BEER INFO

Tallgrass Brewing Company
Kansas, United States | website

Style: Milk / Sweet Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
We love this beer here at the brewery, and think you will have one of those “I’ve never-tasted-a-beer-like-that” kind of moments when you try it!

What we really like about this beer is the smoothness that brewing with cream sugar brings to the palate. This smoothness balances out the copious quantities of roasted barley used in the brewing process to create a rich, complex, and delicious beer. If you have not been a stout drinker in the past, give this beer a try. It might just change your mind about how dark beers should taste. It tastes so rich, but is surprisingly easy to drink!

16oz can on 7/27/16.

L: Dark black with a slight off-white head.

S: I can't lie. Smelled like someone spilled old coffee on a cardboard box. It smelled spoiled.

T: This is an odd stout. I might have gotten a bad can or something. It tastes like gasoline.

F: It has a creamy mouthfeel with a fair amount of carbonation despite the slight head.

Verdict- I don't want to ask where the sweat came off of this buffalo. This was not for me.

Near black. Dark brown pour with 1 finger head that fades airily quick. The aroma has some vanilla, coffee, dark malt. Almost a cherry cough syrup, not strong at all, just a hint. The taste has some bitter dark chocolate up front and throughout. More vanilla and steeped grain flavor. Mouthfeel. Feels great, silky smooth, and slippery. Overall, a real tasty little stout here. Lots of flavor. Very sweet. Kind of wanted some ice cream to eat while I drank this.

This isn't a coffee beer, but there's a lot of coffee going on here. Pours a dark coffee color, long-lasting tan head, very nice appearance. Aromas of dark roasted malt, with notes of coffee and chocolate. Flavors of coffee-flavored toffee, espresso bean, sweet cream. Creamy mouthfeel, lingering sweetness with notes of coffee and toffee on the aftertaste. Overall, very good if a bit sweet.

Dark reddish brown with a huge, foamy beige head that leaves a wisp or two of lace, but dies off to nothing fairly quickly.

On the nose are sweet cherries, roasted coffee, chocolate malt, coconut and tobacco. It's kind of promising at first but quickly becomes all sweet.

The sweet nose translates to a very sweet coconut-flavored cola, with metallic malt, and a hint of hard maple sugar.

Semi-dry, fizzy and thin. Just too oddly light and sweet for a stout, I guess that's the purpose of putting "cream" in the label, but this one's not for me.

L: Dark black with creamy tan head and no lacing.

S: Dark Roasted malt, hints of black olive, coffee and a hint of chocolate.

T: Dark Roasted malt with a nice balance of milk chocolate. Some coffee and black olive. Also a strong mineral note.

F: Creamy body and low carbonation.

Pint can poured into a shaker. Huge, frothy and tanned head. Stays solid. Spare lacing. Color of a beer is black and murky. Upfront some hops and chocolate aroma. Later a lot of coffee, chocolate. Some vanilla at the end. Medium dry flavor with a bitterness slowly dominating. Medium palate. Watery to oily. Long and dry finish. Could be thicker in a mouthfeel and with some more bitterness in a finish. Good and smooth beer.

"Drink by: 07/01/16" which I think is 1st of July, 2016.

Enjoyed from the tall boy can via a friend from work----Thanks Justin!
This nice oatmeal stout pours a nice deep dark cola brown with a moderate head of off white foam that settles to a thick ring, subtle thin pooling layer, and light lacing. Nose of mild milk chocolate, subtle vanilla, and light coffee. Flavors exceed the nose with cola touched milk chocolate with light vanilla and coffee showing up mid-taste. Back touches off with cola and subtle cream with nice roasted points with subtle char and a bitter sweet malt aftertaste. Nice and smooth mouth feel, lightly creamy, with light carbonation. Very nice and substantial. I would definitely have this one again. Nice.

Cheers

Appearance: Very dark brown with orange tints around the edge. It looks like, well, a stout. Light tan cap that quickly goes away.

Aroma: Dark malt with a touch of sweetness, I don't get much hops.

Taste: Full and rich, dark tones with little hop presence. For me it drinks more like a cola than a beer. Touch of sweetness, lingering richness in the aftertaste with no noticeable bitterness. It's as if the brewer was going for easy drinking and if so that goal was achieved.

Texture: Good texture with an almost airy feel. A bit light for a stout but it wasn't designed to be a powerhouse.

Overall: Our house Guinness fan (my son) likes it. Our house doppelbock fan (me) thinks it needs a bit more oomph.

A - A dark brown, black opaque body, a bit of translucence on the sides. Rocky tan head, some lacing on the way down. The head fades completely with time.

S - Mostly chocolate and dark breads, sweet with a hint of molasses.

T - Starts with bold roasted malt flavors, lots of dark wheat bread, chocolate and coffee.

M - Feel is way too light.

O - That is the real knock here; I want something with more chew, more presence. Otherwise, both a flavorful and drinkable stout.

This beer pours a very dark brown color and is opaque. The head looks like a taller version of what you would get from coca cola with much better retention, although it eventually fades to a very thin ring. Smell is kind of lacking. Light notes of chocolate, coffee, roasted malt with just a touch of sweetness. Taste is the same, but much stronger in flavor than the smell would lead you to believe. Feel is light and creamy with above average carbonation. Overall a very good beer. So easy to drink.

