Style: Milk / Sweet Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
We love this beer here at the brewery, and think you will have one of those “I’ve never-tasted-a-beer-like-that” kind of moments when you try it!

What we really like about this beer is the smoothness that brewing with cream sugar brings to the palate. This smoothness balances out the copious quantities of roasted barley used in the brewing process to create a rich, complex, and delicious beer. If you have not been a stout drinker in the past, give this beer a try. It might just change your mind about how dark beers should taste. It tastes so rich, but is surprisingly easy to drink!

Poured into a beer mug. Pours dark brown with a one finger head that leaves a quarter inch of lacing and recedes slowly. Aroma of roasted grain, brown sugar, and a barely noticeable coffee. Taste follows the nose with roasted grains, grassy malt, and bitter coffee with a creamy finish. Full bodied and low carbonation. It's just a little sweet and has a lovely mouth feel and creaminess. It gets a little better as it warms up, but not noticeably.
First offering from Tallgrass and it's a good first impression. It's wonderfully bodied and not overly sweetened, especially for a milk stout.

From a 16 oz can (best by October 17, 2015) to a nonic glass. Reviewed from notes dated September 15, 2015.

A-This is a good looking stout. A normal pour produces a medium-height tan head that is dense and pillowy with good retention. The beer is nearly black and opaque.

S-The aroma is smooth and creamy with some nice roasted flavors and good bit of chocolate with just a little whiff of char or smoke.

T-The taste is close to the smell with nice chocolate notes, hints of cream, oats, a little bit of lactose on the back end, and a nice roasted malt blend. Not earth shattering, but above average.

M-The feel is medium to light for the style. This stout drinks easy.

O-This is a solid beer. It certainly looks the part, but I think the smell, taste and feel mostly deliver too. With its smooth feel, lighter body, and good looks, my notes say that this is almost like a more robust version of Guinness.

Nice dark/opaque color. Sweet and slightly smoky aroma. Smoky taste with a slightly bitter aftertaste. Not as complex as some competitors. Good, but not great.

I do really like their vanilla infused version, but that's a different beer :-)

Look - Thin off white head. Dissipates quickly. Watery dark brown. No lacing.

Smell - Coffee and must. Light oat. Light dark fruit.

Taste - Coffee. Oats. Light fruit. Roast.

Feel - Watery. No substance.

Overall - Not terrible for the abv. Very watery.

Poured from a tallboy into a snifter, the beer is jet lack, with no head. Aromas of roasted coffee, milk chocolate, subtle cream sweetness, and subtle char. Flavors are heavily roasted coffee forward, with an instant balance of sweet cream, highlights of milk chocolate, and a roasted backbone. Hints of smoke help to layer, too. The body is smooth and robust, but dry and drinkable. There is a roasted bitter coffee and chocolate balance in the aftertaste, lingering on through the smooth, dry finish. Good beer.

Poured from the can into a pint glass.
A - Pours dark brown with a 2 finger head that settles somewhat quickly.
S - Aroma is coffee-like.
T - Typical milk stout flavor, sweet with a little coffee, but with some added roastiness.
M - Creamy, like the label says.
O - This is a good milk stout. I look forward to getting my hands on some of the variations they do on this beer.

a da*n fine beer indeed! Pours a beautiful delicate and soft shade of night and Smells delightfully like espresso and prairie grass with a subtle abutting chocolate malty goodness gives way to the taste of milk-chocolate goodness :) .... where was I.... OH YES, a fine beer indeed! Over all?? NOT for alleged hop heads... For those who of truth DO indeed enjoy beer of all kinds.

*Can is four months past best-by date, so take this with a grain of salt.

Pours seal brown with a moderate cap of mocha foam that sputters away like cola. Pleasant aroma features tons of roasted malt with a touch of molasses and bittersweet chocolate.

