Fizzy tan head. Fades away quickly. Dark brown color. A lot of caramel and toffee with chocolate and light vanilla. Bourbon and oak are present but light which is probably best for the base beer. Enjoyable, but light bodied.
Nothing to go crazy about.

Pours like Coca~Cola with a rootbeer head that is thick, but only lasts about 40 seconds then completely falls to a 3 mm ring.
Nose is chocolate, coffee, vanilla, toffee, oatmeal and caramel with the faintest hint of bourbon.
Flavors follow the nose exactly.
These barrels must have been used many times before this batch was racked into them.
Medium mouthfeel is slightly creamy with a short, but thirst quenching finish.
It tastes good but leaves one wandering what it would be like with a slightly higher O.G. and more bourbon.
I see this being a good spring "lawnmower" stout.

Smells rich with chocolate, cocao nibs, roasted malts, and tails off into faint vanilla bean sweetness with minimal bourbon barrel aroma.

On the tongue, the bourbon barrel aged sourness comes through immediately and covers up the thick, rich chocolate found in the aroma. There's some dark roasted malt and bitter black coffee in the finish.

The feel is a little on the thin side, not unlike the non-barrel aged Buffalo Sweat.

After drinking half of the beer, the tan head has recedes to nothing but a small collar of soda-like bubbles with no lacing. The body is a dark chocolate or soda color.

Overall: Great aroma with little bourbon, the taste is the opposite while everything about this beer is a bit thin. Having said all of that, it's easily drinkable for someone like me who stays away from extremely high ABV barrel aged beers.

Moderately better than non-BA buffalo sweat, but the base beer is nice, so this is too. I'd say slightly thicker and sweeter than its non-BA brother.

I wasn't a big fan, and much preferred the original BS and Vanilla Bean version. The lighter, sweet stout gets overwhelmed by the barrels. I do enjoy barrel aged browns, so it's not that I think every barrel aged beer needs to be 14% abv. But I would prefer a more roast-heavy stout, especially if it is a sweet stout with this level of barrel character.

Otherwise, no off flavors or clear brewing flaws. Just not a great combination, and not an improvement to the original beer in my opinion. This is one I probably won't grab again.

Pours with weak carbonation. Color is good for a stout but mouthfeel hurts this beer a little. Seems as thin as a German black beer, not like a regular stout. But the taste is really good! Coffee, chocolate, vanilla, bourbon. A lot is going on here. If this was bottled I would maybe age it a year and see what happens? Still well worth buying over some really lame barrel aged beers out there.

I enjoyed this beer but it was not what I was thinking it would be.

Bourbon barrel notes are faint....what is not faint is a rich java like aroma and flavor which I did not expect....some cocoa evident....

Body is not textured like I'd expect an oatmeal stout to be..kind of slick and cola like...no head at all...looks like a cola in the glass.

All in all an ok beer but well short of what I expected.

Like other recent reviews, I wanted more from this one. Poured a nice dark brown with generous off-white head, but that head disappears without a trace pretty quickly into, well, nothing. Smell is chocolate, malt, and faint trace of bourbon. Taste is exactly what someone said below--flat cola with a hint of bourbon. Mouth is thin and flat. Maybe I got an off can here (8/2015) and I'll revisit if the other 3 are better. But for now, I'm rather bummed about this beer...

Got to say I was let down a bit by this offering, maybe I was looking for a little more from this brand. Looked just OK and the aroma was almost nothing, had a nice flavor with just enough Bourbon to make it stand out but not over power a Cream Stout. As it warms the flavors expand and gain depth but the aroma never comes around, still a good brew and something to try if you like this style.

Pours a dark cola color with minimal head and no lacing. Smells like the faintest whiff of bourbon and slight chocolate. Tastes like a flat cola with the tiniest splash of bourbon poured in. This beer is so thin it would need to run around in the shower to get wet. Average at its best and not worth the $12 a 4 pack price for sure.

Pours black with a 1 finger head which fades quickly. The aroma has roasted malt, cocoa, vanilla, chocolate, and bourbon.

Tastes exactly like it smells. The bourbon is there, but is not the dominant taste, or aroma. At 7 % abv, I wouldn't expect to be very strong. I do like what it adds to the beer.

Medium bodied with low carbonation. Very easy to drink. I enjoyed this beer a lot, and recommend it.

Pours an effervescent mahogany with a thumb of tan head. Zero head retention & lacing

S: Vanilla, carob, & faint Bourbon oakyness as well.

T: Follows the nose, creaminess & cinnamon up front. Nice lactic notes as this warms, a little caramel as well, some woody notes, a little mocha flavor too. Finishes a little dry, with nice lactic acidity & caramel

MF: Medium body, slight carbonation

Drinks pretty easy, wish this had a little more barrel, plus I would I prefer this be at least 9% ABV. Still worth picking up

Tallgrass. Good stuff. Been waiting for this one to appear & after a month, the truck that evidently got lost somewhere in Iowa finally made it. Weird little can that looks odd next to its unbarreled bro.

The pour is black & flatter than Keneau Reeves acting (that is acting, right? He’s not really that dull - right?). The nose is sweet vanilla, but light on both. Tame.

