The Mews is a pretty large establishment with a bar area, restaurant area and a now an Irish Pub (must have been the martini bar formerly). My wife and I stayed in the bar, although the pub had live Irish music that evening. Lots of wood and somewhat dimly lit, with an eclectic mix of alt rock playing in the background. The bar was pretty crowded by the time we arrived at 7:30. Most likely a college bar during the school year, but a fairly young scene nonetheless comprised of locals and vacationers in the bar area (not too many couples) and families in the dining room. I know they are known for 69 draughts, but the beer menu I liberated had 67; 2 of which were soft drinks and 4 of which were ciders. The list wasn't entirely consistent with the website, but it was pretty close. A fair selection of macros on tap (Miller, Heineken, Guiness, Harp, Bass, Smithwicks, Amstel Light. Additional draft selection tended to focus on the lighter side of things, as well as IPAs. Highlights included Stone Arrogant Bastard and Smoked Porter, two German weissbiers (Weihenstephan & Franziskaner), as well as a couple from Paper City. Unfortunately, the Belgian selection was limited to Stella & Leffe Blonde. Also, all beers were served in standard pints. The food was okay, but somewhat on the pricey side ($12 for a plate of nachos). Service was excellent; never had a dry pint. The average price of my selections (Weihenstephan Hefe-Weissbier, Hoegarden White & Hobgoblin) was about $5.25; however, there were a few draft specials running. Also of note is that the Mews seems to have a substantial scotch selection (over 200, so says the website). There's definitely something for everyone, so definitely worth checking out if you are in the South County area.

I visited this place on a Friday night while on vacation. Seems like an upscale college bar. I had 2 of the four beer samplers and you can chose from any of the 69 beers on tap. I tried mostly local beers and enjoyed the majority of them. Dining room was packed and all of the customers looked happy to be there. Service was good I never had to wait long for someone to help me. I had walked in and taken the first empty seats at the bar near the wood burning pizza oven and was confused because I only saw about ten taps. Then I was told about the main bar where all the taps are located. Walked over after dinner and this was a little more college atmosphere with people mainly drinking and 70's rock music playing. I would like to come back and try more of the beer and food sometime.

if i went to school in the area and this was my bar i would have been so excited i would have flunked out of school just to stay...nice warm atmosphere in a crazy giant wooden building built around a tree with not only several small compartments but several different types of bars and restaurants. i love it when places do that....a very large tap selection of great american craft beers. some imports like boddingtons, peroni, weinstephan but that was about it...kinda a bummer as i think they could get some great belgian in there and really give it that extra kick in the pants to be world class. it is a college bar which can be a bummer for a middle ager like myself but whatever i love animal house so its ok. bartender was this charming short blonde bomb shell with an amazing voice to boot. super friendly with knowledge of the beer. if you are in south county it is certainly worth stopping by.