The taste follows the nose, with plenty of roasted malt and oats to boot. Some caramel and milk chocolate emerge toward the back end. Warming reveals a coarser sweetness and even hints of alcohol. Medium-light body and zingy carbonation make for a slightly underpowered and over-carbonated mouthfeel, albeit customarily smooth for an oatmeal stout.

Overall, this is a straightforward and well-exectued oatmeal stout. It’s smooth, roasty, sweet, and drinkable. This is my second dark beer from Tallgrass, and both have been really solid.

Drink by 10/6/15.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy super dark khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Foamy streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa powder, toasted oat, and lactose aromas. Taste is much the same with toasted oat, cocoa powder, char, and lactose flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roast bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with a great mix of cocoa, oat, and lactose characteristics all around.

Serving type: can.

It's black, but not blackout dark. The head does not stick around very long. Not very powering on the nose, some sweetness, some dark roast. It's pretty watered down, but decent flavors.

A really fantastic stout. Great creamy texture, which is accentuated by the mildness of the oatmeal. A bit filling, and a great example of a dessert beer.

My first offering from Tallgrass. Typical stout look, smells of coffee and cocoa, nice mouth-feel - a bit thinner than most stouts, taste mirrors the smell pretty closely - coffee, malt, and cocoa beans. Pretty good beer from the middle of nowhere Kansas.

Pours rich black with a thin head. Roast malt and mild coffee aromas and flavors tempered by a light malt sweetness. Most of the balancing bitterness comes from the roast rather than from hops. Creamy, silky, soft carbonation, medium full body, medium low carbonation. A pretty good Oatmeal Stout.

Clear black colored beer with a medium sized brown colored head.

Smells strongly of chocolate and patent malt. Distinctly sweet smelling with a lesser coffee scent. Fainter green spice scent, mostly cardamom, smells faintly of Indian spice.

Starts out mildly sweet leaning towards bittersweet in taste. Moderate chocolate and more coffee than the smell. This is pretty easy to drink there are no big flavors to whack you in the mouth here. Roasted malts predominate with a faint rum taste to this. Mild bitterness levels.

Mouthfeel is good.

Overall it is the easy to drink factor that makes this one a winner. A beer for any time.

You're sitting there like, "I bet they used (specialty grain type) etc". Sparks the guessing game in your mind like so many Stouts do. That burnt / chocolate taste on the back palate and subtle body is what makes it.

From a pint can, this beer is utterly dark. It has a tan head, thick and creamy, and a moderately roasty/grainy scent. The taste, though, is solid...chocolate, coffee, and layers of sweetness, roasted grain, and malt. The feel is full and thick, and overall satisfying.

16 oz can poured into snifter best by date of 11/15

A: inky darkness head is a very slight off white that disappears about as quick as it was poured

S: lots of roasty malts smell get a little coffee and a little bit of a cooked oatmeal smell

T: Roasty sweet with a little touch of chocolate

M: very light and clean but with a bubbliness that gives it a full and creamy feel

O: Its a tasty beer especially for the low abv. I like huge boozy thick Stouts this is not that its lighter on flavor but with a little bit bigger mouth feel. The oatmeal is usually what contributes to that thick mouthfeel and this has that quite enjoyable

I was told this was like "drinking a brownie." That description is not entirely exaggerated. Very smooth and tasty stout. I wish I could get it in Michigan, but no luck. I had to pick this up in Minneapolis.

This is a very good stout, has traces of chocolate, and coffee. Main thing to note here that the coffee is more in the front than most, but does not come thru with the bitterness that most stouts have. I have to my daughter bring some of this back to Texas for me

Beautiful black stout with thick, creamy head. But head dissipated quickly. Wonderful roasty explosion of flavor that gives way to chocolatey, dry finish. Mouthfeel little thin for what I was anticipating, but overall a fabulous beer

Super underrated cream stout. This is without question the best milk stout to pair with fried food on the planet. Love stouts and sports? This beer is perfect to pair with your game day faves.
