Style: Tripel

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.50%

Availability: Spring

Notes / Commercial Description:
This beer is a Belgian Tripel that lives up to its name. Smooth and carefully crafted like a fine velvet painting, but with an 8.5% ABV this bird has some spurs! The beer pours a golden straw color with brilliant clarity. Topped with a lofty pure white head the beer has a wonderful floral nose, with subtle fruit notes. The taste is clean and crisp, with subtle fruit notes and a touch of candy like sweetness. The beer has a Champagne-like effervescent that provides a crisp offset to its sweet finish. While a pint glass is always nice, Velvet Rooster would also be at home in a tulip glass or Champagne flute.

Malts: 2Row, Munich, Wheat, Oats
Hops: Northern Brewer, Tettnang, Saaz
Adjuncts: Cane Sugar

Poured from can into Tulip, massive 3 finger cream colored head, good retention and lacing. Hazy golden in the glass. Smells of Belgian yeast fruity esters, citrus and almost candy like sweetness. I am looking forward to this sip, as Wooden Rooster is one of my favorite beers. Initial taste is malt sweetness, some fruitiness from the yeast, there is some citrus at play in the middle and the belgian candi shows up on the finish. The finish is quite unique, you get the sugar sweetness, but the there is enough spiciness and bitterness to tame it down. Mouthfeel is great on this beer, thick in the mouth, no alcohol detected. Another great beer from Tallgrass. Bring back wooden rooster!!!!!

Really nice aromas with great balance of fruit, spicy yeast, bready malt, and light and earthy hop notes. The yeast doesn't take away from the rest that the beer has to offer, like alot of Belgian ales do. Carbonation is perfect, not to heavy.

I picked up a can of Tallgrass'z Velvet Rooster for $1.69 at The Lager Mill. It's been a while since I've had a Tripel and I'm interested to see what Tallgrass can do with this style. Poured from a 12oz can into a tulip glass. 2017 Vintage.

A- The can looks nice, it's got a nice design that goes with the name and it's a little eye catching. It poured a hazy amber orange color that took on more of a burnt orange hue when held to the light and it had over three fingers worth of very fluffy off white head that died down to a thick ring that stayed till the end and it left some nice rings of patchy lacing behind. This is a very nice looking Tripel, it's just what I expect from the style.

S- The aroma starts off with a higher amount of sweetness with the belgian yeast being the first to show up and it imparts that typical mixture of bubblegum, bananas and cloves, it's pretty balanced with no single aspect seeming to stick out the most. After that comes a little more spices and it goes into the malts which impart a pale malt sweet malt, and slightly doughy aromas with the sweet malts seeming to stick out the most. This beer has a pretty nice aroma, it's pretty standard for the style.

T- The taste seems to be similar to the aroma and it starts off with a higher amount of sweetness with the yeast still being the first to show up and it imparts all the same aspects, but this time less bubble gum shows up, with more banana and green banana like flavors and a little less spices this time. Up next comes a slightly alcohol flavors and that goes into the malts which impart all the same aspects that they did in the aroma with the sweet malts still seeming to stick out the most. On the finish there's a lower amount of bitterness with some sweetness taking it's taste and it has a banana and sweet malt like aftertaste. This is a pretty nice tasting Tripel, most of the aspects seem to be true to style.

M- Fairly smooth, a little cloying, not too boozy, on the thicker side of being medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. The mouthfeel is nice, but I wish it wasn't slightly cloying.

Overall I thought this was a pretty nice beer and I thought it was a solid example of the style, it had pretty much all the aspects that I look for in the style and I thought that it was pretty much just as advertised. This beer had ok drinkability, I think one would be enough for me, anymore than that and the sweetness might start to wear on me. What I like the most about this beer is how true to style it is, there isn't any off flavors or aspects that don't belong with this style. What I like the least about this beer is the sweetness, I wish it wasn't as sweet as it is. I might buy this beer again when in the mood for a Tripel and I wouldn't turn one down. I would recommend trying this one if your a fan of the style. All in all I liked this beer, but I think it would be ever better if the sweetness was toned down just a little. It's a solid example of the style and it's not a favorite Tallgrass beer. Nice job guys, this is a solid Tripel, keep it up.