Buffalo Sweat - Bourbon Barrel Aged: who the hell came up with the name of this beer? Why not Buffalo Breast Milk, or Buffalo Anal Drip? Anyways. This has a nice lactose shell with a sweet, smooth follow-through. The barrel is discernable mid-palate as very light vanilla, but no apparent bourbon. Lovely mouthfeel & sehr easy to trinken.

Good, solid stout, but the barrel is lacking to the point of being the Invisible Man. Tallgrass doesn’t seem to quite have this whole barrel thing down yet (see also: Wooden Rooster).

Tall grass Bourbon Barrel Buffalo Sweat. Explorer Series Bourbon Barrel-aged Oatmeal Milk Stout. Brewed and canned by Tallgrass Brwery, Manhattan, Kansas.

Nearly solid blackness, with slivers of crimson highlights peeking through. Smallish, then gone head.

Vanilla in the nose, followed by cocoa. Light roast. Big smooth. Velvety, chocolatey goodness.

In the mouth, it’s much more deliciousness. Here’s where the bourbon barrel delivers it’s goods. Whiskey does it’s stuff, with vanilla back on the scene, and a cream, oatmeal mouthfeel that can’t be beat. Full body, long, malty, bourbon-y finish.

This is a good one. Go drink it.

This looks and smells decent. It is pretty thin, especially the mouthfeel. Hardly any Bourbon to this. Mine is almost on the fruity/sour side. Dare I say on the verge of infection? Glad I split a 4-pack. Wow be sad having 3 more of these in the fridge.

Roasted coffee beans with a hint of chocolate on the nose. Smooth bourbon and marshmallow initially then fades to a bitter coffee ground. I enjoy it but not the best value imo. Super thin mouth feel

Look - murky brown with a thin khaki head. Very little retention, almost no lace.
Smell - brown sugar oatmeal mixed with cocoa. Slight bourbon presence.
Taste - follows the nose with the cocoa becoming a bit more prominent.
Feel - medium body but still feels rather thin. Low amount of carbonation
Overall - the aroma of this beer was the best thing. A little too thin on the body for me although the flavors were nice.

First had poured from 12-oz. can into faceted mug. Very disappointed Tallgrass ditched its standard pint can for this release, which does what too much bourbon-barrel aging fails to do: improve the original beer.

Can pour. Kicks up a frothy tan head which disappears within a minute. No discernible aroma except for a slight waft of cocoa. The mouthfeel is quite thin as might be expected - given the base beer. The barrel aging gives this just a light lick of booze. This brings to mind an alcoholic cola or one of those chocolates filled with whisky that your dad used to get at Christmas.

Pours pitch black with a 1 finger head that doesn't last long and leaves zero lacing. It has lots of sweet oatmeal on the nose with the bourbon playing a secondary role. This has a pretty light bourbon taste but what I really like about it is that the underlying oatmeal stout is great and only enhanced by the barrel. I think this deserves a slightly higher rating than it has right now. I enjoyed this brew.

L (4.25) - Nice dark stout beer with a thin tan head
S (4.5) - Great aromas. Nice roasty smell with a bit of bourbon. Really makes me want to drink it up!
T (4.25) - Tastes good. I would expect a little more bourbon taste, but maybe subtlety is what they're going for. Not sure I've had regular Buffalo Sweat, but it seems good. Not a terribly complex flavor, more simple, but solid.
F (4) - A little thinner mouthfeel than I'd like. Carb is about right for the style
O (4.25) - Not quite sure how to feel about this. It's good, but it's not a BCBS or those types of beers. But it is a nice stout, with a bit of oak and bourbon, easily available in cans. Winner!

I had lowered my expectations for this based on reviews and comments from fellow BAs. Overall, I think this is getting dinged for its classification as an american stout rather than porter. It is thin in the body, but that is my biggest complaint. The barrel comes through quite a bit, really, in the form of some oaky marshmallow flavor. There is a lot of hazelnut and vanilla on the nose. Chocolate as well. The flavor is bigger than I expected with marshmallow vanilla sweetness up front, balanced by bitter chocolate and roasty hazelnut flavor in the back. It strikes a nice balance between a lot of flavor and dangerously drinkable. As stated before, the mouthfeel is thin, but I don't find it detracts much from this brew.

Tl;dr: This is very, very tasty. Don't expect a lot of bourbon or thick mouthfeel, but the barrel is there and very tasty.

Almost no head on this, nose is a sweet, sweet maple. Palette follows the nose with a rush of warming maple sweetness and a touch of dark chocolate. Pretty thin body on this. Overall, it's really hard to call this a barrel aged brew, but it's just as drinkable as the original. Not bad.

12oz can, dated 8/17/15. Pours black with a medium sized light brown head which quickly recedes. Smells of medium roast coffee, chocolate, bacon, earthy hops. Tastes of coffee, roasted malt, bourbon, and earthy hops. Some prickly carbonation and medium body. Overall, pretty impressed by this American Stout; it's got a unique vibe, but is pretty mild in smell and taste.

The three things I think this beer needs to improve on is the nose, taste and mouthfeel. Not much going on in all three departments. Ive had buffalo sweat, vanilla bean buffalo sweat and now the bourbon buffalo sweat. I would say of those three vanilla is my favorite.