APPEARANCE: Very murky dark brown, no light coming through the thick part of the glass. Carbonation is hard to see. Pours a 2 finger of tan, foamy head that eventually settles down to a ring on top. Not much for lacing.
AROMA: Nice big chocolate, oatmeal, vanilla, and coffee.
TASTE: Tastes a lot like a cup of iced creamy coffee. Some chocolate and vanilla in the flavor, too. The oatmeal flavor comes through nicely, as well.
FEEL: Medium thin body, pretty dry all the way through, not all that creamy, but it is only 5% abv. Medium carbonation.
OVERALL: This is a drinkable and just maybe chuggable beer. Nice aroma, and decent flavors, it's 5% so don't expect chewy. Nice stuff.

i like this one a whole lot better than the bourbon one with cinnamon and vanilla. so much less sweet and gunky textured. its still really light as stouts go, as much a dark brown ale as a stout in appearance and feel, but i can taste the grain instead of the additives in it, and it has a lot going for it. the aroma and taste really showcase the oats, and the milk sugar is a nice addition to balance some of the more nutty and bitter elements of the darker grain. i like the caramel malt sweetness in the middle too, it gives it a kind of flow and continuity that works. for me though its still just a bit too sweet, and the mouthfeel lags as well. not much carbonation and lacking in body, especially for the style, and especially for featuring the oats so nicely until this point. it doesnt quite live up to the hype, but i have not had a whole lot of other real impressive stouts from this part of the country, so maybe its inflated by default of not having much competition in the style. i have much preferred the lighter styles from tallgrass though...

It's really smooth, creamy, and easy going. Chocolate, hops, cream, coffee, milk, vanilla, and malts. It's almost like a black and tan except with alot more flavor. For a low ABV stout it's actually really impressive.

Rich dark brown pour with a 1/5" brown head ring of a lighter shade around it. Big roast and chocolate nose to it. Well done, expected something understated, but nope, this hit the ground like it was a giant imperial.

Hits the spot between smooth and a dry finish. Cool interplay between a session strength beer that doesn't skimp on the malt or chocolate roasted notes. Oatmeal subdues any coffee malt note bitterness pretty well.

This is a good option for mild days out on the golf course.

This is a nice Oatmeal cream stout. It would pair well with a nice grilled steak or a grilled sausage. Nice beer to introduce a friend to style. Have a great day my friends.

On tap at Sigler's in Chattanooga.

Clear but opaque and nearly black body. Medium body and light carbonation. Plenty of dark roasted grain flavor and aroma. The flavor also features coffee and a touch of dark chocolate.

Looks like good root beer, with foam just as delicious. Sweet and rich, pretty silky. Full, round beer flavor keeps this from being anything like soda pop. A very "we got this flavor by brewing the beer right in the first place, not by just adding cheap flavorings to mediocre beer" sort of flavor. One of my favorites so far.

10/27...pours very dark brown, some light at the bottom, with tan foam that settles down. Milky, oaty, chocolate nose. Taste is smooth and creamy, coffee grit, closed with a lactose tasting cream. Sneaky carbonation but creamy mouthfeel. All in all, really good.

Not a real significant head for what I expected in a cream stout. Otherwise, pretty decent looking. Black with some tan forthy foam.

Smells like roasted malts, chocolate, and oatmeal with a hint of roasted coffee.

The coffee comes across more in the flavor, but it is mainly chocolate and oatmeal forward with a touch of charred malts to give it a slight ashy taste.

There has to be a decent amount of oatmeal flakes in here becasue the body is very impressive for the ABV.

I was really impressed with this beer. Tons of flavor for a 5% brew. I would gladly crush a few of these for breakfast routinely.

Poured into a beer mug. Pours dark brown with a one finger head that leaves a quarter inch of lacing and recedes slowly. Aroma of roasted grain, brown sugar, and a barely noticeable coffee. Taste follows the nose with roasted grains, grassy malt, and bitter coffee with a creamy finish. Full bodied and low carbonation. It's just a little sweet and has a lovely mouth feel and creaminess. It gets a little better as it warms up, but not noticeably.
First offering from Tallgrass and it's a good first impression. It's wonderfully bodied and not overly sweetened, especially for a milk stout.

From a 16 oz can (best by October 17, 2015) to a nonic glass. Reviewed from notes dated September 15, 2015.

A-This is a good looking stout. A normal pour produces a medium-height tan head that is dense and pillowy with good retention. The beer is nearly black and opaque.

S-The aroma is smooth and creamy with some nice roasted flavors and good bit of chocolate with just a little whiff of char or smoke.

T-The taste is close to the smell with nice chocolate notes, hints of cream, oats, a little bit of lactose on the back end, and a nice roasted malt blend. Not earth shattering, but above average.

M-The feel is medium to light for the style. This stout drinks easy.

O-This is a solid beer. It certainly looks the part, but I think the smell, taste and feel mostly deliver too. With its smooth feel, lighter body, and good looks, my notes say that this is almost like a more robust version of Guinness.

Nice dark/opaque color. Sweet and slightly smoky aroma. Smoky taste with a slightly bitter aftertaste. Not as complex as some competitors. Good, but not great.

I do really like their vanilla infused version, but that's a different beer :-)

16 oz enjoyed in a MadTree tulip/snifter September 13, 2015. It is dated December 24, 2015.

Look - Thin off white head. Dissipates quickly. Watery dark brown. No lacing.

Smell - Coffee and must. Light oat. Light dark fruit.

Taste - Coffee. Oats. Light fruit. Roast.

Feel - Watery. No substance.

Overall - Not terrible for the abv. Very watery.

Poured from a tallboy into a snifter, the beer is jet lack, with no head. Aromas of roasted coffee, milk chocolate, subtle cream sweetness, and subtle char. Flavors are heavily roasted coffee forward, with an instant balance of sweet cream, highlights of milk chocolate, and a roasted backbone. Hints of smoke help to layer, too. The body is smooth and robust, but dry and drinkable. There is a roasted bitter coffee and chocolate balance in the aftertaste, lingering on through the smooth, dry finish. Good beer.