Nice lil' homegrown tripel. Color is an amber gold and head is a bubbly white, taking a little while to recede.

Smell is typical of all tripels with that Belgian yeast shining through. A little bit of pine and grass pushing one to take the first sip.

First sip also reminds me a lot of the Belgian tripels I've tried - the yeast, the wheat, the grass, and a little bit of hops are all there with the yeast ranking the forefront. For such a high ABV, just like all tripels, this one is superbly easy to session down and drink like it is nobody's business.

Taste is just like the smell, with a little bit of added warmth due to the higher ABV. Spotty lacing reveals itself as does a small, very thin white head. Decent carbonation, in fact quite high as the label suggests - but not champagne high thankfully.

I like this beer a lot and all its colorful counterparts. It's/they've been making a great pairing with my vegan foods and I always love that shit.. bahaha.

Thank you Tallgrass for killing another awesome beer and not to mention the artwork and name on yet another ale!

12 ounce can into chalice, best before 7/8/2017. Pours slightly hazy deep golden/amber color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy off white head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big peach, apricot, melon, lemon, pear, apple, pepper, light banana/clove, honey, candi sugar, wheat, biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, bready malt, and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big peach, apricot, melon, lemon, pear, apple, pepper, light banana/clove, honey, candi sugar, wheat, biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate herbal bitterness and yeast spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of peach, apricot, melon, lemon, pear, apple, pepper, banana, clove, honey, candi sugar, wheat, biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, bready malt, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitter/spiciness balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light dryness from bitter/spiciness, increasing through the glass. Medium-high carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth, moderately crisp, bready/grainy/creamy, and lightly sticky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 8.5%. Overall this is an excellent tripel! All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, bready malt, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth, crisp, clean, and pretty refreshing to drink. A touch on the malty side for the style; but still has impressive complexity and balance, with adequate carbonation and dryness. A really enjoyable offering.

Pours a hazy orange with lively bubbles of carbonation and a tight white bubbly head that leaves a trail of lace behind.

Smells of sour yeast, malty bread, banana, and nutmeg.

Hit of carbonation and spice up front rounding to a sweet malt middle, finishes dry with bitter spice, nutmeg and clove.

Velvet Rooster pours a bright cloudy golden color with a big lacing head. Weaker aroma, with sweet notes. Taste is spicy, with a nice banana finish and a hint of bitterness. Good body and feel. Overall, good Tripel

Good looking beer. Ok aroma and feel. It's a good beer but not my style. Tastes like a wheat or pilsner.

Big head dense pour. Golden honey with yeasty flecks. Head ebbs in quick fashion to a thin lace. Aroma of malt and sucrose. Spice candy drops. Fruit on par with sultanas, melon and pineapple. The more I nose I pick up canned fruit cocktail in a good way. Taste initially of malts and bitterness. Bitterness as like chewing on white grapefruit rind or in fact maybe a lemon. I can see where some may be put off with this but I like it. Not as sweet as the aroma where I believe the alcohol cuts into. Some spice. Light to medium body that evolves to creamy and mouth coating. Hop bitterness lingers. A complex craft both in smell and taste. Definitely worth picking up. Fits the tripel bill in good fashion. The Abv is perfect-feels good. I would not be put off by the lower ratings here. Would buy again.

This beer is a completely clear, straw-colored brew with a tall and firm head. The smell is of alcohol, Belgian yeast...spice, pepper, ripe fruit, and grain. The taste is bitter and slightly hot, with medium bitterness and an underlying sweetness. Malt and sugar both come through. The finish is lingering bitterness and warmth. Full in body.
